Farooq Abdullah warns of Supreme Court move if Jammu & Kashmir statehood not restored
SRINAGAR: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah blamed the "dual power structure" in the Union territory for the slow pace of development and warned that his party would move SC if statehood isn't restored soon.
It is the first time NC has openly threatened legal action on restoration of statehood for Jammu & Kashmir.
Abdullah said Saturday that people's expectations remain unmet due to the lack of full statehood despite formation of an elected govt in Oct 2024 - the first in J&K since 2018 and after region was carved into two UTs in 2019.
"People hoped the new govt would address their demands, but the absence of statehood is a major obstacle," he said after a meeting with party delegates at Kokernag in south Kashmir's Anantnag district.
"How can we fulfil aspirations without statehood? Only with it can we have a full-fledged cabinet capable of addressing public issues effectively," he added.
Abdullah said his party had launched an outreach campaign to make people aware of "certain political forces ready to compromise their interests". He added that after NC-led coalition's eight months in office, he remains hopeful about the return of statehood.

The "power struggle" between National Conference-led elected govt and lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha has grown increasingly public. This month, cabinet ministers accused Sinha of interfering in administrative decisions reserved for govt.
Sinha had pushed back. "I have no authority over development departments.
Governance is elected govt's responsibility. I only control police & can deploy them where needed. Roads, water, electricity, agriculture - all are under elected govt," he said.
Peoples Conference president Sajad Lone backed the demand for statehood but criticised NC's record in office. "UT status certainly limits development and is a humiliating existence. But whatever powers exist, NC govt has not utilised them. Instead, they've weaponised govt transfers and discriminated against constituencies they didn't win," Lone said.
He also questioned the concentration of power in CMO. "CM has 32 depts. Is it humanly possible to run 32 departments?" Lone asked.

Live Events New GST reforms: What gets cheaper and what does not According to government sources quoted by PTI, nearly 90% of items currently in the 28% slab will move to 18%. Almost all goods from the 12% category will shift to 5%. Everyday products such as household items and essentials are expected to fall under the lower 5% slab. The 40% rate will apply only to seven products, including tobacco and pan masala. Even so, the overall tax burden on tobacco will remain unchanged at 88%. Diamonds and precious stones, important for exports, will retain their current rates. Petroleum will continue to remain outside the GST net. GST was introduced on 1 July 2017, merging multiple state and central taxes into a single nationwide system. The current structure has four main slabs of 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%. Essential food items are exempt or charged at the lowest rate, while luxury and sin goods fall into the highest category. Revenue data shows that the 18% slab is the backbone of the system, accounting for about 65% of collections. The 28% rate contributes 11%, the 12% rate just 5%, and the 5% slab about 7%. A compensation cess is levied on demerit goods, which is due to expire in March 2026. The Council will need to decide how such goods are taxed once the cess ends. The finance ministry has said that the revamp is aimed at bringing 'long-term clarity on rates and policy direction'. Officials believe the two-slab system will reduce disputes over classification, address inverted duty structures, and give businesses more predictability. On the compliance side, reforms include technology-based registration, pre-filled returns, and faster refunds for exporters. These measures, the ministry said, will improve both ease of living and ease of doing business. The GST Council , chaired by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, is expected to take up the proposal in September. The plan has already been presented to the Group of Ministers on rate rationalisation, headed by Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary. The finance ministry underlined that consensus with states will be central to the rollout. 'In the upcoming weeks, it will work towards building a broad consensus with the states to implement the next wave of reforms,' it said. If approved, the new GST structure could be in place before Diwali, offering what the Prime Minister has called a 'double Diwali' for Indian consumers.

"Recently, some Political Parties and individuals are raising issues about errors in the Electoral Rolls, including those prepared in the past. The appropriate time to raise any issue with the Electoral Rolls would have been during the Claims and Objections period of that phase, which is precisely the objective behind sharing the Electoral Rolls with all Political Parties and the Candidates. EROS and BLOs undertake the responsibility for the correctness of Electoral Rolls. The polling body added that the draft Electoral Rolls, digital and physical copies, are shared with all political parties and put on the ECI website for anyone to see. Live Events "Following the publication of the draft ER, a full one-month period is available with the Electors and Political Parties for the filing of Claims and Objections before the final ER is published," the polling body said. The physical and digital copies of the final ER are also sent to political parties, EC said, adding that a two-tiered process of appeals is available wherein the first appeal maybe preferred with the District Magistrate (DM) and the second appeal with the CEO of every State/UT. Finally, the body said it continues to welcome the scrutiny of Electoral Rolls by Political Parties and any Elector. It will help SDMs/EROs to remove the errors and purify the Electoral Rolls which has always been the objective of ECI.
