Videos featuring emotional moments with hyper-realistic baby dolls have sparked both online fascination and political debate in Brazil, with lawmakers even bringing the life-like dolls into legislatures.
Influencers have staged situations such as birth simulations and strolls in shopping malls with the hand-crafted baby figures, known as 'reborn" dolls, creating videos that have gone viral.
In Rio de Janeiro, the city council has passed a bill honouring those who make the life-like dolls, pending Mayor Eduardo Paes' signature.
Meanwhile, legislators elsewhere across the country have debated fines for those seeking medical help for such dolls, following a video allegedly showing a woman taking one to a hospital.
Lawmakers have brought the dolls into legislative chambers.
On Tuesday, Joao Luiz, a state lawmaker from Amazonas, appeared with a doll at the State House to announce plans to ban reborn dolls from receiving care in the state's public health system.
However, local media reported that health authorities never recorded any such cases.
Last week, congresswoman Talíria Petrone criticised the attention her colleagues were giving to the issue.
'Can we focus on what really matters? If someone wants to have a doll, let them. I have two real children and they're more than enough work,' she said.
Dozens of 'reborn mothers' gathered at Villa Lobos Park in Sao Paulo on Saturday for a 10th annual meet-up. Participants said criticism should be aimed at attention-seeking influencers, not the broader community.
The hyper-realistic baby dolls are often used for grief therapy or parenting practice.
Berenice Maria, a nursing assistant and longtime collector who owns eight dolls, said they offer emotional comfort.
'I love reborns, despite the hate we see out there. I want the right to go out with them… go to the mall, go to the park,' she said.
Daniela Baccan, co-owner of a reborn doll shop in Campinas, Sao Paulo, said dolls sell from 700 reais (USD 124) to nearly 10,000 reais (nearly USD1,800).
With the rising controversy, safety concerns are increasing.
'We're locking up the store more, adding cameras. But at the same time, online demand has increased, and the store is seeing a much higher flow of people,' Baccan said.

Housefull 5 Worldwide Screen Count: Akshay Kumar starrer set to release on 7000 screens in 85 countries
The much-anticipated Housefull 5 is gearing up to hit theaters tomorrow, June 6, 2025, with a staggering 7,000 plus screens worldwide. It is Akshay Kumar 's widest release as a lead hero. The killer-comedy directed by Tarun Mansukhani and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, will roll out across 5,000 screens in India and 2,000 screens internationally. The film releases in 85+ countries internationally, at 1,300 different locations. While Akshay's widest release to date remains 2.0, where he played a pivotal supporting role alongside Rajinikanth, Housefull 5 marks a new milestone for the actor in a leading role. With exhibitors very much on board for this laugh riot and advance bookings picking up well on the final day, all eyes are on this fifth installment to deliver to the franchise standards of unadulterated fun and comedy. The makers of Housefull 5 have gone all out to ensure a grand release for their film. The decision to opt for such a massive screen count reflects their confidence in the film's appeal, magnified further by a star-studded ensemble that also features Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, Jacqueline Fernandez and Sonam Bajwa among others. The advance bookings of the comic caper in India began on a decent note and there is a noticeable uptick in ticket sales today. If this momentum continues, an opening day figure of Rs 20 crore net will be breached. Internationally, Housefull 5 is making waves, though the bookings haven't quite matched the initial buzz. Still, the film is poised for a good performance with advance bookings suggesting a gross of USD 3.5 million over its three-day opening weekend. Markets like the UAE, UK, and Australia, New Zealand and Fiji are expected to contribute significantly to this total. The stakes are high for Housefull 5. The comedy-ensemble genre, known for its high budgets due to the star-studded cast and the high production value, relies heavily on strong box office returns to justify the investments. The Housefull series hasn't had a theatrical miss so far. However, a misstep in the post-pandemic setting could make producers wary of backing similar projects. Industry insiders are watching closely, as the film's performance could change their decision on green-lighting certain films for the good or for the worse. Will Housefull 5 deliver the laughs and the box office collections? We shall know that soon. Have you booked your tickets for Housefull 5 yet? If yes, which version have you chosen to watch? A or B?

IU defamation case: Woman accused of slander faces additional 3 million KRW fine for repeated offence
In a recent court ruling, a woman in her 40s was held accountable for her actions against IU, which included posting defamatory comments about her. While presenting the verdict, the court took into consideration the woman's prior conviction for a similar offense against the singer in 2022. As a result, the offender was ordered to pay a hefty fine. The latest development in the case was reported by K-media outlet The Korea Herald on June 5. IU's second-time offender slapped with 3 million KRW fine The Seoul Central District Court found the defendant, referred to as Kim, guilty of the crime of slander and ordered her to pay a fine of 3 million KRW (2,200 USD). The charges against Kim stemmed from her alleged posting of s*xually offensive comments about IU, and accusing that IU's agency, Edam Entertainment, bribed judges to rule in favour of them in the previous case. Kim however, claimed that she did not mention any names in the concerned comments, and argued that they were too vague to be linked to IU and did not damage her reputation. However, the court ruled against her, taking into account her similar previous offence three years ago. The court offered IU's defamor leniency The Seoul Court issued a lenient sentence for Kim due to her being already indicted with similar charges and facing legal consequences for the same. Kim received the same fine for her current offense as she did for her previous offense against IU in 2022. As for IU's side, they revealed that the When Life Gives You Tangerines actress did not forgive her offender and thus, the court hearing proceeded as scheduled. Kim's previous offence against IU Kim's previous online attack against IU was in April 2022, and it involved posting derogatory comments about her singing and fashion sense. Despite Kim's claim that her comments were merely a reflection of her personal taste and that her language skills were limited due to a mental health issue, the court found her guilty and imposed a fine of 3 million KRW in December 2023. From then till date, Edam Entertainment has been vigorously taking legal action against individuals who post malicious comments about IU. By November, the agency had initiated criminal proceedings against 180 individuals.

Meghan Markle's Dad Thomas 'Struggles' Abroad as Daughter Fights Royals and Builds Empire, Know Where He's Staying
Meghan Markle's estranged father, Thomas Markle, is reportedly finding it difficult to adjust to his new life in the Philippines. The retired TV lighting director relocated to Cebu Island earlier this year, moving from his longtime home in Rosarito, Mexico, near the US border. His son, Thomas Markle Jr., also moved with him. The decision to move was part of Thomas Sr.'s effort to begin a new chapter in a more peaceful and affordable environment. He initially stayed at a 3-star hotel before settling into a USD 670-per-month high-rise apartment on the island. But the transition hasn't been easy. A source told The New York Post, 'Thomas and his son took the plunge and moved to Southeast Asia. It's been hard but they have each other.' Locals say the hot and humid climate in Cebu has taken a toll on Thomas Sr.'s health. With summer temperatures ranging from 80 to 100 degrees and humidity reaching 90%, the adjustment has been physically demanding. 'There are only two types of weather in Cebu: hot and humid, and hot and humid and raining,' a source told The Mirror. 'It's brutal even for men half his age, but it's still sad to see him looking as though he's struggling.' The Emmy award-winning lighting director has reportedly been using a cane to walk on Cebu's uneven streets. Why did Thomas Markle move to the Philippines? Before the move, Thomas Markle shared that he wanted to live in a calmer setting. In an interview with the Daily Mail in January, he said he was ready for a change, sharing that he had felt stuck in a rut and wanted to meet new people and experience kindness. He described Southeast Asia as a place full of culture and beauty. He also mentioned that he wasn't running away but was looking for a more positive life. Speaking about his daughter, he said he saw news about Meghan every day but held no ill will toward her. Thomas Markle has not spoken to Meghan Markle since before her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. Their strained relationship worsened after his stroke in 2022. He has never met his grandchildren, Archie or Lilibet, who turned 4 on June 4.
