The New York Mets officially retired David Wright's No. 5 this Saturday in a move that was long overdue.
Wright, a seven-time All-Star and two-time Gold Glove winner, spent all 14 MLB seasons with the Mets. He finished his career with a .296 batting average, 242 homers and 970 RBI. Not only was he a productive player, he was the team captain in the clubhouse.
Leading up to this Saturday's ceremony, Wright talked about meeting up with his former coaches and teammates in Queens.
"Just the support, whether it's my family, friends...the support walking around the city the last few days. Seeing No. 5 on the backs of so many people in New York is humbling," Wright said, via SNY. "Former teammates, got a chance to hang out with them the last couple of days. As us old players like to do, reminisce about the good ol' days. Just an amazing time. Just an amazing experience that's only going to get better.
"Thanks to the organization. Steve and Alex [Cohen]. They made this nothing but first class. They've gone over the top… and just welcomed me and my family with open arms, along with the rest of the alumni."
During this Saturday's ceremony at Citi Field, Wright's wife, Molly Beers, and their three children received a standing ovation.
It didn't take long for Mets fans to compliment Wright's wife, who wore a white dress for this special event.
"David Wright's wife is ridiculously gorgeous. Honestly, good for him. He deserves it," one fan wrote on X.
"Wow," a second fan commented. "David Wright's wife..."
"David Wright's wife Molly is so gorgeous," another fan said.
Wright's No. 5 is the 11th retired number at Citi Field, joining Daryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden, Willie Mays, Keith Hernandez, Jerry Koosman, Mike Piazza, Jackie Robinson, Tom Seaver, Gil Hodges and Casey Stengel.
Congratulations to Wright on this incredible honor.

Jonathan Kuminga declines two-year extension from Warriors: Report

Jonathan Kuminga reportedly declined another offer from the Golden State Warriors as he seeks a longer extension with the franchise. On Wednesday, ESPN reported that the Dubs have attempted to secure a deal with Kuminga, who turned down the offer due to the terms. According to Shams Charania and Anthony Slater, the Warriors are offering Kuminga a two-year deal worth $45 million. However, a team option for the second year of the contract, as well as the team's refusal to maintain a built-in no-trade clause, has become the point of contention for the 22-year-old rising star. Golden State signed Kuminga to a four-year rookie contract after drafting him with the seventh pick in 2021. He has since been a consistent role player for Steve Kerr's side and contributed to their 2022 title win. Kuminga's agent, Aaron Turner, met with the team during the Summer League in Las Vegas and presented some ideas for a deal, including a three-year, $82 million deal. If it materializes, the deal would keep Golden State below the second apron and allow them to use the taxpayer midlevel exception, per ESPN. Over the past month, Kuminga and Turner have explored the market for sign-and-trade options, which led to promising conversations with the Sacramento Kings and Phoenix Suns. The conversations reportedly led to proposals of four-year deals worth around $90 million, with a player option for the final season.

Braves place 5-time All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. on the injured list with Achilles tendon inflammation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Atlanta Braves put five-time All-Star Ronald Acuña Jr. on the 10-day injured list with right Achilles tendon inflammation Wednesday, though the exact severity of the injury to the slugging outfielder may not be known until additional testing is done. The Braves recalled outfielder Jarred Kelenic from Triple-A Gwinnett to take his place on the roster. Acuña first experienced discomfort in his calf area Monday night, when he scored from first on Austin Riley's double to help the Braves to a 10-7 victory over Kansas City. Acuña lobbied to play on Tuesday night and Braves manager Brian Snitker assented, only for Acuña to come up limping while trying to chase down a ball in right field in an eventual 9-6 loss. 'It happened when I scored from first to home on that play,' Acuña explained after the game, speaking through an interpreter. 'They are going to examine me (Wednesday) so we'll see how it goes.' Even after he came up limping, Acuña wanted to remain in the game. He headed out to his position in the field but saw Eli White trotting out to replace him. That Acuña was able to jog into the dugout at least generated some optimism that the injury to the Achilles tendon was not a complete tear and he could be back this season. 'I was kind of out there hoping they wouldn't hit it my way and of course any time you do that, they always hit it your way," Acuña said. 'I told them (about the pain Monday) and everyone said: 'Take the day if you want it. You can have the day off.' I've missed so much time already through injuries I didn't want to miss any more time.' Acuña, the National League MVP in 2023, has dealt with injuries for much of his career. He missed time as a rookie in 2018 with a sprained left knee ligament, then tore the ACL in his right knee to end his 2021 season. Last year, he pivoted awkwardly as he was taking his lead on the bases and wound up tearing the ACL in his left knee, ending his season after 49 games. Only twice in eight seasons has Acuña managed to play more than 119 games. After missing the start of this season, Acuña returned May 23 and began playing at an All-Star level again. He was hitting .306 with 14 homers and 26 RBIs in 55 games, including a 2-for-4 night with a homer against the Royals on Monday night. 'It's an injury, I'm worried,' Acuña said of the latest issue, which comes amid a season in which Atlanta has been devastated by injuries — particularly to its starting rotation. 'It's more pain, but it feels kind of — I feel it a lot when I try to put pressure on it.' Kelenic, the sixth overall pick of Seattle in the 2018 amateur player draft, has struggled to live up to his potential. He hit .231 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs in 131 games for Atlanta last season but was sent to Gwinnett in April of this season, after he hit .167 with two homers and just two RBIs over the first 23 games with the Braves. White is expected to be Acuña's primary replacement. He is hitting .255 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 72 games. ___ AP MLB:

Bears training camp observations: Rookie Luther Burden shines on Day 7

The Chicago Bears were back on the practice field at Halas Hall on Wednesday morning for the seventh practice of training camp. It was a lighter practice in shells following back-to-back padded workouts on Monday and Tuesday. There was a heavy focus on red zone, which included quarterback Caleb Williams rushing for a score but the starting offense did have their struggles after a strong start. Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III was the star of this lighter practice, and it's clear he has a bright future. As far as attendance goes, there were some veteran absences during this light workout in shorts. Right guard Jonah Jackson and left tackle Braxton Jones weren't spotted while left guard Joe Thuney was resting on the sideline. Offensive linemen Bill Murray and Ricky Stromberg, as well as defensive tackle Shemar Turner, cornerback Zah Frazier, cornerback Jeremiah Walker and cornerback Jaylon Johnson weren't present.
