Former EastEnders star slams soap over ‘ridiculous storylines' and reveals why she really left the show
A FORMER EastEnders star has slammed the soap's 'ridiculous storylines' and revealed why she really left the show.
EastEnders viewers know Nina Wadia for playing Zainab Masood in the BBC soap for six years.

Zainab arrived in 2007 before eventually leaving Walford behind in 2013.
Over a decade on, Nina has addressed the reasons behind her decision to leave.
During an appearance on Channel 5 's Vanessa, she explained to host Vanessa Feltz: "When the storylines get so ridiculous and so difficult, you kind of think 'I'm out'".
The actress continued: "The reason I left was because the storylines were getting ridiculous.
"That was one of the reasons I left. There were several, but that was one of the main reasons.
"My husband Masood was going to have yet another affair.
"And I was like, 'How can I react any differently [to the] way I reacted before when he told me he was having an affair?"
Nina revealed Zainab's initial brief had been "Pauline Fowler, but funny."
Having provided levity and comic relief for two years, she was confused to receive a domestic violence storyline.
The star continued: "You thought, 'How can I be funny with that storyline? I don't understand.'

"I think that's what happens when you have a change at the top, with the execs, they bring in their vision.
"Someone who hasn't really been paying attention to what your character's been doing - all of a sudden, you're asked to do something absolutely ridiculous."
Nina later added: "That's why I wanted to come out of it for a while.
"Hopefully, at some point, they invite me back, it'll be for something more interesting to do."
Vanessa pointed out Zainab hadn't been killed off - meaning Nina could potentially return to the soap one day.
The actress replied by saying: "They wouldn't kill her off.
"I did ask to be killed off because I thought, 'Yay, I'll get a big storyline if I get killed off'.
"But they were like, 'No, we want her back someday.' So, who knows?"
Among Zainab's most notable storylines was discovering oldest son Syed (Marc Elliot) was secretly gay.
EastEnders' 40th anniversary cameos so far
With the 40th anniversary of EastEnders coming up, fans are looking forward to some more incredible cameos from iconic faces of Walford's past. But who have we had so far?
Tracy-Ann Oberman - Oberman returned as Chrissie Watts, a character she last played nearly two decades ago.
Paul Bradley - Bradley returned as Nigel Bates, a character he last played over 25 years ago.
Micheal French - French returned as David Wicks, a character he last played two decades ago.
Patsy Palmer - Palmer returned as Bianca Jackson, a character she last played in 2019.
Ricky Groves - Groves returned as Garry Hobbs, a character who has not been seen since 2009.
Cliff Parisi - Parisi returned as Minty Peterson, a character who was last seen on the square in 2010.
Ross Kemp - Kemp has returned to play Grant Mitchell, a character he first played in 1990. The BBC has described Kemp's storyline as "explosive". Kemp said it was an "absolute honour" to return to the show.
Other aspects of the EastEnders 40th anniversary celebration include: A wedding between fan favorites, A huge explosion at the Queen Vic, and A live interactive episode.
Viewers also watched her relationship and family life with Masood Ahmed (Nitin Ganatra), their marriage breakdown, and her abusive relationship with Yusef Khan (Ace Bhatti).
Last year, Nina told The Sun about her hopes for Zainab to return for the soap's 40th annviersary.
She shared with us: 'I loved that show. I loved my time on it. I know they've got a big anniversary coming up, and I'm waiting for the call.'

EastEnders star Jamie Foreman says soap isn't 'anywhere near the highlight of my career' as he accuses show bosses of breaking promises
Jamie Foreman has revealed that EastEnders is 'nowhere near the highlight' of his acting career as he accused show bosses of failing to keep promises made before he joined the soap. The actor, 67, played Derek Branning from November 2011 until the character's death in the dramatic Christmas Day episode of 2012. Despite his role in one of Walford's most infamous families, Jamie said he doesn't consider the part a standout moment in his career - even though it gave him the opportunity to work alongside icons like Dame Barbara Windsor. Speaking on the Lewis Nicholls show, Jamie admitted: 'I'm going to be a little bit controversial here. 'I don't see EastEnders as anywhere near the highlight of my career. But for me… they'd asked me so many times before.' He went on to explain that producers promised him flexibility and favourable working conditions before he signed on. 'I went and met with them and they made me all manner of promises that they never kept, like "you'll never work a Saturday". I did every Saturday. I was the first in, last out every day.' The BBC declined to comment, and Jamie's representative has also been approached. During his short tenure on the show, Derek Branning made a significant impact. He had an affair with Kat Slater, tormented Pat Butcher on her deathbed, and revealed the truth about Dennis Rickman to his son, Denny Watts. This isn't the first time Jamie has voiced criticism of his time on EastEnders. In a 2013 appearance on Daybreak, he said: 'I hated the scenes in the Queen Vic, I'm terribly sorry to everybody! 'I'm sure a lot of the cast will say the same thing - they're so long and laborious. 'You've got to stand there and wait for somebody over there to stop talking, so you're listening to that conversation, then it cuts to somebody else. You never shoot a scene quickly in there.' In 2020, Jamie revealed he suffered a heart attack, just like his character did in the BBC soap. Speaking to The Sun about his health scare, Jamie said: 'I had a massive heart attack a couple of years back and nearly pegged it. 'That put everything in perspective. All the years and energy I'd spent stressing about work and now I think "I've been there, done that".' Jamie has had an illustrious film and TV career, starring in movies such as Layer Cake, Oliver Twist and Nil By Mouth. Despite his successful career, he has been candid about the challenges he's faced in finding work. He told the Business & Money supplement in The Sunday Times: 'I've been sort of struggling on the work front. 'I wasn't terribly well a few years ago and it made me really reappraise things, so I'm in a transitional period. I'm only working if something nice comes in. 'My wife and I set up a little fashion business, Jules Boutique, in Surrey a while ago, which is her shop really and it's still burgeoning.' Jamie was previously married to EastEnders actress Carol Harrison, who played Louise Raymond. They share a son, Alfie.

Celebs have charity kickabout in Southampton for Alzheimer's UK
Hundreds of people gathered to watch a celebrity football match that raised money for dementia prevention, treatment and TV star Calum Best and This City Is Ours actor James Nelson-Joyce were among those who played at Southampton's St Mary's stadium on team captained by actor and presenter Joe Swash won the match 9 - 5 in front of about 700 proceeds from the event have gone towards the charity Alzheimer's UK. Charlie Quirke took part in the charity game and said: "It's an absolute privilege to be involved in such an important cause." The actor, best known for playing Travis Stubbs in the ITV sitcom Birds of a Feather, and son of actress Pauline Quirke, added: "Alzheimer's affects so many families across the country, and when you have the opportunity to use your platform to make a real difference, you simply have to take it.
