
Post Office systems go down across Britain

A major outage earlier hit customers at Post Office branches across Britain. People over the UK attempting to send out parcels this afternoon ran into trouble as systems crashed while they were in store. Outage reports for the Post Office shot up shortly before 3pm, according to DownDetector's tracker.
Most of the problems were about a 'total blackout,' while others indicated there was a problem with the internet connection. It is not yet known what caused the outage, but the Post Office told Metro that it is 'not cyber related'.
Post Office posted on X to warn people of the crash when it happened: 'We're aware of an outage impacting our branches. The issue is being worked on and things should be back to normal later this afternoon. Thanks for your patience.' The company said their systems were back up and running just before 4pm.
Shortly after, a Post Office spokesperson said: 'There was a major outage across the Post Office estate this afternoon. 'We are pleased to announce that service has now been restored to branches. 'We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers and the operators of our branches.'
But some customers were left furious with the outage and took to social media to share their disappointment. One woman said: 'Bro I walked 25mins to the post office in flip flops for them to tell me the system is down & come back tomorrow, bro can u just HAND IT TO ME.'
Another added: 'No they are not back to normal! On the strength of your post I travelled again into Macclesfield only to find the post office at WH Smith still offline - system down. So - no- your services are not back to normal - unless you consider zero service normal?' A third wrote: 'The post office servers are down all over the UK. look at their twitter. I am unable to drop off parcels as they are CLOSED as unable to function.'
One more chimed in: 'Hello, please can I arrange for my parcel that is stuck inside the post office to be delivered to my home? Been twice to collect it now and told both times 'system down' unhelpful employees and rude as always.' It comes after a spate of high-profile cyber incidents affecting the M&S and Co-op. M&S online orders were back in action six weeks after the cyber attack in April, which cost the company £300 million. Co-op admitted yesterday that all 6.5million people on its membership scheme had details stolen in the hack, which left some branch shelves empty.

World War Two veteran Henry Francis celebrates 100th birthday
A decorated World War Two veteran who carried out covert missions behind enemy lines has celebrated his 100th Charles Francis, known affectionately as 'H', served in both the Royal Navy and Royal Marines after joining up aged his birthday party, Mr Francis was presented with a personal letter from the First Sea Lord, General Sir Gwyn Jenkins, acknowledging his extraordinary daughter, Teresa Betton, said: "What he gave for this country, all the friends that he lost… I'm so proud of him. Mr Francis' family said the day was deeply emotional as they recalled stories of his daring tale involved being dropped into the wrong location in what was then Yugoslavia and spending five days finding his way out before being greeted by General Josip Broz Tito, who later became president of the country. Mr Francis, who lives in South Gloucestershire, was awarded the Yugoslavian military medal, which is one of many honours he earned over the years. In his letter, Gen Jenkins paid tribute to the "truly courageous" covert operations carried out by Mr also referenced an incident in Burma when Mr Francis was injured by a bayonet before returning to the UK for a time to recover. Gen Jenkins said: "You are an incredible individual with an abundance of character, and you and all your generation are an inspiration to today's sailors and Royal Marines. "I am delighted to be able to send you the Royal Navy's best wishes for your 100th birthday."Asked for the secret to a long life, Mr Francis replied: "Before you argue with a man, make sure you can handle him."

Tributes after world's longest-serving KFC worker dies in UK town
The world's longest-serving KFC employee has died after working for the company for nearly 50 years. Tributes have been paid to Pauline Richards, known by many as Miss KFC, who first started working in the fried chicken chain's outlet in Taunton, Somerset, in 1978. She began her career as a cleaner but went on to take on almost every role in the store, including team leader and manager. Taunton Town Council described Mrs Richards as one of the town's 'most loved residents' and said she would be missed. 'All of us at Taunton Town Council are saddened to learn of the passing of one of Taunton's most loved residents, Pauline Richards, aka Miss KFC, the world's longest-serving member of KFC staff and a friendly, well-known face in our town,' the council said. 'She was an excited and incredibly deserving recipient of one of our civic awards back in March this year. 'Our thoughts are with her family and all of those who knew and loved her.' A KFC spokeswoman added: 'We're deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Pauline Richards. 'We are supporting Pauline's family, who have asked for their privacy to be respected during this difficult time.'

The UK coastal town up in arms over sea rafts removal
