Pro Football Focus previews Texas A&M's 2025 football season

USA Today2 days ago
Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko will enter his second season at the helm with higher expectations than his inaugural campaign, largely due to the return of talent and 14 transfer portal additions that have added much-needed depth to a roster that needed to change for the better and transform previous weaknesses into predominant strengths.
The return of redshirt sophomore quarterback Marcel Reed resulted in wide receivers KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State), two of the top transfer receivers, choosing the Aggies based on Reed's skill set and their overall fit in OC Collin Klein's offense. In the backfield, senior running back Le'Veon Moss and former five-star Rueben Owens are the headliners, while Amari Daniels and EJ Smith provide elite depth.
However, the 2025 Aggie offense will only work as long as the offensive line lives up to its high offseason expectations, which includes all five 2024 starters, led by senior guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, whose high confidence in the O-line and the offense as a whole was seen during his appearance at SEC Media Days last week.
"The goals we have aren't lofty. We were one play away from being in the SEC Championship game… We're coming."
Adams' statement isn't just based on confidence, but the reality that surrounds A&M's roster, which is all too experienced and talented not to win at least nine or ten games this season, despite what rival fanbases or some in the national media have stated. Still, credit to Pro Football Focus for, yes, focusing on the core reasons Texas A&M will either make the College Football Playoff or, once again, win only seven or eight games.
On offense, PFF believes that the running game, led by Le'Veon Moss and Marcel Reed, during designed runs, is Texas A&M's primary strength, mainly due to the backfield's speed and vision, combined with the veteran offensive line, which will also open up the passing game with new and returning weapons.
"Texas A&M's ground game should be one of the best in the country this season. The Aggies boast the No. 5 running back unit and No. 3 offensive line, along with one of the top rushing quarterbacks in the nation in Marcel Reed. Adding to that firepower are wide receivers Kevin Concepcion and Terry Bussey, both of whom have shown big-play ability out of the backfield."
Defensively, the loss of defensive linemen Shemar Stewart, Shemar Turner, and Nic Scourton to the NFL created an opening for senior edge Cashius Howell and junior Rylan Kennedy to earn starting spots on the outside, while four defensive line additions from the transfer portal, including former Iowa State DL Tyler Odyedim, who is nearly guaranteed to make an immediate impact inside between junior DJ Hicks and senior Albert Regis.
However, the defense isn't highlighted within the preview, instead noting that Texas A&M's main weakness is Marcel Reed's potential lack of improvement in the passing game, which could put the Aggies at a disadvantage if he doesn't exhibit strides early and throughout the 2025 season.
"For Texas A&M's offense to avoid becoming one-dimensional in 2025, Marcel Reed must develop as a passer. His 64.6 passing grade last season ranked just 114th nationally, and his 29.4 grade under pressure was the fourth-lowest in the Power Four. With a top-tier offensive line and a deep group of playmakers around him, the pieces are in place — now Reed simply needs to elevate his game."
While these are simply numbers, Reed's "freshman moments" came under pressure, leading to most of his six interceptions. Therefore, I agree that with all the strengths around him, improving in the pocket is mandatory for the Aggies to win tough games at home, especially on the road.
PFF named Marcel Reed and Ar'maj Reed-Adams as the offensive players of focus, noting Reed's speed and 22 "explosive" runs last season, paired with Adams' elite running blocking and overall power as both players' strengths. On defense, junior linebacker Taurean York, who finished with 59 run stops last season, is either tied, or right behind Texas LB Anthony Hill Jr., who, as we all remember, was once committed to Texas A&M.
The biggest takeaway from this preview is that we are in complete agreement that Marcel Reed's internal clock, which PFF measured at an average of 3.1 seconds before his release last season, needs to speed up, which shouldn't be difficult while working with a wide receiver room built on speed and quickness and better separation in coverage.
Texas A&M is a College Football Playoff contender on paper, only if Marcel Reed takes that proverbial "next step," while the pass rush and secondary show consistency with Mike Elko now calling plays.

Top college football commentator predicts LSU football to win the national title

NEW: College Football Playoff Prediction via @jdpickell🏆Do you agree? 🤔 On3 commentator J.D. PicKell picked LSU football to win the 2025 national championship in a College Football Playoff bracket he released on Tuesday. Pickell has the Tigers, seeded No. 1, defeating No. 2 Ohio State in the championship game. They are one of five SEC teams included in the bracket alongside Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and Texas A&M. In the 12-team setup, LSU earns a first-round bye, then faces No. 9 Alabama in the quarterfinals and No. 5 Oregon in the semifinals. The Crimson Tide face the No. 8 Bulldogs in the opening round. Pickell has No. 4 Texas being upset by No. 5 Oregon in the quarterfinals. The format for the College Football Playoffs following the 2025 regular season will be a straight-seeding model, giving the top-four teams in the final playoff rankings first-round byes. Pickell's prediction continues to generate hype for LSU ahead of the 2025 season. The Tigers returned quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, along with signing the top-ranked transfer class in the country. LSU head coach thinks he finally has the roster to break through and make the playoff with LSU, though Kelly isn't a stranger after leading Notre Dame to multiple playoff appearances. Pickell's breakdown includes five SEC teams, three from the Big Ten, one from the ACC, one from the Sun Belt, and one independent.

Checking in with the Oregon Ducks safety room ahead of the 2025 season

We are less than 50 days away from the start of the 2025 college football season, and fewer than two weeks stand between us and the beginning of the Oregon Ducks' fall camp getting off the ground in Eugene. While coaches and players wrap up their final couple of offseason weeks, we're ready to jump back into things and take a deep dive into what's set to take place at Autzen Stadium this year. The Ducks are coming off of an incredible season that saw a 12-0 regular season, a Big Ten Championship, and the No. 1 seed in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The offseason brought significant roster turnover as Oregon sent a program record 10 players into the 2025 NFL draft; however, those players have been replaced by a young yet incredibly talented group of players ready to uphold the standard in Eugene. Will they be able to complete the job? Expectations are high, but it won't be an easy task. Over the next few weeks, many questions will be asked, and a significant number of them will be answered. Once we get a look at things during fall camp, we will be able to predict more accurately how things shape up. However, we already have our depth chart projections for offense and defense from spring. As we continue our preview of the 2025 season, leading up to the kick-off vs. Montana State on August 30, let's take a deep dive, position by position. Previous Position Previews Now let's take a closer look at the cornerbacks as we prepare for fall camp. Overall Oregon Ducks Safety Check-In As is the case with a majority of positions on the roster, the Oregon Ducks have a lot of production to replace at the safety spot. With both Kobe Savage and Tysheem Johnson graduating, the Ducks will have a pair of new starter in 2025. Fortunately, they landed one of the best transfer portal players in the nation with Purdue's Dillon Thieneman, a player who is considered to be one of the top safeties in the nation, and a likely first-round pick in next year's NFL draft. Alongside Thieneman are several young, former blue-chip players who will look to step into a bigger role this year and ascend in the depth chart. Overall, the safety room might be among the strongest on the roster this season. Departing Oregon Ducks Safeties Career Stats: 54 games, 262 tackles, 16 TFLs, 2 sacks, 6 INTs Analysis: After transferring from Ole Miss and playing two seasons with the Ducks, Tysheem Johnson's time in college is up. Johnson made positive impacts for both the 2023 and 2024 Oregon teams, playing more snaps than almost any defensive player, but he did always have more success stopping the run than as a ball-hawking safety. Career Stats: 36 games, 179 tackles, 10 TFLS, 6 INTs, 1 FF, 1 FR Analysis: Kobe Savage played just one season for the Ducks, coming to Eugene as a grad transfer from Kansas State, and although he wasn't a superstar on the Ducks defense, he was a consistent contributor all season long. It's tough to lose both of your top safeties in one year, and the Ducks will fill these holes in different ways. Career Stats: 17 games, 7 tackles Analysis: The last departing Ducks safety is Tyler Turner, who entered the transfer portal this winter and committed to Baylor. Turner played two seasons at Oregon, redshirting in his first, leaving him three years of eligibility to transfer to Baylor. Returning Oregon Ducks Safeties Career Stats: 14 games, 9 tackles Analysis: Although he technically transferred to Oregon from Alabama last spring, Peyton Woodyard's career hadn't started yet, giving him four years (now three) in Eugene. Woodyard is one of Oregon's fastest developing young players, and with the newly open spots atop the secondary, expect Woodyard to become a major contributor this fall. Career Stats: 2 games, 1 tackle Analysis: Although Woodyard is probably a step ahead of him, Aaron Flowers is another one of Oregon's fastest rising young stars. After showing out in the Ducks' 2024 Spring Game, many expected Flowers to play a bigger role as a freshman last season, but he ended up redshirting. He may not be the starter, but I expect we'll see much more of Flowers this season. Career Stats: 6 games, 1 tackle Analysis: Oregon's final safety returner is Kingston Lopa, who, like Woodyard and Flowers, was a 4-star freshman in 2024. Lopa played more than Flowers, seeing action in six games, but he never saw a high snap count. The Ducks called on him in the Big Ten Championship game to cover Penn State's Tyler Warren, one of the best tight ends in the nation. That confidence will surely be transferred into this coming season. Incoming Oregon Ducks Safeties Career Stats: 24 games, 210 tackles, 7 TFLs, 1 sack, 6 INTs, 2 FFs Analysis: Dillon Thieneman was among Oregon's most important pickups in the portal after the way the Ducks lost to Jeremiah Smith and Ohio State, giving up deep ball after deep ball. Thieneman's ability against the run and especially the pass is unmatched, and he will be a legitimate star on this Oregon defense. 247Sports Recruiting Profile: 4-star recruit, No. 4 safety, No. 73 overall Analysis: Speaking of legitimate stars, Oregon's sole safety recruit Trey McNutt has stardom in his future. Although 247Sports doesn't rank him as a 5-star, On3Sports does, and they have him as the No. 2 safety in his class. McNutt won't start this fall, but it may not take long for him to become one of Oregon's top safeties or one of the Big Ten's top safeties. Predicting Oregon Ducks Starting Safeties Boundary Safety: Dillon Thieneman Field Safety: Kingston Lopa Oregon Ducks Safety Outlook The safety position seems to be in great hands both now and in the future for the Ducks. With Thieneman leading the way this year, Oregon has a bright future ahead, led by a core of Lopa, Woodyard, Flowers, and McNutt. On top of that, the Ducks have a commitment from 5-star safety Jett Washington, the top-ranked safety in the 2026 class. Much like the cornerback spot, this could be one of the strong points for Oregon's roster going into the future. There's been a lot of talk surrounding Wisconsin's brutal 2025 football schedule. Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt is the latest to join that discussion. On the latest episode of his podcast, The Joel Klatt Show, while discussing teams he's selling entering 2025, Klatt made a bold claim about Wisconsin's season. "You look at that schedule, and I don't know if they win three games," Klatt said. Wisconsin was on the analyst's 'sell' list primarily due to the difficulty of its schedule. Klatt emphasized that it's very possible that the Badgers fall below 2024's mark of five wins despite being more talented and better equipped for success on both sides of the football. "I actually think that Wisconsin could be a better team, roster-wise, this year than they were last year," Klatt said. "But here's the problem. I don't know if that shows up in the win-loss column this year. This is one of the most difficult schedules in the still have to be better than the teams that they play. They could be underdogs in nine of their 12 games this year. Think about that." Klatt's prediction of Wisconsin being a team to sell is a fair analysis. However, winning only three games seems like a rather easy goal for this team. The Badgers begin the season by playing both Miami (OH) and Middle Tennessee in the non-conference slate. While they visit Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the following week, the program begins Big Ten play with a home game against Maryland. Wisconsin should have three wins through that initial stretch of four games. After that, however, there are indeed no free games left on the Badgers' schedule. The majority of their remaining games come against teams that will be ranked in the AP Poll, including some set for College Football Playoff contention. Bookmark Klatt's prediction. Only time will tell where Wisconsin finishes once the games kick off in four weeks.
