
Blue Ghost lander captured a solar eclipse while on the moon. See the stunning imagery here
The Blue Ghost lunar lander, which has been on the moon since the spacecraft's successful touchdown on March 2, captured images of the sun, Earth and moon lined up at around 4:30 a.m. ET, the private Texas-based company Firefly Aerospace announced Friday.
The lander captured what is known as the 'diamond ring' effect, which is when light from the sun peeks through right before totality — in this case when the Earth fully blocked the sun — and after.
Firefly Aerospace also shared footage made up of several images stitched together that the lander had rapidly captured during the solar eclipse. These images show the spacecraft taking on a deep red hue as the sunlight is refracted through the Earth's atmosphere, resulting in a shadow cast on the lunar surface.
'Firefly's Blue Ghost lunar lander had the rare opportunity to operate on the Moon and capture the first (high-definition) imagery of a total solar eclipse on March 14,' Will Coogan, Blue Ghost's chief engineer, said in a email. 'This is the first time in history a commercial company has ever been operational during an eclipse on the Moon, and we're incredibly proud of the imagery we've downlinked so far.'
The images came in after the lander's X-band antenna — the device used to beam data and images back from the vehicle — warmed up after facing cold temperatures during the darkness caused by totality, Firefly Aerospace posted on X.
'Operating for nearly 5 hours of darkness during a total eclipse is as challenging as operating during the lunar night — temperatures on the Moon can quickly drop below -100°C (minus 148 degrees Fahrenheit) and there's no sunlight to provide power, so the lander was solely running on battery power,' Coogan said in an email. 'But this team continues to raise the bar and make achievements that are incredibly difficult look easy.'
A spacecraft has captured an eclipse while on the moon's surface only one other time. In 1967, NASA's Surveyor 3 lander, which had been sent to gather data in preparation for the Apollo missions, captured a series of images that documented the first view of an eclipse from another celestial body.

The Blue Ghost lander has been documenting its journey through space since it left Earth on January 15, sharing breathtaking imagery of the moon and Earth. Next up, Firefly looks to capture the lunar sunset on Sunday.
During lunar sunsets, a mysterious phenomenon occurs when the moon's horizon glows, which is believed to be caused by sunlight scattering through floating electrostatic particles, according to NASA.
Firefly CEO Jason Kim has told CNN that he is looking forward to verifying this event.
'There's a phenomenon called the lunar horizon glow that only the Apollo 15 and 17 astronauts have seen with their eyes,' Kim said. 'We're going to be able to capture that in 4K-by-4K high-definition video and share that with the rest of the world.'
Besides sharing the imagery, Blue Ghost has 10 NASA science and technology instruments aboard as part of the space agency's Commercial Lunar Payload Services, or CLPS, initiative.
CLPS is part of NASA's broader Artemis program, which aims to land astronauts on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years. The instruments are currently working to collect data primarily on the moon's subsurface, such as lunar dust and regolith, the loose rocks and mineral fragments that cover the lunar surface.
Shortly after the sunset, the lander will continue to operate for several hours during the lunar nighttime before the period of darkness and cold temperatures are expected to cause the spacecraft to cease operations.

Our Closest Sun-Like Star May Host a World Where Life Could Thrive
There may be a habitable world at the Sun's closest solar twin. In the complex space inhabited by the Alpha Centauri triple star system, JWST has just discerned the presence of a giant exoplanet orbiting Alpha Centauri A, the most Sun-like of the three stars. Moreover, that exoplanet is in the star's habitable zone – the perfect distance from the star for liquid water to pool. But wait – there's more. Evidence of the prospective world, which is tentatively known as Alpha Centauri Ab, was discovered using direct imaging in what could be a significant breakthrough for exoplanet science. Related: "If confirmed, the potential planet seen in the Webb image of Alpha Centauri A would mark a new milestone for exoplanet imaging efforts," says astrophysicist Aniket Sanghi of the California Institute of Technology. "Of all the directly imaged planets, this would be the closest to its star seen so far. It's also the most similar in temperature and age to the giant planets in our Solar System, and nearest to our home, Earth." The Alpha Centauri system is located just 4 light-years away, a triple system made up of the binary pair Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, orbited at a greater distance by the red dwarf star Proxima Centauri. Other exoplanets are already known in the system. Three have been found orbiting Proxima Centauri, including one within the star's habitable zone. But the conditions around red dwarf stars – which tend towards the tempestuous – may be less hospitable than those around stars like the Sun. The detection of worlds in the central binary has been more difficult to accomplish. "With this system being so close to us, any exoplanets found would offer our best opportunity to collect data on planetary systems other than our own," says astronomer Charles Beichman, director of the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute at Caltech. "Yet, these are incredibly challenging observations to make, even with the world's most powerful space telescope, because these stars are so bright, close, and move across the sky quickly." To date, Alpha Centauri B remains without a known world. However, glimmers of something have been spotted in orbit around Alpha Centauri A, the brightest of the three stars and belonging to the same G-type class as the Sun. In 2021, a team of astronomers led by Kevin Wagner of the University of Arizona announced a tentative detection of an exoplanet in the habitable zone of Alpha Centauri A, identified using direct imaging. Most exoplanets are found using indirect methods, such as looking for regular dips in starlight, blocked by the orbiting exoplanet, or changes in starlight associated with the gravitational effect of the exoplanet's presence. Sanghi, Beichman, and their colleagues used JWST to look for further evidence of this world, taking their first observations in August 2024, using a coronagraph to mask the light from Alpha Centauri A. After subtracting the light from Alpha Centauri B, their results showed a faint point source, at around twice the distance from Alpha Centauri as Earth is from the Sun. But follow-up observations conducted in February and April of 2025 revealed no such object. "We are faced with the case of a disappearing planet!" Sanghi explains. "To investigate this mystery, we used computer models to simulate millions of potential orbits, incorporating the knowledge gained when we saw the planet, as well as when we did not." These simulations also included the sighting of Wagner and his team. In about half the simulations, the exoplanet was too close to the star to be detected, its presence drowned out by all the bright light – supporting the case for Alpha Centauri Ab. This world, the researchers determined, would have a radius of around 1 to 1.1 Jupiters, a mass between 90 and 150 Earths, comparable to Saturn's 95-Earth mass, and orbit at about twice the Earth-Sun distance, squarely in the habitable zone. This set of properties describes a world that would have to be a gas giant, which places its potential habitability into question. However, gas giants in the Solar System are lousy with moons that could have habitable conditions – so the nature of the exoplanet doesn't rule out life around Alpha Centauri A. However, more work needs to be done to confirm the existence of Alpha Centauri Ab, and figure out how the heck it even formed in the complex gravitational environment of the Alpha Centauri system. "Its very existence in a system of two closely separated stars would challenge our understanding of how planets form, survive, and evolve in chaotic environments," Sanghi says. X-ray telescope finds something unexpected with the 'heartbeat black hole'

A black hole's bizarre "heartbeat" is forcing astronomers to reconsider how these cosmic heavyweights behave. Observations of IGR J17091-3624 — a black hole in a binary system roughly 28,000 light-years from Earth — were taken using NASA's Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE). Nicknamed the "heartbeat" black hole for its dramatic, rhythmic pulses in brightness, the object feeds on matter stolen from a companion star. The black hole's pulses are the result of fluctuations in the superheated plasma swirling around it (also known as the accretion disk) and the inner region called the corona, which can reach extreme temperatures and radiate incredibly luminous X-rays. IXPE measured the polarization — the direction of the black hole's X-rays — to determine the alignment of its vibrations. The space probe recorded a surprising 9.1% polarization degree, which is much higher than theoretical models predicted, according to a statement from NASA. Studying the polarization degree offers insight about the geometry of the black hole and motion of matter nearby. Typically, such high readings suggest the corona is viewed almost edge-on, where its structure appears highly ordered. However, other observations of IGR J17091-3624 don't seem to match that picture, leaving scientists with a puzzling contradiction. Astronomers tested two different models to help explain the recent observations of IGR J17091-3624. One posits that powerful winds are being launched from the accretion disk, scattering X-rays into a more polarized state even without an edge-on perspective. The other suggests the corona itself is moving outward at extraordinary speeds, causing relativistic effects that amplify polarization. Simulations of both scenarios reproduce the IXPE results, but each model challenges long-held assumptions about black hole environments. "These winds are one of the most critical missing pieces to understand the growth of all types of black holes," Maxime Parra, co-author of the study from Ehime University in Matsuyama, Japan, said in the statement. "Astronomers could expect future observations to yield even more surprising polarization degree measurements." Their findings were published May 27 in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Solve the daily Crossword
