Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine linked to eye problems that could damage vision in new study

Daily Record2 days ago
Researchers looked at how the vaccine affected patients' corneas - the clear front part of the eye that allows light to come in
Scientists have found that Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine may increase the risk of serious eye damage, potentially leading to loss of sight, according to a recent study.

The new research conducted by Turkish scientists specifically examined how the jab affected patients' corneas - the transparent front part of the eye that lets light in. In 64 subjects, changes in the inner layer of the cornea, known as the endothelium, were measured before receiving the first Pfizer dose and two months after the second.

The results indicated that having two doses of the vaccine led to thicker corneas, fewer endothelial cells in the eye, and more variation in the size of these specialised cells that form the endothelium.

In the short term, these alterations suggest the Pfizer vaccine might temporarily weaken the endothelium, even though patients didn't experience noticeable vision problems during the study. For individuals with healthy eyes, these minor changes likely won't impact vision immediately.
However, scientists stated that if these changes persist for years, they could result in corneal swelling or blurred vision, particularly in those with pre-existing eye conditions or individuals who have undergone a corneal transplant.

A thicker cornea and reduced cell density may contribute to eye conditions like corneal oedema, bullous keratopathy, or corneal decompensation, which can all lead to permanent vision loss in severe cases, especially if left untreated, reports the Express.
The researchers cautioned in the study, published Wednesday (July 16) in the journal Ophthalmic Epidemiology: "The endothelium should be closely monitored in those with a low endothelial count or who have had a corneal graft."
Nevertheless, the team did not advise against the Pfizer jab and will still require long-term studies on additional patients' vision to determine if these alterations persist months and years following the injections.

A representative from Pfizer UK stated they regarded the findings "very seriously".
In a statement to the Express, they said: "Patient safety is paramount and we take any reports of adverse events very seriously. Adverse event reports do not imply causality, and in the context of vaccination such events may be unrelated to administration of the vaccine.
"Hundreds of millions of doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine have been administered globally and the benefit-risk profile of the vaccine remains positive for all authorised indications and age groups.

"As with every medicine and vaccine, including the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, Pfizer has robust processes to meet its regulatory responsibilities to closely monitor, report and analyse all adverse events, and collect relevant information to assess any new potential safety risks that may be associated with the COVID-19 vaccine."
Pfizer said as well as their pharmacovigilance efforts and compliance with regulatory requirements related to quality and safety, they also work with regulatory authorities to independently monitor the safety profile of the vaccine.

In any case, patients who receive the COVID-19 vaccine "should talk to their doctor, pharmacist or nurse if they have any concerns or experience any side effects" - including any possible side effects not listed in the package leaflet.
"As with all medicines and vaccines... Pfizer has stringent procedures in place to fulfil its regulatory obligations to closely monitor, report, and analyse all adverse events, as well as gather pertinent information to evaluate any new potential safety risks that may be associated with the COVID-19 vaccine," the spokesperson added.

Picturesque Scottish walk leading to 'mysterious and magical' caves with prehistoric secrets

The trail to the caves is along the North Coast 500 and starts from a car park on the A837 between Elphin and Inchnadamph The Highlands are home to some of the UK's most breathtaking walking routes. And one stunning trail in Assynt is drawing interest for its history, wildlife and dramatic scenery. ‌ The route leads walkers to the atmospheric and aptly named Bone Caves, where the remains of animals including lynx, reindeer, and even polar bears have been uncovered. ‌ Situated near Inchnadamph, the Bone Caves have been described by Inchnadamph Explorers Lodge as one of the 'most mysterious and magical places' in the country. ‌ The name stems from the extraordinary prehistoric finds discovered inside, offering a rare glimpse into Scotland's ancient wildlife, Express reports. The caves are carved into the high limestone cliff walls of Creag nan Uamh, which translates as Crag of the Caves. Today, four shallow limestone caves remain, each around five metres deep and just tall enough for an adult to stand upright in. However, these visible caves are only a fragment of what was once a much larger system. Over time, natural erosion has deepened the valley, cutting away sections of the caves and leaving the remnants perched high and dry along the cliff face. ‌ First recorded in 1889 by geologists Peach and Horne, the caves became a site of major archaeological interest in 1928 when J.E. Cree conducted excavations and made several significant discoveries. Among the finds were human skeletons, a bear tooth, antlers, and the bones of now-extinct animals such as wolves, arctic foxes, and even a Northern lynx, the only one ever found in Scotland. ‌ Many of the artefacts recovered from the site are now held at the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The route to the Bone Caves is a popular walk along the North Coast 500 and is accessible via a car park on the A837 between Elphin and Inchnadamph. ‌ From there, it is a 30-minute hike to reach the Allt nan Uamh, or Burn of the Caves. The walk is described as moderately easy, though some rocky areas and steep climbs require good footwear and care. Walkers are rewarded with sweeping views of the surrounding wilderness, with snow-capped peaks and rugged terrain providing a dramatic backdrop. The trail offers a sense of solitude and immersion in nature, with many saying it feels like being in the heart of nowhere. ‌ Visitors have shared their experiences on TripAdvisor, praising the scenery and atmosphere of the site. One reviewer wrote: "Amazing walk, amazing scenery and a real sense of atmosphere when you arrive at the bone caves. Fairly easy most of the way, a few rocky areas." ‌ Another commented: "This is a great walk, only takes about one hour each way. Should have a stick and good shoes for walking but otherwise very simple walk. Certainly recommend this if in the area, really pretty walk and great views from the caves." A third added: "These are a set of natural pre-Ice Age caves set high in a limestone cliff, where a large number of animal bones were discovered during excavation (hence the name). "It's a beautiful trail through a deep, secluded valley with a steep climb up to the caves followed by a sharp vertigo-inducing descent right along the edge of the cliff back to the valley. We were greeted by a deer at the end of our walk!"

North Wales MS Mark Isherwood introduces Sign Language Bill

As I said 'too often, Deaf people are unable to access vital public services because they cannot communicate in their first language. This denies them their rights, and places them at a significant disadvantage - whether in healthcare, education, employment, transport, or otherwise. The Bill aims to address this by introducing a legal requirement to promote and facilitate the use of BSL in Wales'. If passed, this will be the most progressive BSL law in the UK. BBC Radio Wales also interviewed me about my Bill. Questioning the First Minister, I spoke of the substantial sum of Shared Prosperity Funding allocated to communities throughout North Wales by the previous UK Government, and said it is vital that changes to the way this funding is allocated by the current Labour UK Government do not result in North Wales losing out. Questioning the Health Secretary about the temporary closure of St David's Hospice's in-patient beds in Holyhead, I highlighted the financial difficulties Hospices throughout Wales are facing, and their need for support to deliver more for individuals, families and the NHS. Speaking in the Debate on 'the Wales COVID-19 Inquiry Special Purpose Committee Report' as Chair of the Senedd's Public Accounts and Public Administration Committee, I said that the Committee have agreed to lead the scrutiny of gaps identified by the soon to be disbanded Wales COVID-19 Inquiry Special Purpose Committee in relation to the UK Inquiry Module 1 'to ensure that some scrutiny of these important matters is done within this Senedd, rather than none'. Meetings included Cross-Party Group for Funerals and Bereavement, at which I was re-elected as its Chair; Cross-Party Groups on Diabetes and on Dementia; Autism support Charity 'Your Space Marches' AGM; Bipolar UK; counsellor training provider Chrysalis, to discuss how qualified counsellors can support local mental health objectives; and 'STAND North Wales' (Stronger Together for Additional Needs and Disabilities), regarding their Petition to the Welsh Parliament Petitions Committee, 'Make Blue badge Applications Lifelong for individuals who have a lifelong diagnosis'. Engagements included UK Covid Inquiry Special Briefing by Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice Cymru; Jonathan's House (a sanctuary for men after experiencing abuse); and the Senedd's Y Farchnad, where I visited Welsh NHS Confederation, Competition and Markets Authority, Two Rhythms, Royal Mail, Welsh Cross Party Group on Beer and Pubs, Wales & West Utilities, Severe ME Difrifol Cymru, and BookTrust Cymru.
