Google is reading your WhatsApp messages by default - here's how to stop it

Metro6 days ago
Google can now read your WhatsApp messages by default, a move experts told Metro raises 'concerns about user consent'.
Android phone users received an email last week from the tech giant saying that, as of yesterday, Gemini AI, can access third-party apps.
This means that people can pick up their phones and say, 'send a WhatsApp to [contact],' and the artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot will do just that.
While Gemini has long had this power, the change means the bot will have access even if you previously turned tracking for Gemini Apps Activity off.
The email said: 'We've made it easier for Gemini to interact with your device. We're updating how Gemini interacts with some of the apps on your Android device.
'Gemini will soon be able to help you use your Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and utilities on your phone, whether your Gemini Apps Activity is on or off.'
Gemini does not run locally, so all communications it can access are sent to Google, according to tech platform Tuta.
Google stresses that Gemini can't read your WhatsApp messages or see the images you send.
The app 'may support some of these actions with help from Google Assistant or the Utilities app, even with WhatsApp disabled in Gemini', according to a Google support webpage.
The page adds that to help improve the 'quality' of Gemini, 'human reviewers (including service providers) read, annotate, and process your Gemini Apps conversations'.
Google says: 'Please don't enter confidential information in your conversations or any data you wouldn't want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our products, services, and machine-learning technologies.'
If Gemini has been deleted from your phone and is not integrated into your Android system, it will not be automatically installed after July 7.
Tech experts told Metro that allowing Gemini to access third-party apps by default 'raises serious concerns about user consent, data boundaries, and AI overreach'.
Daniel Frech, a business advisor at Businessmagnet, said: 'The issue isn't just whether Gemini can read your messages, it's that it could, unless users proactively opt out.
'That flips the principle of informed consent on its head.'
Andy Callaghan, the founder of the booking system Jammed, said that disabling Gemini's access isn't 'straightforward or easy to find'.
He added: 'Anyone using Gemini or similar AI assistants should check their settings carefully. Make sure you understand what permissions you've granted and revoke any that feel intrusive.'

Google stroes your prompts in My Activity to 'provide, improve, develop, and personalise' Google products.
If you manually switch this function off, the data will be stored for up to 72 hours for saferty and user feedback reasons, Google says.
Gemini is a type of AI called a large language model, an algorithm that trains itself by gobbling up data so it can mimic human speech.
This data can include information from a phone user's personal log, which Gemini has had access to through downloadable extensions. More Trending
Google told Ars Technica that the update is 'good for users'.
The company added: 'They can now use Gemini to complete daily tasks on their mobile devices like send messages, initiate phone calls, and set timers while Gemini Apps Activity is turned off.
'With Gemini Apps Activity turned off, their Gemini chats are not being reviewed or used to improve our AI models.'

Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold: Geekbench Leak Spotted!

The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold has made its debut on Geekbench, offering an early glimpse into its performance capabilities. While the device demonstrates clear advancements over its predecessor, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, it falls short of matching the raw processing power of Samsung's Galaxy ZFold 7. This comparison underscores Google's ongoing strategy of prioritizing AI-driven features and software optimizations over competing solely on hardware specifications. Watch this video on YouTube. Performance Breakdown: Pixel 10 Pro Fold vs. Galaxy ZFold 7 The Pixel 10 Pro Fold achieves a single-core score of 2276 and a multi-core score of 6173 on Geekbench. These results reflect a notable improvement over the Pixel 9 Pro Fold but remain behind the Galaxy ZFold 7, which features a single-core score of 2826 and a multi-core score of 9053. This performance disparity highlights the distinct priorities of these two devices: The Galaxy ZFold 7 focuses on speed and computational power , catering to users who demand top-tier performance for intensive tasks. , catering to users who demand top-tier performance for intensive tasks. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold emphasizes a balanced user experience, using AI and smart optimizations to improve usability and efficiency. While the Galaxy ZFold 7 appeals to power users, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold targets those who value intelligent software features and seamless integration with Google's ecosystem. Under the Hood: Tensor G5 vs. Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Elite At the core of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold lies Google's Tensor G5 chip, a processor designed to enhance AI capabilities and optimize smart features. This aligns with Google's broader strategy of prioritizing machine learning and user-centric functionality over sheer processing power. The Tensor G5 chip enables features such as advanced voice recognition, real-time translation, and improved photo processing, making the device a strong contender for users who prioritize practical, everyday functionality. In contrast, Samsung's Galaxy ZFold 7 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Elite, a chipset engineered for peak performance. This processor excels in both single-core and multi-core tasks, making the Galaxy ZFold 7 a leader in raw computational power within the foldable smartphone market. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Elite is particularly well-suited for demanding applications such as gaming, video editing, and multitasking, giving Samsung a clear edge in performance benchmarks. Advancements Over the Pixel 9 Pro Fold The Pixel 10 Pro Fold represents a significant leap forward compared to its predecessor. Get a free Samsung Galaxy Watch - tech editor shares where to find it

Our tech commerce editor has found a way to get a Samsung smartwatch for free A smartwatch is often considered one of the best accessories to pair with a phone, a close contender to a speedy pair of wireless earphones. Whether it's the newest Apple Watch Ultra, a flagship Galaxy Watch, or a cheaper fitness-based alternative like Fitbit or Garmin. Anyone on the lookout for an Android-pairing wearable, we've found a way to get a Samsung Watch completely free. The Galaxy Watch7 BT usually retails for more than £280, but it's been slashed to £0 for Carphone Warehouse shoppers. The catch is, consumers will have to buy a Samsung mobile to claim the 2024 model. As a tech commerce editor, scouring sites for deals and standout perks is something I do each day, and it's not often you see a free smartwatch offered to shoppers - I've rounded up exactly what shoppers need to do to qualify. First up, the handset. The deal is only available on the S24 FE device, the 'fan edition' of last year's S range. As a quick background, this model is designed to offer similar features to the Galaxy S24 range but cuts back on processor speeds and sensors to justify the cheaper price. Another thing worth flagging to S24 FE shoppers, is the handsets cameras aren't as advanced as the standard S24 range. In comparison to the S24 usual £759 price - or now £659 in Samsung's sale - the S24 FE is £599 at Carphone Warehouse. But there's also the option to pick an iD Mobile plan and spread the cost across a 24-month plan - although we'd should point out that this comes with an £89.99 upfront fee. Buying a brand-new mobile isn't the only way to get a good deal on a wearable accessory. Amazon is offering a cheaper price on the fitness Fitbit trackers - this Inspire 3 model is now £58.99. The Garmin Forerunner, which is a step up from Fitbit with advanced training guidance, is reduced to £122.99 at Amazon too. The next point to flag is crucial, and not one made obvious on the shopping listing. The free watch is only available to claim to shoppers who pick a specific colour of the S24 FE mobile - green to be precise. This can be found in the small print of the Samsung T&C's - which we trailed through, here. Once Samsung shoppers have bought the Galaxy S23 FE mobile, they have 30 days after purchase to claim the £0 Galaxy Watch, of course with proof of purchase and by the July 29 deadline. And there's lots of retailer options. Personally, this is a part of the offer which I rate, as shoppers can take their own time to compare prices about the participating retailers. Which include Sky Mobile, so ideal for pay-as-you-go consumers, Very, Asda Mobile and Argos (to name a few). For those contemplating rival Sky Mobile, the handset starts at £18 per month, with data added on top. The provider is also running an offer on data anyone who picks 25GB of monthly data will get it doubled for free for a 12-month period. The only downside to Sky is its longer plans, which compared to the above 24-month iD Mobile plan, it's a much longer contract at a minimum 36-months.
