
Welsh lamb and beef to be promoted in New York
Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales will promote the goods at the New York Summer Fancy Food Show, taking place from Saturday to Monday, to help strengthen trade links with America.
Samples will be served and cooking demonstrations held while HCC and Welsh exporters will also take part in meetings and discussions.
Jason Craig, HCC's market development lead, said: "Since the American market reopened several years ago, HCC has been working to develop trade in the market.
"America is a market with large potential and we have seen small but significant growth in terms of trade volumes over the last couple of years."
The USA reopened to UK beef exports in 2020 and to lamb in 2022, following the lifting of a 20-year ban.
HCC, in partnership with the Welsh Government, will also host a 'Celebration of Welsh Lamb' event at the British Consulate in New York.

British holidaymakers heading to the Balearics this summer could find themselves caught in a storm of strikes and disruption after last-ditch talks between unions and hotel bosses collapsed on Thursday evening. Confirmation that talks had failed came late last night, after a tense day of negotiations that had initially broken off for a midday lunch break. Hopes of a breakthrough were dashed when union bosses walked out around 6.30pm and immediately announced the strike plan. At the heart of the dispute is a bitter standoff over wages. Workers' representatives had lowered their pay demands to a 16% increase over three years - but employers refused to budge beyond an 11% offer. Hotel bosses had already upped a previous offer to 9.5% earlier this month, but that too was dismissed in talks on June 11, with unions warning then that industrial action was imminent. UGT union spokesman Jose Garcia described the offer as 'more crumbs' and accused hotel owners of expecting workers to survive on tips. After yesterday's failed meeting, he said: 'We'd come here to negotiate to improve the conditions of service industry workers, not to worsen them.' Javier Fich, president of the Majorca Hotel Business Federation, admitted the talks had failed and placed blame squarely on the union side, saying negotiators had been 'too focused' on wages. The federation vice-president Maria Jose Agilo added: 'We regret and condemn the behaviour of the UGT union, which from the start has put on the table a strike threat which doesn't favour a good negotiating climate.' The bad news from the Balearic Islands followed close on the heels of a last-minute deal to avert the threat of hotel strike action in Tenerife and three of the other Canary Islands in the Atlantic archipelago. Union representatives and employers sealed the deal after reaching a wage rise increase agreement.

The welfare state has become absurdly dysfunctional
Britain's 12.9 million pensioners are better off financially than they have ever been, and certainly compared with the rest of the country. Their winter fuel allowance has been restored. The triple lock looks completely secure. And with the stock market close to record highs, any savings they have will be in a healthy state as well. There is just one snag. More of them are paying tax than ever before – and that is emblematic of a bloated welfare system that has become completely dysfunctional. Another 420,000 people over the state pension age will have to pay some income tax in 2025-26, bringing the total to 8.7 million, according to the latest data from HMRC. It is not hard to work out why. The threshold for starting to pay income tax has been frozen at £12,570 since 2021, and with the public finances already out of control, it is not likely to be raised any time soon. This is the result of a political class that always takes easy, short-term decisions Meanwhile, the triple lock has meant that the basic state pension has risen from £9,332 to £11,973 over the same period. A pensioner needs hardly any additional income from savings or investments before they have to start paying tax. Indeed, by 2027, according to forecasts from the Office for Budget Responsibility, the state pension will be above the income tax threshold. Anyone receiving just the basic pension and nothing else will also have to pay some tax. This is crazy. Sure, everyone agrees that well-off pensioners – and there are plenty of those – should pay tax on their income. But the government will very soon be in the absurd position of dishing out money to pensioners with one hand and then taking it back with another. The cash is just recycled, with lots of forms to be filled in and lots of potential for mistakes along the way. The British welfare state is broken. Of course, it is the result of a political class that always takes easy, short-term decisions. It sounds better to protect the triple lock than to admit that pension spending is unaffordable. And it is less painful to freeze thresholds than to increase the basic rate of tax. The trouble is, it also creates a system that is more and more unworkable – and will ultimately collapse under its own absurdity.
