Where has the Kyle Tucker the Chicago Cubs thought they could count on gone?
Tucker suffered a finger injury on June 1 against the Cincinnati Reds, and the difference between the numbers he put up before and after that date is fairly staggering. In the 59 games up to and including that date, his OPS was .918. In 52 games since, it's .786.
Tucker's slump has gotten particularly bad lately, and it's coincided with the Cubs going 9-9 since the All-Star break. He's hitting .212 with just a .308 slugging percentage since the second half began.

No baseball player likes to use the injury excuse, but the reality is that it's hard to perform at your best if you don't feel your best. So how much is that finger injury actually affecting the superstar's performance?
Tucker spoke to The Athletic's Sadahev Sharma about the injury in a piece published on Friday, trying to downplay its impact.
"I mean, it's fine," Tucker said. "I gotta do my job regardless of how I feel. I'll just continue that the best I can."
Sharma also spoke to Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer, who was more willing to admit that the injury was affecting Tucker one way or another.
"I don't know how much is pain, discomfort, how much is bad habits you got into to compensate for something, and just how much is a slump," Hoyer said, per Sharma. "There's no question it's had some impact on him."
Knowing that this could very well be the only year the Cubs have Tucker, the idea that he could be playing as a lesser version of himself is tough to swallow.
Though it might cost them a shot at taking back the division from the surging Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs' top priority should be getting Tucker whatever treatment he needs to be at 100% by the time October arrives.

Kyle Schwarber NL MVP Odds: Can Red-Hot Phillies Slugger Catch Ohtani?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. When we checked in on the NL and AL MVP odds in late July following the MLB All-Star Break, there wasn't much to break down in either league. In the AL, Yankees star Aaron Judge was shorter than -500 across the board, while Shohei Ohtani was even further ahead of the pack in the NL, at -1600. Though 60-plus games remained in the regular season at that point, Ohtani appeared well on his way to winning the award yet again after capturing it in 2021, 2023 and 2024. Judge's recent injury has opened the door to current MLB home run leader Cal Raleigh, who hit his league-best 42nd home run of the year on July 31. In fact, Raleigh's odds are now as short as +220 (as of August 8), as we'll detail below. National League MVP Betting Odds But for now, let's ask the question that many baseball fans have been wondering about, especially in Philadelphia in the immediate aftermath of Schwarber's two-home run night vs. the Orioles last Monday: Does Kyle Schwarber, who has hit 40 home runs in 114 games to date this year, have a chance to deny Ohtani his third straight National League MVP trophy? DK FD BetMGM Shohei Ohtani -1400 -1500 -1000 Kyle Schwarber +750 +900 +550 Unfortunately, as you can see above, the short answer right now is, "not exactly." Schwarber, it is worth noting, was available at as short as +500 at some sportsbooks earlier this week. But unfortunately for anyone hoping to see Schwarber stay on Ohtani's heels down the stretch this year, the Dodgers star racked up four total hits -- including a double and a home run -- in his team's last three games on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The promising news for Schwarber is that three of the Phillies' next four series are against playoff contenders in the Rangers (Aug. 8-10), Reds (Aug. 11-13) and Mariners (Aug. 18-20). With some fireworks in those high-profile series, Schwarber could stay within arm's reach of Ohtani as the schedule inches toward the final month of the regular season. Schwarber, who has hit 10 homers in 18 games since the break, is on pace to finish the season with 57 dingers, but at this point, it seems like he would need to get to 60 -- and top Raleigh -- to steal a significant number of votes from Ohtani. One last note on Schwarber before we turn our attention to the AL race: his 10 homers in 18 games since the break is well ahead of both Raleigh (4) and Ohtani (7). American League MVP Betting Odds DK FD BetMGM Aaron Judge -400 -410 -325 Cal Raleigh +265 +270 +220 Despite hitting just four home runs in his last 18 games since the All Star break, Raleigh's MVP campaign is getting stronger thanks to an injury that favorite Aaron Judge just returned from on August 5. In his first two games back from a right elbow flexor strain he suffered in late July, Judge filled the Yankees' DH spot and went a combined 1-for-6, with a walk and three strikeouts. As long as Raleigh keeps getting on base -- he has 15 hits since the break, including a nine-game streak with a hit from July 20-29 that included multiple 2-hit games -- the AL MVP race could get even more competitive as we get closer to September. And obviously, if Raleigh gets the long ball going again after going yard just once in his last nine games, he could absolutely beat out Judge for this award, so stay tuned to the Mariners breakout star. At the moment, it feels too soon to recommend a bet on Raleigh, but if Judge continues to show the effects of his elbow issue at the plate, a play on Raleigh could be justified sometime within the next week. Sixers' Tyrese Maxey lands in top-10 of latest point guard rankings

Tyrese Maxey had his season cut short due to a tendon injury in his finger. His absence toward the end of the season was just another roadblock the Philadelphia 76ers had to navigate, as he joined All-Stars Paul George and Joel Embiid on the inactive players list. Despite the early ending to his season, Maxey had impressed in the 52 regular-season games he'd suited up for. The 24-year-old guard ended the campaign with averages of 26.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 6.1 dimes per game, shooting 43.7% from the field. When contextualizing those numbers with the limited star talent around him, Maxey had a very strong showing for Nick Nurse's team. As a reward for his impressive performances, Maxey now finds himself ranked as a top-10 point guard in the NBA in HoopsHype's annual point-guard rankings. "A volume scorer with good playmaking ability, Tyrese Maxey missed out on All-Star honors last season, but he performed at that level," HoopsHype's Frank Urbina wrote. "Maxey even had a career season on the defensive end, averaging nearly two steals per contest, playing the role of chaotic pest well on the less glamorous end of the Maxey remains one of the top scoring-minded point guards in the NBA today thanks to his elite quickness and valuable pull-up shooting ability, and the Philadelphia 76ers rightfully value him as such." Maxey will have a new backcourt partner this season, as Nurse and his coaching staff look to integrate VJ Edgecombe into the rotation, thus giving the Sixers an exciting young core in the backcourt. Nevertheless, as we head into the 2025-26 season, the hope will be that Maxey's injury issue is behind him and that he'll be ready to showcase some new improvements to his ever-expanding game. Factor in a potentially healthy season for George and maybe Embiid, and there's a lot to be excited about if you're a Sixers fan.

Caitlin Clark says no timetable for return as Fever lose two more guards for season

The Indiana Fever, who are already without All-Star guard Caitlin Clark, announced Friday they have lost two more guards — Sydney Colson (left ACL tear) and Aari McDonald (broken right foot) — for the remainder of the season. League rules don't allow the Fever to sign a hardship player until after Saturday's game against Chicago, meaning they will have nine players available for that contest. The teams meet at 8 p.m. ET at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Colson and McDonald each suffered injuries during the Fever's loss to the Phoenix Mercury on Thursday, Aug. 7. Colson was injured in the first quarter of the game in Phoenix while trying to track down the basketball near the Fever's bench. McDonald left the game limping in the fourth quarter. Neither player returned. For her part, Clark appeared on Sue's Bird podcast, "Bird's Eye View," on Friday and spoke about the frustrations of her injury-filled season and not having a grip on when she will be able to come back. After winning Rookie of the Year in 2024, Clark has played in 13 of 32 games this season and remains out indefinitely with a right groin injury. 'Obviously, there are really frustrating days and there are days where it's a little bit easier and you're very motivated and you're close to the finish line of getting back," Clark told Bird on the podcast. 'It's not like I have a training camp to build up to play in my first game again. It's like no, you're tossed into game 30 — like, 'Go try to play well.' It's hard, it really is.' Clark is averaging 16.5 points, five rebounds and 8.8 assists, she's shooting just 36.7% from the field, including 27.9% from 3-point range. Notably, she is 2 of 35 from behind the arc on the road. "It's just been so challenging being active, playing four games, and then not," Clark said. "Not feeling the best and then frustrated of how hard I worked in the offseason and all I do is rehab and continue to do this process. "That's been the hardest part, the stop-and-go of everything." Clark shared that she understands how much fans enjoy seeing her play and plans to continue to travel with Indiana Fever regardless of her injury. "You want to play," Clark said, knowing that people bought tickets for her games to get the chance to see a deep 3-pointer or amazing pass. "But I still try and make it memorable. I am going to sign autographs for way longer when I am hurt than when I am not injured." Clark started the season with a left quad injury, then injured her left groin and now the right. She her mom texted her after the most recent setback, who urged her to take the time she needs to heal. "She said, 'You have given so much to the game, take some time for yourself,'" Clark said. Clark also eluded about her career after basketball, joking about becoming a college coach because of the lack of defense played at that level. She then talked about being on the sidelines at games, "coaching the refs." "I should be ref," she joked. "I'd wouldn't miss a call."
