Tennessee swimmers set NCAA record at SEC Championships
ATHENS, Ga. (WATE) — The 2025 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships are underway and Tennessee turned in a record-setting performance on Wednesday.
Tennessee's men's 200 freestyle relay team shattered the NCAA record with a blistering time of 1:12.80, eclipsing the previous best held by Florida by more than a half a second. The historic performance clinched Tennessee's first SEC title in the event since 2001.

The record-breaking team consisted of Jordan Crooks, Gui Caribe, Lamar Taylor and Nikoli Blackman. Crooks, who represented the Cayman Islands at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, also took home the SEC title in the 50-meter freestyle. He is the first swimmer in SEC history to win four straight titles in the event and just the 10th athlete to achieve the feat in any event.
Fellow Olympic veteran Caribe captured the bronze in the 50 free with a time of 18.42, the second fastest in school history.

The Lady Vols also enjoyed a successful night in Athens. Camille Spink defended her 50 free title with a personal-best time of 21.23, the second-fastest time in program history. She is the first SEC swimmer to win consecutive title in the event since former Lady Vol Erika Brown won three straight from 2018-2020.
Tennessee has won nine medals, including five gold, through the first three days of the SEC Championships. The competition will continue conclude on Saturday, February 22.

Instead, the league's overall attendance declined by 5%, according to the Sports Business Journal. Seven of the UFL's eight home markets had their average attendance drop in 2025, with the Michigan Panthers' 30.4% increase in attendance serving as the outlier. Four markets – Arlington, Birmingham, Houston and Memphis – averaged fewer than 10,000 fans per game. The league's TV viewership also declined, as its games had an average of 645,000 viewers in 2025, down from 812,000 in 2024. While the results weren't what the league was hoping, its leadership continues to insist it is willing to do whatever it takes to create growth across its eight markets. "We're not shying away from it," UFL president Russ Brandon said of the league's attendance challenge at the league's championship game media day in St. Louis. "It's certainly something that we're running towards." It played its first game as a unified spring league just 15 months ago after the USFL and XFL merged ahead of the 2024 season. "We haven't even gotten to our 'Terrible Twos' yet," UFL owner Dany Garcia said with a smile. Brandon noted the 2024 merger – which closed on Jan. 13, just more than two months ahead of the league's March 28 start date – prevented the UFL from focusing significant resources on market growth ahead of its first season together. "We were drinking out of a fire hose operationally to get up and running," Brandon explained. The UFL was better positioned to start addressing its attendance challenges in 2025. It spent resources adding personnel and advertising in each of the league's eight home markets while attempting to create more connectivity between those markets and the UFL Hub in Arlington. Even so, the league was still learning about itself and the audience with which it was trying to connect. "Our first-year merge was murky for us to understand; what does the market actually think of us, and who are we?" Garcia said. "This is the year that we got the clarity, and now we know who we are, and now we push forward." What will pushing forward entail? Brandon offered that the league is "looking at every way to re-engage and look at our marketplace in each separate silo as we move forward." "We know this: We have a great product. We know it's affordable," Brandon said. "We're trying to activate as much as possible in each of these local markets. And we have a great plan, I believe, in place to do that." He also noted the league isn't worried at all about the ratings decline, opining they were still "phenomenal" compared to other programming. "People would give their eyeteeth for the amount of eyeballs that are watching our games on TV," he said. But for now, the UFL's executive vice president of football operations Daryl Johnston acknowledged the league wants its focus to remain on celebrating the Michigan Panthers and DC Defenders as they square off in the league's season-concluding championship game. "When the time comes and the time is right, then we'll start to reflect back and find out some of the whys," Johnston said, referencing the league's attendance challenges, "and then how can we implement that moving forward to make sure that we're getting better every year."

Tennessee Titans to have joint practices with the Atlanta Falcons ahead of preseason game
When the NFL announced its 2025 schedule, the Tennessee Titans discussed the possibility of taking part in joint practices with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons in weeks one and two of the preseason. On Monday, Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris announced that the arrangements have been made and that they will hold joint practices with the Titans ahead of the Week 2 preseason game in Atlanta. This approach should help speed up the process of getting Cam Ward up to speed with live reps against another franchise. The two teams will hold joint sessions on August 12 and 13 prior to their August 15 battle. At this point, no specifics have been given on what will take place for the Titans on August 14, but with so many new faces it will likely be some type of walkthrough. Advertisement During his first season as head coach, Brian Callahan held joint practices with the Seattle Seahawks prior to their Week 2 preseason battle, after which he eventually held out many veterans from the subsequent game. WIth so many new and young faces fighting it out for spots on the depth chart, it will be interesting to see what his philosophy is now in his second year. The Titans will be holding another open practice on Tuesday and Callahan will likely address the media, with Morris making the announcement during his press availability in Atlanta on Monday, Callahan could offer more insight during that press availability. Wings acquire center Li Yueru from Storm, who fills immediate roster need
The Dallas Wings are adding some frontcourt help for No. 1 pick Paige Bueckers. The team acquired center Yi Lueru from the Seattle Storm on Saturday in exchange for a 2026 second-round pick and 2027 third-rounder. Lueru, 26, recently requested a trade, dissatisfied with the playing time she was getting with the Storm. Averaging 8.7 minutes, the 6-foot-7 center was scoring 2.8 points and 1.6 points in nine games. Advertisement A third-round selection of the Atlanta Dream in 2019, Lueru has been traded three times during her WNBA career while playing for the Chicago Sky and Los Angeles Sparks. Last season with the Sparks, she averaged 5.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, shooting 49% from the floor. During the offseason, Yueru went to the Storm as part of the blockbuster three-team deal that sent Jewell Loyd to the Las Vegas Aces and Kelsey Plum to the Sparks. Prior to joining the WNBA, Yueru played nine seasons in the Women's Chinese Basketball Association for the Guangdong Dolphins and Inner Mongolia. Thus far, her production has been far below her performance for the Chinese national team, for whom she scored 17.7 points with 11 rebounds per game during last summer's Paris Olympics. The Chinese federation reportedly wants Yueru to receive more playing time if she continues playing in the WNBA, according to ESPN. Advertisement That could happen with Dallas, who only has one true center on the roster in Luisa Geiselsoder. Geiselsoder is averaging 6.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. However, she left the Wings to play for Germany in EuroBasket, so Yueru fills an immediate need on the roster. Despite their last-place 1-11 record. the Wings average 35.7 rebounds per game, fifth in the WNBA. Yueru will presumably help with that. Bueckers is scoring 17.4 points with 6.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game, while shooting 42% on 3-pointers. The Wings are also getting 16.6 points per game from Arike Ogunbowale. Dallas has lost seven consecutive games after Friday's 88-84 defeat to the Aces. The Wings are off until Tuesday when they host the Golden State Valkyries.
