Simon Cowell stops performance of 13-year-old 'America's Got Talent' singer called 'young Justin Bieber' by judges

Chase Varnes, a 13-year-old musician from Vancouver Island in the Canadian province of British Columbia, had a scary encounter with judge Simon Cowell Tuesday on America's Got Talent.
Varnes had just started singing and playing guitar when Cowell, the man who helped Nicole Scherzinger assemble One Direction on the U.K. version of The X Factor in 2010, stopped him abruptly.
"I hate to do this," said Cowell, who has, in fact, stopped acts before. "I didn't love the song; however, I like you. Have you got another song?"
Varnes broke into Ed Sheeran's "Life Goes On," and it was a hit with audiences and most of the judges.
"You know, you remind me of a young Justin Bieber," judge Howie Mandel told Varnes, who lit up at the compliment. Like his fellow Canadian, Varnes has put in his time busking.
Judge Sofia Vergara was also complimentary.
"I know it's nerve-racking to be on this stage, but I thought it was better the second song," Vergara said. "Simon always knows how to stop it and make it better. I think the girls are gonna go crazy for you."
The third judge, Mel B, was more cautious.
"You were great," the former Spice Girl said. "You were a diamond in the rough with so much potential. But I can see your nervousness. You're not quite there yet for me."
Then Mandel started the voting by giving him a "yes." While Vergara did the same, Mel B held out.
"I think, give yourself another year, then come back when you're more confident,' she said. "I have to say no, I'm sorry."
But Cowell saved the clear audience favorite, who only needed one more ally on the panel."Sometimes we have on people your age, and I'm like, 'Okay, I'll be sort of nicer because you're young," Cowell began. "You, I actually do believe, that you have something.... You've got everything going for you. The audience loved you, which is why you're gonna get three yeses."
Later, the show's stage was overtaken with cats — or at least people dressed like them.
A Baltimore artist who goes by Moshow and is known as "The Cat Rapper" rocked a hat that gave him cat ears and lyrics ("Meow, meow, meow") that did not make the judges purr. At all. While Vergara gave him a "yes" vote, she was the only one. Cowell did, however, note that "the kids are gonna love that song."
The very next act to walk onto the stage was also feline-oriented. And none of the members, who were all dressed as cats, would speak.
It was too much for Mel B, who asked, "Is this some kind of joke?"
But it was real. The group of a dozen or so people, called Loco Pop Familia, did a choreographed routine that left even Mel B impressed, just not enough to win her support.
"You all can really dance," she said, "But. You're so annoying! The whole thing is annoying. The song is annoying. The way that you dressed as cats is not my thing."
Cowell disagreed wholeheartedly and called the act "genius." He also gave them the third vote they needed to move forward.
Upon hearing the good news, the contestants dropped to the floor and crawled off the stage.
America's Got Talent airs at 8 p.m. ET/PT Tuesdays on NBC.

Lil Wayne's Son Claims Rapper Ghostwrote 'Most' Of Drake's Music: 'On God'

Lil Novi, son of Lil Wayne, is claiming that his father ghostwrote the majority of Drake's music. The young artist, 15, made the claim after being asked to choose between his pops and Drizzy as artists during a livestream session. While choosing his father was expected, his reasoning took many aback. 'My dad wrote most of his sh*t. On God. If it wasn't for my pops then it wouldn't be no Drake, for real, for real. I mean, it probably would be a Drake, but he wouldn't be where he at now.' He followed up with, 'No disrespect to Drake. He hard now, but I'm saying… Come on, man. That's not a question.' See the quick clip below. The statement spawned reactions from both Drake fans and critics, with critics highlighting past accusations of the Toronto MC using a ghostwriter. Most, however, dismissed the claim, conceding that as label mates they've likely written together, while doubting Wayne's pen is behind over a decade of Drake hits. 'Super cap, most of Drakes music has substance. Lil Wayne just be rapping bars. Lil Wayne was also exposed for having a ghost writer after falling out, and his music drastically changed,' wrote one supporter via X, with another adding, 'Let's just make this make sense how does his dad write most of Drake sh*t when he doesn't write his own sh*t the majority of Lil Wayne songs are off the top of the dome. He doesn't even know how his dad makes his music.' Lil Wayne signed Drake to his Young Money Entertainment record label in 2009. Born Neal Carter, Lil Novi — whom Wayne shares with singer Nivea — previously stirred the Hip-Hop pot when he declared Playboi Carti to be the greatest rapper of all time — aside from his father, of course. 'Obviously, my dad,' Lil Novi said when asked who is the GOAT. 'But for me, I'd say like because Carti is like the Wayne now. So yeah, Carti.' Sandra Oh says 'Grey's Anatomy' had 'dedicated Sandra whisperer' to deal with her script demands: 'I would fight'

Sandra Oh learned many lessons during her time playing Cristina Yang on Grey's Anatomy, and one of the most important was how to live with discomfort. While speaking to Dartmouth College's graduating class of 2025 on Sunday, the Canadian-born actress urged graduates to find inner strength and kindness while overcoming challenges in their lives. "Nothing has taught me more than being with discomfort," Oh said during her commencement speech, while receiving an honorary doctorate of the arts. "It can be our greatest learning opportunity, and it is also inevitable. So if you can train yourself not to turn away but to learn how to be with your discomfort and trust that it might be telling you something you don't yet know, it can help you develop an inner strength that will enable you to face the challenges life presents you without losing your values or your sense of self along the way." The Emmy-winning performer, who was recommended to give the speech by Darthmouth alum and Grey's mastermind Shonda Rhimes, said that while "the great privilege" of playing Cristina for 10 seasons on ABC's medical drama brought her "financial stability, fame, and privilege," it was also "one of the most challenging decades of my life." "I learned profound lessons during this time because so much of it was so uncomfortable," Oh continued. "When I started Grey's, I was in my early 30s, so I had an idea of who I was and what the work entailed, but I had no idea what was coming. I demanded a lot from myself and from the writers. If something bothered me in a script, I would fight for what I believed what was right for the character of Cristina because I felt responsible for her. And while this contributed to the creation of a memorable character, my desire to make the dialogue fit and my belief that I knew what was best for the character also caused grief for the writers and for me." Oh told graduates that the Shondaland production had a "dedicated Sandra whisperer on staff" who was tasked with coming to the Grey's set to "deal with me." "That doesn't happen anymore. I am my own whisperer," Oh declared. "One time… the writers and I were at an impasse about something in this script, and I had to have a call with the big boss. And Shonda, I'll never forget, she said to me, 'Sandra, we have been here before. You got to trust me. Something will come through if you just say the damn words.' … It has stayed with me. I heard her." Concluding her speech, Oh channeled her iconic character and proved she still knows the value of "dancing it out." "When the world gets hard, or when it's good — especially when it's good, like today — by yourself, with people you love, with strangers, always take the time to dance it out!" Oh proclaimed. The attendees then rose to their feet to dance in celebration as David Guetta's "Titanium" played. Oh's Cristina Yang rode into the Grey's Anatomy pilot on her motorcycle and stuck around for a decade before leaving Ellen Pompeo's Meredith (and the show) with a reminder that she was the sun in 2014. "I took it very, very seriously," Oh told Entertainment Weekly in March for our Shondaland anniversary celebration. "I knew in my gut that I had done as much as I could. I really, really felt I did my job. I also was very, very cognizant that not many actors get to do this: create a full character and really live through their life, and then actually make the choice to come to a close." Looking back at her final seasons on the show, Oh said she was grateful her early decision "creatively gave the writers a runway, so they could plan" Cristina's final act. "And I think that they planned it beautifully," she said. "It also gave me time to move the audience with me to say goodbye to this character and wish her well. And I think that — at least I hope — myself and the writers, we did that."Since the season 10 finale, the Grey's team has kept Cristina a part of the show's world — albeit only via text messages and other written correspondence. Since her final episode, Oh has been vehement in her stance of not playing Cristina again. But now… "For the longest time, it has always been a hard no. And it's just… I don't know. I just don't know," Oh told EW, searching for the right words. "When you finish something, it's a deep process… I just cannot tell you… I can't stress to you enough how consciously I tried to fully process leaving. I don't feel the need to revisit, but I also profoundly understand the audience's love for this character, because I've seen it for the past 10 years. That's the part that makes me just go, hmmm."
