Dabaa to be largest nuclear project on the planet despite sanctions: Russian company Rosatom CEO
Alexey Likhachev, CEO of the Russian company Rosatom, said that sanctions pose an obstacle to the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Egypt, 'but they will not stop us.'
He pointed out that the project's implementation is proceeding according to the planned schedule, and it is a symbol of the growing cooperation between Russia and Egypt, Izvestia reported.
'This year, this place will become the largest nuclear reactor construction site on the planet – both in terms of area and the number of people,' Likhachev told Izvestia, daily newspaper in Russia.
The Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant is the first nuclear power generation plant in Egypt, and it is being built in the city of Dabaa in Matrouh Governorate on the Mediterranean coast, about 300 kilometers northwest of Cairo.
The Dabaa Nuclear Power Plant consists of four power units with a capacity of 1200 megawatts each, equipped with Russian-made VVER-1200 Generation III+ pressurized water reactors, which are the latest technology and are already implemented in projects that are currently operating successfully, with four nuclear power units of this generation in operation.

Russia's Oil Revenues at Two-year Low
Taarek Refaat Russia's revenues from oil fell last month to their lowest level since June 2023 amid the global oil price slump. Oil-related tax revenues fell 32% year-on-year last month to 430.4 billion rubles ($5.5 billion), according to Bloomberg estimates based on data released by the Finance Ministry on Wednesday. Total oil and gas revenues amounted to 512.7 billion rubles, a decline of more than 35%. Amid the decline in oil prices, the government revised its budget forecast and tripled its fiscal deficit target. Oil revenues fell by more than half in May compared to the previous month, according to Bloomberg estimates. This reflects the fact that one of Russia's main oil taxes—which is levied on profits—is paid four times a year: in March, April, July, and October. The Finance Ministry estimated oil taxes based on an average price of Urals crude at $54.76 per barrel in April, a drop of more than a quarter compared to the same period last year. The price remained below the $60 per barrel ceiling imposed by the Group of Seven nations to squeeze Russia's revenues for the second consecutive month, according to historical data. The rouble's strength has also impacted the price of crude oil in Russia. H-Tayea Deputy Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives and President Emeritus of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM), Mohamed Abou El Enein, delivered a powerful message at the South Partner Consultation Forum hosted by the American University in Cairo, emphasizing that the two-state solution is essential for peace, stability, and sustainable development across the Mediterranean region. Two-State Solution: The Cornerstone of Peace In his remarks, Abou El Enein stated unequivocally that the unresolved Palestinian issue is the main obstacle to progress in the southern Mediterranean. He emphasized that any serious effort to achieve regional development must begin with a political solution founded on justice and international legitimacy. 'The two-state solution is not a slogan—it is the only viable path to ensure peace and unlock prosperity,' he said. 'Without resolving the Palestinian cause, cycles of war will continue to hinder cooperation, scare away investment, and destabilize the region.' Egypt's Leadership and a Call for EU Action Highlighting Egypt's historic role in peacemaking and mediation, Abou El Enein praised Cairo's continuous efforts to restore calm in Gaza and support a long-term solution. He urged the European Union to translate its supportive statements into real, strategic action on the ground, starting with a clearer commitment to the two-state solution and the economic future of the South. 'While China arrives in Cairo with investment proposals and a clear plan, we need the same level of practical engagement from the EU,' he said, calling on Brussels to develop a roadmap that matches ambition with implementation. Economic Stability Requires Political Resolution Abou El Enein noted that political peace and economic prosperity go hand in hand. 'You cannot talk about energy projects, agriculture, or industry while bombs are falling in Gaza,' he said. 'Let us be honest—development is not possible in an environment dominated by conflict.' He emphasized that Egypt and its southern partners are ready for joint development, but international frameworks must prioritize justice and human dignity first. PAM's Role in Mediterranean Dialogue As President Emeritus of PAM, Abou El Enein reaffirmed the organization's full support for the new EU Pact for the Mediterranean and its active contribution to shaping the political and human rights dimensions of that framework. 'Our Charter for the Mediterranean, adopted in 2008, anticipated the same values being discussed today,' he said. He emphasized PAM's unique position as a non-governmental parliamentary platform with unmatched reach and trust across member states, committed to dialogue, peacebuilding, and concrete cooperation. EU official says 175 mln euro Syria recovery package 'clear message' of support - Region
Visiting EU Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Suica said Thursday that a 175 million euro package for war-torn Syria was a "clear message" of support for its reconstruction. Suica announced the package in Damascus Wednesday, saying it would focus on sectors including energy, education, health and agriculture, helping rebuild Syria's economy, support its institutions and promote human rights. "I came here... with a clear message that we are here to assist and help Syria on its recovery," Suica told AFP in an interview on Thursday. "We want that reconstruction and recovery will be Syria-owned and Syria-led," she said, on the first visit by an EU commissioner since a transitional government was unveiled in late March. "We want to see Syria to be a regular, normal, democratic country in the future," she added. Syria has been navigating a delicate transition since Islamist-led forces ousted longtime ruler Bashar al-Assad in December after nearly 14 years of civil war. The European Union announced last month it would lift economic sanctions on Syria in a bid to help its recovery. "This is a pivotal moment -- a new chapter in EU-Syria relations," Suica said on X, calling her meeting with interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa "constructive". Refugee returns should be "safe, voluntary and dignified", Suica said. The EU has not designated Syria as a safe country for returns "because we don't want to push people to come here and then they don't have a home", she said. The EU last month sanctioned three Syrian militia groups and two of their leaders for serious human rights abuses over their alleged involvement in sectarian massacres in the costal heartland of the Alawite minority, to which Assad belongs, in March. "We cannot pronounce one part of Syria safe and another not," Suica said, noting that designating Syria a safe country needs "unanimity among 27 European member states". She said Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani would attend a ministerial meeting involving almost a dozen Mediterranean countries in Brussels on June 23. A statement released on Wednesday said that the European Commission was "actively pursuing the integration of Syria into several key initiatives with its Mediterranean partner countries".
