Over 93 lakh women benefitted from Kanyashree scheme in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee
Taking to the social media platform X, CM Mamata said her government has spent over Rs 17,000 crore in the last 12 years to help women through this scheme.
"Today is Kanyashree Day. The Kanyashree project has completed 12 years today. Many congratulations to all the Kanyashree women across the world, across the country, across Bengal. I don't think there is any other government project that has had such a big impact on women's empowerment in society in such a short time! That's why it is so popular in the world - it won the United Nations Public Service Award, winning first place among 552 projects from 62 countries," Banerjee said.
'Kanyashree Prakalpa' is a targeted conditional cash transfer scheme which is aimed at checking child marriage and retaining girls in schools and other educational institutions.
In 2017, Kanyashree Prakalpa, which is a targeted conditional cash transfer scheme, received the United Nations' highest award, the first place for Public Service.
"I always think that a society where women are not well off can never be well off. Empowerment of women is necessary for the development of society. It is my pride that today there are more than 93 lakh 'Kanyashree women' in our state. Seventeen and a half thousand crore taka has been handed over to them under this project. We don't just talk about women's empowerment. We do it," she said.
The Chief Minister concluded by saying, "I would like to tell all the Kanyashree women to grow up in life and make the face of the country and the state shine. You will one day build a world Bengal. You will wear the crown of respect on your heads in the world."

The Houthis and the U.N.'s Ship of Fools
Leave it to the United Nations to make a bad problem worse. Using donor funds from governments and companies, the U.N. bought a Very Large Crude Carrier, an oil tanker called the Yemen, for $55 million in 2023. The goal was noble. Off Yemen's Houthi-controlled Red Sea coast was a Floating Storage and Offloading vessel called the Safer, which was rusted and at risk of sinking. Inaction spelled potential environmental disaster, involving the release into the ocean of four times as much oil as the Exxon Valdez spill and up to $20 billion in cleanup costs. And so the U.N. sent the VLCC Yemen to empty the FSO Safer. Not everything went according to plan. Following the transfer of oil, the Yemen was supposed to be operated by Yemen's state oil company under the advisory oversight of the U.N. Development Program. In practice, the vessel serves as a floating fuel station for the Houthis. On paper, the U.N. transferred ownership to Yemen's internationally recognized government—but control is what matters, and the Houthis have it. As if seizing the transferred oil wasn't enough, the Houthis are now using the Yemen to help Russia evade sanctions. According to a recent Lloyd's List investigation, the Yemen was involved in transferring more than a million barrels of Russian oil from early 2024 to June 2025. The Valente tanker conducted ship-to-ship transfers with the Yemen in March and April last year. Another vessel, the Savitri, made a delivery in October 2024. The first offloading from the Yemen occurred on this June 10, to a Panama-flagged tanker that then sailed to Ras Isa, the Houthi-controlled port where shore storage has since been damaged by U.S. and Israeli airstrikes. The Yemen has become the Houthis' primary offshore storage hub and a key element of their war economy. All this is being underwritten by the international community. While the Houthis attack commercial vessels and threaten global shipping, the U.N. is bankrolling their offshore oil logistics by paying $450,000 a month for the Yemen's operations. A vessel designed to prevent one catastrophe is facilitating another—moving Russian oil in defiance of sanctions, sustaining the Houthis' illicit fuel economy, and prolonging a regional war. This isn't the U.N.'s first blunder to benefit the Houthis. Since the group seized Yemen's capital in 2014, the U.N. has kept its headquarters in Houthi-held Sana'a rather than relocating to Aden, the internationally recognized government's interim capital. That choice has allowed the Houthis to detain U.N. personnel, storm U.N. offices and exploit aid shipments. Nearly half of all detained U.N. employees worldwide are held by the Houthis. The 2018 Stockholm Agreement made matters worse. Brokered to avert humanitarian disaster from a military offensive to retake Hodeidah port, the agreement cemented Houthi control of this strategically significant economic hub on Yemen's west coast. The U.N. kept its agreement and funded the port's reconstruction, while the Houthis have refused to abide by their commitments. Houthi control over this region has enabled the group to attack more than 100 commercial vessels since November 2023. If the U.S. is serious about restoring deterrence in the Red Sea and enforcing sanctions on Russia, it must cut off Houthi oil flows. While U.S. options are limited by concerns over potential environmental disaster, the Trump administration is already moving in the right direction by terminating a Biden-era authorization earlier this year that allowed oil transactions through Houthi-controlled areas. The White House should go a step further by designating the Yemen as property in which the Houthis have an interest, exposing any vessels or intermediaries that interact with the ship to secondary sanctions. The tragedy of purchasing the Yemen isn't that the U.N. tried to avert an oil spill. It's that the operation was naively conceived, poorly executed and left open to predictable exploitation. Whether it involves Hamas, Hezbollah or the Houthis, good intentions are no substitute for good strategy when confronting Iran's terrorist proxies. "Are They Maoists?" EPS Slams MK Stalin Over Action Against Sanitation Workers
Chennai: AIADMK leader Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) has launched a huge attack on the DMK government in Tamil Nadu led by MK Stalin over the state government's alleged ill-treatment of sanitation workers. At least 900 sanitation workers who had been on a strike for the last 13 days were detained in Chennai. They have objected to the state government outsourcing conservancy services in two city zones. "At the gates of the Ripon Building, in the middle of the night, your administration unleashed oppression - brutally beating and removing sanitation workers who, even during Covid, cleaned up our garbage and kept the city tidy - and detained them at various locations," EPS, who is also Leader of Opposition in the assembly, said in a post on X. "Who are they? Anti-social elements? Gangsters? Maoists? No. They are poor, humble people who work daily to clean and maintain Chennai city. Is it wrong that the sanitation workers, in a lawful manner, protested against you for acting exactly opposite to the promise you gave them?" EPS said. "You happily did photoshoots having tea and coffee with them... Was your friendliness only for that moment? Now, when they are asking you to fulfil your promise, does it make you uncomfortable?" the former chief minister said. EPS reminded Mr Stalin something the chief minister said while the DMK was in the Opposition. "When you were the Leader of the Opposition, in the letters you wrote, didn't you grandstand saying, 'Regardless of any case against them, give these workers permanent jobs.' Do you still remember?" PM Modi asked to give representation on Bengaluru Tunnel Road Project: Dy CM Shivakumar
BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar informed the Legislative Council on Thursday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his recent visit to Bengaluru, directed the state government to submit a formal proposal for the ambitious Tunnel Road Project. The PM's instruction came after he expressed admiration for the Ragigudda Double Decker Project and encouraged its expansion into a 44-km double-decker corridor for the city. Shivakumar was responding to BJP MLC CT Ravi's queries regarding the Tunnel Road Project's feasibility and alleged discrepancies in its Detailed Project Report (DPR). The DCM stated, "The PM said India is seen through Bengaluru and echoed what former PM Vajpayee has told. Hence we asked him to fund the Tunnel Road Project to which he replied saying give a representation and he shall look into it." He added that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) would share the project cost equally. Highlighting Bengaluru's rapid urbanization, Shivakumar noted that the city's population has doubled from 70 lakh to 1.4 crore in 25 years, while vehicle numbers have surged to 1.23 crore. "The city has 25 lakh software engineers compared to 13 lakh in California," he said, emphasizing the need for infrastructure upgrades like the Tunnel Road, Double Decker corridors, and buffer zone roads to ease congestion. The DCM revealed that Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari had advised studying Mumbai's tunnel projects before finalizing plans. After a 1.6-year review, the government decided to proceed. Defending the higher cost compared to metro projects, Shivakumar clarified, "The DPR cost for Tunnel Road was more compared to Metro was due to increase in diameter and length and present-day situation." He detailed that the 14-meter-wide tunnel would accommodate three lanes plus an emergency lane, becoming India's longest upon completion at Rs 770 crore per km. The Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model will see the state contributing 40% and private agencies 60%, with Rs 800 crore allocated for land acquisition.
