Aamir Khan (60) opens up on romancing Genelia D'Souza (37) in Sitaare Zameen Par: ‘That thought did come to me'

Bollywood star Aamir Khan, 60, is all set to share screen space with Genelia D'Souza, 37, in their upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par. Interestingly, it was Aamir who introduced Genelia to Bollywood opposite his nephew Imran Khan in Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na. Now, the actor has opened up about romancing her on screen despite their 23-year age gap, in an interview with The Indian Express. When asked if he was ever concerned about the age difference between himself and Genelia, Aamir said, "Ya, I know. But that was a long time ago. And ab Imran bhi kaafi meri age ka ho gaya hai (laughs). That thought did come to me, but in the film, we're both playing characters in the age group of early 40s. She's around that age."
He added, "I'm 60, but in today's day and age, we have the advantage of VFX. Earlier, if I played an 18-year-old, I had to rely on prosthetics. Like Anil Kapoor did in Eeshwar (1989). He was very young, but he played an 80-year-old for Christ's sake. He was jumping his age, which is very exciting for an actor. Today, he can be made to look 80 and vice versa via VFX. So, age is not a barrier for actors anymore."
The sports comedy-drama is a spiritual sequel to Aamir's 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par. Directed by RS Prasanna, best known for Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, the film stars Genelia as Aamir's wife, alongside 10 debutant actors: Aroush Datta, Gopi Krishna Varma, Samvit Desai, Vedant Sharma, Ayush Bhansali, Ashish Pendse, Rishi Shahani, Rishabh Jain, Naman Mishra, and Simran Mangeshkar.
A remake of the Spanish film Campeones, the film features Aamir as a basketball coach forced to train a team of differently-abled children for a tournament. It is slated to release in cinemas on 20 June.

Aamir Khan defends son Junaid Khan's Maharaj and Loveyapa performances, says he refuses his help: ‘His career matters to me more than mine'

Actor Aamir Khan made his debut in the 1988 film Qayamat se Qayamat Tak, and after a multi-decade career filled with blockbusters and era-defining films, his son Junaid Khan decided to follow in his father's footsteps. Junaid has featured in two films as of yet, Maharaj (2024) and Loveyapa (2025), and much to his dismay, the actor hasn't had the best start in Bollywood. Both films received a lot of backlash for their narratives and also the lack of one, while Junaid faced a lot of heat. In a recent interview, Aamir defended his son and praised his skill as an actor, pointing out that he has the ability to completely transform himself for a particular role. While talking to News18, the actor stated that he was proud of his son's performances and said, 'I think he's a pretty good actor. I'm really proud of the fact that he's done his job really well in both films.' He shifted his attention to Junaid's debut role as Karsandas Mulji in Maharaj and stated that his son was able to completely mould himself into the character. 'That sincerity and innocence he brought to the role was really beautiful,' added Aamir. He said, 'He's used none of my help ever. He still doesn't have a car as we speak. He wants to make his own career.' The actor added that after completing an acting course, Junaid went door to door, looking for a gig, and that he auditioned for many films, including Mira Nair's A Suitable Boy. Aamir admitted that he is protective of his son and wants to help him because 'his career matters to me more than mine,' but that Junaid refuses any kind of help. Junaid will be next seen in the film Ek Din, alongside Sai Pallavi, which Aamir deems to be a role that is completely different from anything he has done before. He said, 'He's done three totally different films. One is Maharaj, a risk in himself. Then there's the Gucci-wearing harami character, who is so far from who he is. And now this love story. He's stepping out of his comfort zone from the start, which I hadn't done in my early career.' Aamir added that even though success has not 'hit' his son yet, Junaid isn't one to quit and will keep fighting until he makes it. On the other hand, Aamir is gearing up for the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, which is a sequel to his 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, a film that gained Aamir an immense amount of love and respect.

EXCLUSIVE: Aamir Khan to release of Sitaare Zameen Par on 1200 screens; Set for a platform release

Over the years, Aamir Khan has come up with the most unique ideas to release his feature films on the big screen. Come June 20, and the actor is all set to introduce another innovation. According to sources close to the development, Aamir Khan along with his national distribution PVRInox are all set to give a platform release to Sitaare Zameen Par, with the idea to increase the show on a real-time basis through the day of release, leading to the opening weekend. According to reliable sources, Sitaare Zameen Par will see an all-India release on about 1000 to 1500 screens on the opening day. 'The makers were exploring several release ideas, and the plan at the moment is to bring the film on approx. 1250 screens. Aamir Khan is confident of the film, and is well aware about the change in audience dynamics, which is the reason why he is looking at a longer game than a shorter one,' revealed a source close to the development. The source further informed that Aamir is confident to evoke a collective emotion among the cine-goers, in a packed auditorium. 'The release will be more concentrated towards the high-performing cinema halls in the respective areas, before slowly transitioning to the mass belts on demand. Given that the film isn't arriving on any OTT platform, Aamir and the team have enough time to adopt the strategy based on word of mouth,' the source added. Sitaare Zameen Par is scheduled to release only on the big screen on June 20, and Aamir is looking to aggressively promote the film post the release too, as he believes that the film has the legs to perform well at the box office in the long run. 'Internationally too, it's a strategic release, though the exact plans would be known closer to the release,' the source concluded. Interestingly, the platform release strategy has been used by Rajshri and YRF in the past on films like Hum Aapke Hai Kaun, Dum Laga Ke Haisha, and Uunchai among others.
