Porter's standout career earns Player of the Year nomination

Yahoo19-04-2025

RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Our fifth and final nominee for girls basketball Player of the Year is Rapid City Stevens standout, Taaliyah Porter.
Taalyiah began playing basketball in second grade, sparking a passion for the game at a young age.
'I started playing at the Y and then my dad ended up making a travel team,' Porter said. 'That was basically what our weekends were filled with. Traveling is where I built my community and where I found that basketball balanced me out.'
Porter began playing varsity as an eighth grader and in her freshman year, found her way into the starting lineup.
Now, the four year starter leaves Rapid City Stevens as one of the most decorated players in program history.
'She's been a staple of our program. She's tough, she's super skilled, her fundamentals,' Rapid City Stevens head coach Adam Dannenbring said.
Taaliyah became the program's all-time leading scorer this season. She has scored 1,667 career points, surpassing South Dakota icon and current WNBA coach, Becky Hammon.
'It's just an outstanding acheivement. That record last for 30 years and for her to break that was a pretty special thing,' Dannenbring said.
'I never realized or dreamed of actually doing that before in my life,' Porter said. 'As soon as the points kept getting closer in the moment, just leading up to it, it was exciting. Me like beating her, was a cool and great experience.'
Porter averaged more than 22 points per game, leading her team to the state tournament, and also earning a nomination for Player of the Year.
'All of my hard work is paying off and I'm getting recognized for all the things that I'm going through,' Porter said. 'Looking back on it, I just never thought I could do it. It's pretty amazing.'
Porter surpassed Hammon's record in a loss to O'Gorman on February 7th.
The girls basketball Player of the Year will be unveiled in our Player of the Year Show on Saturday, April 26 at 9:30 a.m.

Chicago Sky Reach Dubious Milestone on Friday vs. Dream

Chicago Sky Reach Dubious Milestone on Friday vs. Dream originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Things have not quite gone the way the Chicago Sky had hoped here in the 2025 WNBA season, as the team entered Friday's matchup in Atlanta at 2-6, facing the reaminder of their schedule without point guard Courtney Vandersloot, who is out with a torn ACL. Advertisement But playing against a very good Atlanta squad that has come together quickly after some major offseason upheaval--including bringing in star Brittney Griner--the Sky accomplished something in the second quarter that qualifies as a milestone for the team: For the first time in three games, Chicago held a lead. The play came with 6:32 to go in the second period and the Sky down, 23-22. Rachel Banham took a pass from Ariel Atkins and stepped into a 3-point try near the left break. It was true, and Chicago held the lead, 25-23. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese (5) brings the ball up court in the first quarter against the New York Liberty at Barclays Center. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images It was a big moment considering the way the Sky's previous two games had started. On Saturday against the Fever, the Sky were tied at 2-2 with 8:59 to play but were down by 10 less than five minutes later on their way to a 79-52 blowout. Advertisement It was worse against the Liberty in the Sky's next game, an 85-66 romp. Chicago trailed, 12-0, with 5:49 to go in the first period before the team even managed a point. The Sky's last lead came when they beat Dallas, 94-83, on May 31. The good news for Chicago was that, heading into halftime in Atlanta, despite a late push from the Dream, the Sky still held the lead, 39-38, behind eight points each from frontcourt sophomores Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese. WNBA Turns Heads With Paige Bueckers Message on Friday

WNBA Turns Heads With Paige Bueckers Message on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Even after ending her record-setting career at UConn, No. 1 overall pick Paige Bueckers still has a learning curve in the WNBA. Advertisement Ahead of Friday's matchup between the Dallas Wings and Las Vegas Aces in the WNBA Commissioner's Cup, the league shared a video on X of Bueckers talking about what she's learned so far through a month in the league. Bueckers said there's been a lot to pore over as she learns a new system with the Wings. "Learned a lot, I think there's a lot of new terminology through the system that we have that has been very new and I'm trying to process it all and get all the terms right," she said. Bueckers added that some of the concepts are the same as what she learned in her time at UConn, but the physicality in the WNBA is on another level. Advertisement "You have stuff that you used before, but now there's new terminology here in the W, and then the pace and physicality is something that I'm learning every day," Bueckers said. This season has been a struggle for the Wings, dropping to 1-10 after a loss to the Phoenix Mercury. Bueckers said afterward that she believes her team is setting the right culture and believes the success will follow. "It's challenging but very rewarding in a sense of you being super process-oriented and not result-oriented," Bueckers said. "How we want to have a set of standards, build a culture and have a way we do things and stick to that regardless of wins or losses. "... Then the results will follow and will come as we continue to stay disciplined in who we are every single day."
