Porter's standout career earns Player of the Year nomination
RAPID CITY, S.D. (KELO) — Our fifth and final nominee for girls basketball Player of the Year is Rapid City Stevens standout, Taaliyah Porter. Taalyiah began playing basketball in second grade, sparking a passion for the game at a young age. 'I started playing at the Y and then my dad ended up making a travel team,' Porter said. 'That was basically what our weekends were filled with. Traveling is where I built my community and where I found that basketball balanced me out.' Porter began playing varsity as an eighth grader and in her freshman year, found her way into the starting lineup. Now, the four year starter leaves Rapid City Stevens as one of the most decorated players in program history. 'She's been a staple of our program. She's tough, she's super skilled, her fundamentals,' Rapid City Stevens head coach Adam Dannenbring said. Taaliyah became the program's all-time leading scorer this season. She has scored 1,667 career points, surpassing South Dakota icon and current WNBA coach, Becky Hammon. 'It's just an outstanding acheivement. That record last for 30 years and for her to break that was a pretty special thing,' Dannenbring said. 'I never realized or dreamed of actually doing that before in my life,' Porter said. 'As soon as the points kept getting closer in the moment, just leading up to it, it was exciting. Me like beating her, was a cool and great experience.' Porter averaged more than 22 points per game, leading her team to the state tournament, and also earning a nomination for Player of the Year. 'All of my hard work is paying off and I'm getting recognized for all the things that I'm going through,' Porter said. 'Looking back on it, I just never thought I could do it. It's pretty amazing.' Porter surpassed Hammon's record in a loss to O'Gorman on February 7th. Sydney Terveen develops into leader for O'Gorman girls
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The O'Gorman girls claimed a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Brandon Valley 47-46 in the state championship. The Knights were fueled by junior Sydney Terveen, helping her to be named a Player of the Year Finalist. Terveen does it all for O'Gorman. The junior averages 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals each game. 'Her ability to full court pressure, she'd so good in transition,' O'Gorman head coach Kent Kulsrud said. 'Great defensive player, so active with her hands, just has the ability to score in mutiple different ways. So, fabulous career to this point and is so excited to have her back for her senior year.' Terveen logged 52 total points in their three state tournament games, including a game high 21 of O'Gorman's 47 total points in the title game. 'She just stepped up and made huge plays for us all season and certainly in the state championship this year, as well as last year,' O'Gorman head coach Kent Kulsrud said. 'She was huge, stepping up and making big plays, making big shots, just doing the things that, really, really good basketball players needed to be successful to win championships.' Throughout the season it's been coach Kulsrud pouring into Terveen's winning mentality. 'Kulsrud would tell us, 'oh go 1-0 tonight', so I feel like that pushes us to do our best,' O'Gorman junior guard Sydney Terveen said. The championship game at half time we were down and then Kolsrud gave us a little motivational speech and just do it for the seniors. I feel like that really gave us the motivation to push through and finish strong.' Terveen continues to find ways to improve, helping her to be named a Player of the Year finalist. 'I try to be more vocal and I'm still trying to do that, and I'll go home and shoot and just trying to make myself better to bring it back to practice and make the team better too,' the junior guard said. She was the top scorer for the Knights squad logging 371 points this season. And we'll continue to unveil our Player of the Year finalists one day at a time. The winners will be unveiled in our Player of the Year Show on Saturday, April 26. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
