Sydney Terveen develops into leader for O'Gorman girls

Yahoo15-04-2025

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The O'Gorman girls claimed a thrilling come-from-behind victory over Brandon Valley 47-46 in the state championship. The Knights were fueled by junior Sydney Terveen, helping her to be named a Player of the Year Finalist.
Terveen does it all for O'Gorman. The junior averages 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals each game.
'Her ability to full court pressure, she'd so good in transition,' O'Gorman head coach Kent Kulsrud said. 'Great defensive player, so active with her hands, just has the ability to score in mutiple different ways. So, fabulous career to this point and is so excited to have her back for her senior year.'
Terveen logged 52 total points in their three state tournament games, including a game high 21 of O'Gorman's 47 total points in the title game.
'She just stepped up and made huge plays for us all season and certainly in the state championship this year, as well as last year,' O'Gorman head coach Kent Kulsrud said. 'She was huge, stepping up and making big plays, making big shots, just doing the things that, really, really good basketball players needed to be successful to win championships.'
Throughout the season it's been coach Kulsrud pouring into Terveen's winning mentality.
'Kulsrud would tell us, 'oh go 1-0 tonight', so I feel like that pushes us to do our best,' O'Gorman junior guard Sydney Terveen said. The championship game at half time we were down and then Kolsrud gave us a little motivational speech and just do it for the seniors. I feel like that really gave us the motivation to push through and finish strong.'
Terveen continues to find ways to improve, helping her to be named a Player of the Year finalist.
'I try to be more vocal and I'm still trying to do that, and I'll go home and shoot and just trying to make myself better to bring it back to practice and make the team better too,' the junior guard said.
She was the top scorer for the Knights squad logging 371 points this season. And we'll continue to unveil our Player of the Year finalists one day at a time. The winners will be unveiled in our Player of the Year Show on Saturday, April 26.

Roosters win as Radley suffers another head knock

James Tedesco has inspired a 12-8 defeat of Newcastle, but his Sydney Roosters have cause for concern after Victor Radley suffered the latest in a long list of head knocks. Hard-nosed forward Radley suffered his second game-ending head knock of the season attempting to tackle Fletcher Hunt in Saturday night's win in Newcastle. Radley has one of the most extensive concussion histories in the NRL, estimated to have gone down with seven game-ending head knocks in the past four seasons. He will miss at least next week's clash against North Queensland, but the Roosters have traditionally taken a conservative approach to players with a track record of concussions. Watch all the highlights as the Knights take on the Roosters in Round 15!#NRLKnightsRoosters — NRL (@NRL) June 14, 2025 Errors meant the Roosters struggled for any kind of ascendancy in the first half, trailing 6-0 after Newcastle's Jack Cogger put Kyle McCarthy over on the back of a Dylan Lucas break. But Tedesco stepped up in the second half and proved the difference between the two sides, missing a combined total of 17 players to injury, suspension and State of Origin duties. At the 50-metre line, Tedesco broke through Kai Pearce-Paul and Jackson Hastings - playing his first game of the year - and reached around to find Salesi Foketi. The up-and-coming forward grabbed Tedesco's one-handed offload and tore past Hunt and through James Schiller's tackle to score his first NRL try. The try came the set after right winger Schiller went within inches of giving the Knights a three-score lead, only to drop the ball over the try-line. A profane chant rang out from the Knights' home crowd after the Roosters' ultimately game-winning try, again set up by Tedesco. The fullback put a grubber kick through the line and Siua Wong was ruled to have grounded the ball with his forearm. Dom Young was seen embracing Roosters teammates at full-time of what was likely to be his final game for the club. Right winger Young looked likeliest for the Roosters in the first half and is set to rejoin the Knights mid-season, possibly in time to face the Dolphins next week. Out-of-favour Hastings was solid without having any moments of brilliance playing five-eighth in his first game for the injury-stricken Knights since July last year. He looked particularly dangerous linking with Pearce-Paul on the right side. But Hastings found himself caught with the ball on the fifth tackle inside the red zone in the second half, one of many times the Knights failed to capitalise on their many chances.

Flashback Friday: Racing on the Big Sioux

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) —It's beginning to feel like Summer around much of KELOLAND this week with our temperatures hitting the eighties almost daily. The heat will have many families hitting the water this weekend in a number of ways. In this week's Flashback Friday, Bobbi Lower takes us back to 1982 for some friendly competition between boaters on the Big Sioux River. The river proved to be a bit easier for the canoeist than those on rafts. Even the best of the bunch had to get off and push part of the way. 'Yeah there was right at the beginning and every place after that we were kind of lucky ours went over the top so we could just paddle along.' While the participants in some regattas trained for months before the race, most of the big Sioux contestants were lucky if they got together the day before. 'Spent probably four and a half minutes at the other end and that was it.''A lot of Practice huh?''We did it last year, we thought we were still in shape.''Were ya?''Pretty fair, pretty fair.' Although the race seems simple enough its hard work.'Well yeah it looks easier on the side of the bank, from their viewpoint I'm sure it is.''What's so hard about it?''Well mostly pace yourself and you usually pace yourself for about half a mile and it ends up to be three.' The Egge's pacing must not have been too far off, they came in first. They say the secret is a fast raft, good crew, and a desire to win. Bobbi Lower, KELOLAND News. Liverpool agree record £116m fee for Leverkusen and Germany star Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have agreed to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial £100m, potentially rising to £116m. The German will become their new club record signing and, if add-ons are triggered, will become the most expensive buy an English club has made, topping the £115m Chelsea committed to Moises Caicedo. Advertisement Wirtz, who had made it clear his preference was to join Liverpool, is set to have a medical next week and is expected to agree personal terms with the English champions. Sign up here now The playmaker had also attracted interest from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City but was persuaded by Liverpool's vision for him and rejected more lucrative offers because of his desire to move to Anfield. But Leverkusen had wanted €150m (£126m), and the two clubs have been in talks. Liverpool had made two previous bids for Wirtz, offering £109m last week before striking an agreement. Wirtz was an integral part of Leverkusen's Bundesliga win in 2023/24 (Getty) His arrival will smash their club record, with Virgil van Dijk costing £75m and Darwin Nunez £64m, rising to a potential £85m, but a bigger deal was made possible by Liverpool's prudence last summer, when they only bought Federico Chiesa and Giorgi Mamardashvili and made a transfer-market profit. Advertisement Liverpool have shown a willingness to spend heavily on players who they believe are world class in their positions and transformative for the team, with Van Dijk and the £65m goalkeeper Alisson previous examples. Wirtz, who has scored 34 goals in his last two seasons, was named the Bundesliga's Player of the Year in 2023-24 when he helped Leverkusen win their first league title, plus the German Cup, while they also reached the Europa League final. Liverpool have already made one signing from Leverkusen this summer, bringing in right-back Jeremie Frimpong for £30m. They are also interested in left-back Milos Kerkez, with Bournemouth valuing the Hungary international at £45m. Advertisement Wirtz's arrival could lead to Harvey Elliott leaving with Liverpool, who have a self-sustaining model, conscious that sales can help them afford to buy.
