A composed performance from the 2022 semi-finalists sees them set for the top four again after dispatching Tahiti 3-1.
While Tahiti came into today's first Group A game as the only unbeaten side in the group, being yet to win a game meant that only victory would be enough to secure progression to the semi-finals. For Samoa, meanwhile, just a point was required to make the tournament's top four.
Oteta Kitiona was pulling the strings from midfield for Samoa, teeing up Lilly Dowling for an early warning shot before setting up an early penalty, as she played in Malia Jessop who was then brought down by Vateanui Deane. Ariana Skeers stepped up to coolly convert the resulting penalty and secure an early lead for Samoa.
Kitiona turned goalscorer 12 minutes later after a quick counterattack. Dowling put a tantalizing cross into the Tahitian penalty to Kitiona's feet, initially miscued her shot, but quickly recovered to slot past Camille Andre and double her side's advantage.
Tahiti weren't going down without a fight though, forcing their way back into the game through Tauhere Teore, catching Samoa out after Breanna Kitiona's backpass to Salanoa and Teore spied an opportunity to force the error, pressing the goalkeeper to turn over possession and poke the ball home into the empty net, restoring Tahitian hope as the sides went into half time.
The second half was a more controlled affair, with both sides conscious that any mistakes could change the trajectory of their tournament.
Jessop put the game beyond doubt on the stroke of the second half cooling break. Receiving the ball in midfield, she took advantage of the retreating Tahitian defence to unleash a rocket of a shot that Andre could only get a hand to.
Samoa must now wait for the result of the second Group A game of the day, Cook Islands vs Papua New Guinea, to determine whether they go through to the semi-finals as runners up or group winners.

Papua New Guinea Top Group A With Demolition Of Cook Islands

With the return of Marie Kaipu to the starting XI and the focal point to their attack restored, the reigning OFC Women's Nations Cup champions would have been keen to end the group stage with a statement performance against the Cook Islands. It perhaps shouldn't have come as a surprise to see Kaipu and captain Ramona Padio at the heart of PNG taking an early lead. Padio crossed to Kaipu in the box, and the number nine shot at Courtney Napa who couldn't hold it. Michaelyne Butubu was on hand to head the rebound into the Cook Islands net. Kaipu doubled the lead five minutes later with a typically composed finish after being played in by Padio and outpacing her marking centreback. Phylis Pala added a third with a low drilled shot from distance, and a minute later Keren Kalapai got her name on the scoresheet with a sharp turn and finish. Kaipu netted a second brilliant goal just after the half hour mark, using her pace to intercept the ball before it got to an outstretched diving Cook Islands goalkeeper Courtney Napa, and showing some precise footwork to keep the ball in play before picking her spot in the net. She got her hat trick in the 39th minute, rewarded for pressing Napa with the ricochet nestling in the bottom corner. PNG picked up where they left off in the second half, setting up camp in the Cook Islands' half. Padio got her name on the scoresheet next with a driven shot from outside the penalty area, the ball crashing over the line off the crossbar just before the hour mark. Kalapai got her second goal of the game in the 70th minute, taking advantage of a mistake from Napa to complete her brace. Papua New Guinea's win sees them through to the semi-finals top of Group A, and they will play the Group B runners up.

Sonny Bill's greatest hits

Sonny Bill Williams v Scott Lewis, Boxing, Gold Coast, Australia. 29 January 2011. Photo: © Photosport Ltd 2011 Sonny Bill Williams has evoked fear in his opponents both on the field and in the ring. The sporting superstar possess ungodly power in both his hands and shoulders, and has left a trail of destruction across multiple arenas. With William's set to settle his most personal and bitter feud against Paul Gallen, RNZ looks back at some of SBW's most brutal moments on both the pitch and canvas. 1. Reckless Rabbitoh gets wrecked 2003 S.G. Ball Cup Junior Bulldogs vs Junior Rabbitohs A violent affair in Sydney, a young SBW found himself sent to the sideline for punching when he was pursued by the man he had just laid a three piece combo on. Embarrassingly, the player removed his jersey as he charged towards SBW, only for the Samoan-Kiwi to drop him with a single shot to the chops. 2. Making a meme out of Clinton 2004 NRL preliminary final Bulldogs vs Panthers Relentlessly replayed for over a decade, an iconic hit which sent Joel Clinton's head rocking backward, the flying sweat in slow mo adding to the drama of the collision. 3. A grand slam 2004 NRL grand final Bulldogs vs Roosters On the biggest stage, SBW let Chris Flannery know in emphatic fashion, that this was going to be the Bulldogs night, as Williams launched into the Rooster and buried him into the dirt. 4. A devestating debut 2009 TKO win vs Gary Gurr William's much hyped foray into boxing, and it didn't take long for him to leave a mark. Unfortunately for Gary Gurr, it was on flush his jaw. With just 40 second remaining in round two, Williams unloaded a vicious right uppercut which had Gurr out on feet and SBW's in ring credentials were established. 5. Felling the hulking Hogan 2010 TKO win vs Ryan Hogan. Giving away almost 20kg, SBW's opponent resembled more of a professional beer drinker than a boxer, and his poor conditioning was quickly exploited by the far slicker SBW, ending the bout after just two minutes 30 seconds with a savage right hook. A merciless mitt to the mush 2010 Ranfurly Shield Canterbury vs Southland Adding the log o' wood to his long list of accolades, Williams absolutely sat down poor Matt Saunders in one of the most brutal don't argues you'll ever see. 7. Retiring Tillman 2012 TKO win vs Clarence Tillman Once again, it was done in one, Williams comprehensively outclassing the American, a left uppercut sending him stumbling and swinging wildly. Williams was calculated in his assault, a right hook to the temple as Tillman flayed on the ropes mercifully ending the one side beatdown. 8. Picking the wrong fight 2012 Super Rugby Chiefs vs Highlanders Clearly not seeing the previous entry, three Highlanders decided to take on the then New Zealand Heavyweight boxing champion, who warned them in no uncertain terms not to try their luck again. 9. Conrad gets crunched 2015 Super Rugby Chiefs vs Hurricanes Perhaps a tad bitter that the legendary centre kept him out of the All Blacks starting lineup, SBW levelled New Zealand teammate Conrad Smith with an absolute bone rattler. 10. Beating up bully-boy Barry 2022 KO win vs Barry Hall Arh karma. Years of running his mouth and picking on smaller men on the footy field finally caught up to Barry Hall, as SBW obliterated AFL enforcer inside the first round. The most ruthless finish of his boxing career. Sonny Bill Williams wins the 'Turf War' Heavyweight bout between Sonny Bill Williams and Barry Hall at the Aware Super Theatre in Sydney, Wednesday, March 23, 2022. Photo: AAP /
