Over 300 students and faculty of colleges in the city participated in a special programme to observe International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking organised by the Department of Psychiatry, K.A.P.V. Government Medical College in association with the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital, on Thursday.
The activities included a rally from the Collector's office to the medical college auditorium, and awareness lectures for students, centred on this year's theme 'Breaking the Chains! Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All'.
Tiruchi District Collector V. Saravanan administered an oath against the use of narcotics and other addictive substances to the gathering and flagged off the rally. S. Kumaravel, Dean, K.A.P.V. Government Medical College, likened addiction to a whirlpool that could pull people in without their knowledge.
'We have to learn to say 'no' to drugs. The brain is the main generator of all ideas and can be trained to stay balanced. Beyond substance abuse, we are facing a major challenge with addiction to chewing tobacco, electronic devices, and internet overuse,' he said.
MGMGH medical superintendent Udhaya Aruna urged the students to stay alert for behavioural changes among their peers and advised them to seek medical attention at the earliest.
A. Niranjana Devi, professor, Department of Psychiatry, spoke.

Nagaland observes int'l day against drug abuse

Dimapur: The International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking was observed across districts in Nagaland on Thursday. The observance brought together stakeholders from medical institutions, law enforcement, NGOs, legal bodies and the wider community, reflecting a shared commitment to address addiction through prevention, treatment and recovery. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Kohima District Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Committee observed the day with the theme 'Breaking the Chain: Prevention, Treatment, Recovery for All' at the Nagaland Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) auditorium. The programme was organised by the Kohima district administration in collaboration with Project REST, NHAK. Speaking at the event, Kohima DC B Henok Buchem emphasised the urgent need to strike a balance between rehabilitative and punitive approaches in tackling substance abuse. "While we must empower medical professionals and organisations to continue healing and reintegration efforts, law enforcement must simultaneously strengthen its crackdown on drug trafficking. Both are necessary, the carrot and the stick," he said. He acknowledged the growing concern that over 90 per cent of drug users are young people. He emphasised the importance of a balanced approach in Nagaland — combining strong law enforcement to curb supply with robust rehabilitation and reintegration support for those affected. Buchem called on all stakeholders, medical professionals, law enforcement, NGOs, educators and families, to work together in strengthening both the 'carrot' and the 'stick' aspects of the response. "Our response must be tailored to our unique social and cultural context. Healing cannot happen without enforcement, and enforcement without support leads nowhere," he said. The day was also observed in Niuland, Meluri, Tseminyu, Tuensang, Mon and Mokokchung.

Children should become frontline fighters against drug abuse, says CM

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the addiction to drugs was a deadly scourge that destroys wisdom, friendship, and knowledge. He was speaking after inaugurating the State-level anti-drug campaign implemented by the Department of General Education at Cotton Hill Higher Secondary School in Thiruvananthapuram on Thursday. The action plan to be implemented against drug abuse in all schools in the State was launched on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Children should become the frontline fighters against drug abuse, he said. The State government has put in place many measures against drug abuse that students are unaware of. The action plan has been formulated taking note of this and to address this lacuna. Teachers are responsible for creating awareness and exploring the possibilities of dissuading the students from drug addiction. For this purpose, special training programs are also being provided to teachers, said the Chief Minister. Parents should also play a major role in ensuring that their children do not fall into the trap of addiction. They should spend more time with their children and interact with them in a healthy way along with monitoring their changes. Since not all parents may be equally capable of this, special training will be provided for parents to empower them, said the Chief Minister. The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has prepared a special book to help maintain a healthy lifestyle for children. A Prahari Club has been formed to monitor drug-related activities. Further, the Jagratha Brigade, comprising 30 to 50 students from selected schools, is coordinating anti-drug activities. Community discussions against drugs will also be organised. Complaints received through this platform will be addressed once a week under the leadership of the head teachers. The General Education department has designed this year's action plan beginning on International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit ending on January 30, 2026. The Chief Minister also requested teachers, parents, and the general public to participate in this action plan along with students to bring about a change
