CPI(M) demands action to address critical staff shortage, infrastructure deficiencies at MGMGH
Members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) submitted a petition to the Tiruchi District Collector on Monday, urging immediate action to address critical shortages and infrastructure deficiencies at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH). The petition was accompanied by signatures collected from the public over a month-long campaign. The memorandum was presented during the public grievance redress meeting held at the Collectorate, presided over by Collector V. Saravanan. CPI(M) State Control Committee member S. Sridhar and City District Secretary Govi Vetri Selvam, who led the delegation, stated that MGMGH serves as the primary healthcare destination for patients from Tiruchi and surrounding districts, especially the poor and marginalised. Pointing to staff shortages across various categories — including doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel — the petition highlighted that several sanctioned posts remain vacant. This staffing gap, particularly during night and emergency shifts, has severely impacted patient care. The petition underscored recurring shortages of clean drinking water and inadequate sanitation facilities, all of which had contributed to growing patient hardship. Several district and ward committee members were present during the submission of the petition.

Rs 110-crore MGMGH speciality block in Tiruchy to be completed by November
TIRUCHY: Work on the Rs 110-crore speciality block being constructed inside the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) campus is expected to be completed by November. Chief Minister MK Stalin is likely to inaugurate the new facility in December. The project, launched in March 2024 , is coming up on a 2,600 square metres as a ground-plus-six-floor structure. The block will house 600 beds and bring together key departments such as general medicine, surgery, dermatology, and a centralised blood bank under one roof. "All structural work has been completed. Interior finishing, tiling, waterproofing, and electrical systems are now in progress," a senior PWD engineer who is supervising the work told TNIE, adding work is progressing as per schedule. A senior DMK functionary close to Minister KN Nehru said the project is being closely monitored to meet the deadline, he said, "This is a priority for us not just because of the elections, but because Tiruchy serves a large rural and urban population. The Chief Minister may inaugurate it in December." The government may project this a major health care upgrade ahead of 2026 Assembly elections, party sources said. Once operational, the block will decongest existing facilities. Health Department officials said the outpatient section will be relocated to the ground and first floors of the new building. "The integrated facility will improve inter-department coordination and reduce delays in diagnostics and referrals," a senior Health Department official said. Beyond clinical care, the hospital administration plans to level and create space around the new block to accommodate several hundreds of vehicles. At present, vehicles are parked haphazardly in the sprawling campus often resulting in chaos. Further, to manage the increase in patient footfalls, hospital authorities have sent a request to the government to appoint at least 100 additional staff nurses, supplementing the current strength of 212. "We are in need of more staffs. In proportionate with the beds we have sought staffs. Apart from us, Nurses association have also given representation," said Dean S Kumaravel. An additional Rs 24 crore has been sanctioned for procurement of equipment and surgical instruments for various departments, sources said.

MGMGH & KAPV Medical College set for much-needed revamp at Rs4.05cr
Trichy: MGMGH and KAPV Medical College in Trichy are set to get a makeover, with funds to the tune of 4.05 crore sanctioned for maintenance and renovation works that for long have been put on the backburner. Officials said 2.05 crore has been allocated from the CMCHIS corpus fund, which will also cover maintenance work on the GH premises. Although the funds have been sanctioned, they are yet to reach the hands of authorities in Trichy. The public works department (PWD) will carry out the work once the funds are received. Sources said the maintenance works will include upgrading to an underground drainage system, addressing seepage through walls, repairing or replacing ill-maintained or unusable doors, resolving water stagnation issues around the building, and replacing damaged electrical wiring. "We are to identify the vulnerable places first and then fix all of them. We have also sought more funds than what has been sanctioned now," an official told TOI. However, officials did not confirm whether the funds would be used to address the long-standing issue of the two non-functional lifts in the super-specialty block. Meanwhile, at the KAPV Medical College campus in Milaguparai, all six hostels for undergraduate students and four for postgraduate students will undergo a makeover, with 2 crore sanctioned from the NHM. Sources said no major maintenance work has been carried out in any of the campus buildings in the past decade. "All of these hostels are old structures, some of them decades old, with deteriorating amenities. The toilets are in poor condition, the rooms lack many basic facilities, and the infrastructure is outdated. Though there will be no new buildings, the funds will be used to revamp the hostels — from renovating washrooms and living spaces to improving plumbing, electrical systems, and other essential infrastructure," a senior official from the college said. More than 2,000 students study at the college, most of whom are residents. Apart from the hostel maintenance on the 28-year-old campus, the auditorium, which is in a dilapidated and outdated state, will also be revamped. Additionally, lecture halls will be renovated, officials informed, telling that it will be done with the help of corpus funds. BOX: Total funds sanctioned: Rs4.05 crore MGMGH & GH premises Renovation Works (To be executed by PWD): Upgrade underground drainage system Fix seepage in walls Repair/replace broken doors Resolve water stagnation around buildings Replace damaged electrical wiring Vulnerable areas to be identified first KAPV: Hostel Renovation (10 hostels – 6 UG, 4 PG) Toilet renovations Room refurbishments Plumbing improvements Electrical upgrades No new buildings – focus on existing structures Other Upgrades: ● Auditorium revamp (outdated & dilapidated) ● Lecture halls to be renovated

MGMGH library in Tiruchy gives healthy dose of knowledge to all
TIRUCHY: What was once an empty corner at the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (MGMGH) now draws a steady crowd of doctors, students and attendants alike, thanks to the library that was set up at the spot last month. With newspapers and magazines, and a patch of peace on offer, the newly set-up facility has become an unlikely but welcome morning ritual for many nowadays. While the library inaugurated by Chief Minister MK Stalin via videoconferencing on June 10 failed to find takers for the first few weeks, the facility now is attracting over 60 visitors daily. They include those who come exclusively to read, say authorities. 'We didn't expect such a response,' says A Dhrama who heads the libraries in Puthur region. Librarian P Pradeepa. who is employed with the Directorate of Public Libraries, said, 'Doctors, students, drivers, and even people waiting with patients have made this a regular stop, especially in the mornings.' The library currently offers five dailies in English and Tamil, besides three Tamil magazines. While the collection is modest, visitors vouch for the mood the set-up creates. A UG student said she and others often visit the spot before duty. "We have a college library, but this is more relaxed. We skim the papers and unwind a bit before the day begins," she adds. P Selvaraj, who has been attending to his wife at the hospital for a week, says he now makes it a habit to stop by at the library every morning. "I read the papers regularly at home. Finding this space has made the wait less burdensome," he shares. D Ranjith Kumar of Woraiyur expressed surprised at such a facility. "It's a gem inside a hospital," he says. S Vijaya of Srirangam, an orthopaedic patient, visits the facility thrice a week. "It makes the long hours feel lighter," she adds. "A government hospital can be overwhelming not just for patients, but also for their families and even healthcare staff," said S Kumaravel, Dean, KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College, Tiruchy. "Having a quiet reading space like this offers a brief mental break and brings a sense of normalcy in a high-pressure environment," he added. Meanwhile, visitors request drinking water facility and faster plumbing fixes for restrooms. Hospital officials propose adding introductory medical books to the current collection.
