Police seek search warrant for HYBE chairman Bang Si-hyuk over alleged stock fraud
The warrant application was submitted on July 17 by the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, targeting both Bang and HYBE's headquarters in Yongsan-gu, according to a Chosun Biz report.
Bang is suspected of misleading existing investors, including venture capitalists, about delays in HYBE's IPO plans before its 2019 listing.
He also allegedly facilitated the sale of HYBE executive shares to a special purpose company created by a private equity fund they had set up.
'The prosecution is reportedly reviewing whether to request the search warrant submitted by the police,' the report said.
Police have also asked to transfer the case to avoid overlapping investigations, as prosecutors are already handling a related complaint.
The prosecution received the complaint on July 18 from financial authorities and assigned the case to the Financial and Securities Crime Joint Investigation Unit of the Seoul Southern District Prosecutors' Office.
In early July, Bang was questioned by police and financial regulators over allegations tied to undisclosed earn-out contracts ahead of HYBE's IPO, with the Financial Services Commission later filing a criminal complaint.
HYBE has said it informed investors and pledged full cooperation with authorities.

CYBERJAYA, Aug 17 — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) revealed yesterday Johor Regent, Tunku Mahkota Ismail had provided information that assisted the investigations under Op Sohor, which are currently still ongoing. Its chief commissioner, Tan Sri Azam Baki said the Regent also wanted to curb smuggling at the country's borders. 'I would like to inform that His Royal Highness Tunku Mahkota Johor as Regent of Johor, has been very cooperative in this matter and wants such activities to be curbed,' he told the media after the close of the Anti-Corruption Graduates Convention (Komawar) here yesterday, adding that the syndicate is believed to be focused only in the southern region of the country with no new arrests being made. 'I expect so far there has been no (new arrests), if there are any links, (for instance) when we look into money laundering it might be possible there are other parties benefitting from this activity, and if so, we will investigate further,' he said. He also said that the commission was looking into the reasons behind the existence of the online media company that two of the suspects arrested under Op Sohor were working for and confirmed that both suspects were not from any mainstream media. 'They work for a company, which name I can't reveal, and we're looking into why it was set up,' Azam said, adding that they believed that both the suspects acted as enablers by leaking information to the syndicate. The MACC had arrested five senior armed forces officers on Wednesday for allegedly leaking military operation information to smugglers and colluding with a syndicate to smuggle in contraband, including drugs and cigarettes, estimated to be worth RM5 million a month. Meanwhile, Azam said during his speech at the close of Komawar that it was organised not only to provide exposure and education on corruption and integrity but to instil values and build character among university students. Lawmakers pass RM492bil budget to aid economy
THE lower house of parliament has passed a 3.78 trillion baht (RM492bil) annual budget, needed to support a fragile economy that's at risk from issues ranging from the impact of higher US tariffs to a downturn in tourism. The budget Bill for the year starting Oct 1 was backed by 257 lawmakers in the 500-member House of Representatives late Friday, following a three-day debate. A total of 229 members opposed the spending plan. The vote will be a relief to investors in the South-East Asian nation, by avoiding a repeat of the months-long deadlock over spending plans seen in 2019. The country faces a litany of problems, including political instability linked to the suspension of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, continued tensions with Cambodia which recently erupted into violent clashes, and a stiff 19% tariff on shipments to the US, Thailand's biggest export destination. Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira thanked the House for approving the budget and said the government will ensure the spending is efficient, transparent and delivers maximum benefit to the people. 'I would like to assure that the policies, measures and budget approved will be implemented in accordance with the designated objectives and plans,' Pichai said in a post on X. The government has defended a marginal increase in spending for the year starting October and a projected budget deficit of 860 billion baht (RM112bil), or 4.3% of the gross domestic product. Officials say the outlays are necessary given the increased risks to the economy from global trade uncertainties. The Senate will review the budget on Aug 25-26, but analysts expect the spending plan to take effect on Oct 1 as planned. TVET being strengthened to meet industrial sector's needs, says Meradong rep

SIBU (Aug 17): The Ministry of Human Resources has developed the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Admission Unit System as the main channel for TVET course intake across Malaysia, with two methods of student enrolment. Meradong assemblyman Datuk Ding Kuong Hiing said the two methods are 'Premier Intake' and 'Lifelong Intake'. 'TVET opens up opportunities for students to further their studies in skills-based fields, with the government providing training and strengthening TVET to equip them with multi-tasking skills in line with labour market demands, particularly to meet the needs of the nation's industrial sector. 'As of Dec 31, 2024, there are 1,345 TVET institutions in Malaysia, covering over 1,200 public institutions under 12 ministries, 23 state government institutions and 652 private institutions. 'Enrolment into TVET programmes increased from 166,577 in 2022 to 212,022 in 2024, while overall enrolment rose from 394,976 in 2022 to 436,285 in 2024,' he said when officiating the Education Office Expo and Open Day 2025 in Meradong yesterday. The programme was organised by the Meradong District Education Office. According to him, the latest graduate employability rate has reached 94.5 per cent under the 13th Malaysia Plan. 'Currently, the government is actively developing TVET by emphasising the people's wellbeing, income growth, education and development while also strengthening strategic collaboration between TVET institutions and industries to enhance skills and technological knowledge. 'Through this opportunity, we urge all students and former students to register for MyDigital ID as a digital identity verification.
