'Fresh Hope': Karthi Selvam Hopes Euro Tour Will Open The Doors For India Comeback
Tamil Nadu's Karthi Selvam hopes to rejoin the senior India men's hockey squad after gaining experience on the India 'A' tour of Europe.
Tamil Nadu forward Karthi Selvam is optimistic about earning a recall to the Senior India men's hockey squad after gaining valuable experience on the recent India 'A' tour of Europe. He believes this tour has significantly boosted his chances of wearing national colours again.
Karthi, who last represented the senior India side at the Asian Champions Trophy in Chennai in 2023, mentioned that the exposure and specific inputs from the coaching staff have renewed his confidence in pushing for a place in the core group.
'The recent India 'A' tour to Europe has instilled fresh hope for India comeback for me," Karthi stated in a Hockey India release.
'It's going to be two years since I last wore the India colours, and there've been a lot of learnings for me on this tour, which had a mix of young players and experienced ones," he added.
The India 'A' squad has now returned to the SAI centre in Bengaluru, where they will train alongside the senior core group and contend for selection for the upcoming Australia tour and the Asia Cup in Rajgir, Bihar next month.
Karthi's return to the probables was prompted by a strong performance for Tamil Nadu Dragons in the revamped Hockey India League earlier this year, which impressed the selectors enough to include him in the national camp and the development squad under coach and former India striker Shivendra Singh.
The India 'A' side started the tour brightly with back-to-back wins over Ireland (6-1 and 6-0), and a win and a loss against France (3-2 and 0-2). They narrowly lost to England (2-3), before being defeated by Belgium (1-3) and the Netherlands (0-3 and 2-8).
'We started the tour very well, and the match against England was also quite close. However, we couldn't finish the tour on a high note, with the Netherlands posing stiff competition. Overall, it was a top experience for us," he said.
The young forward credited the coaching team for helping him refine his game, particularly with off-the-ball tactics.
'There have been some specific inputs that Craig (Fulton) has given me, and also Cosma, our Analytical Coach, has provided valuable insights for my game, particularly on off-the-ball tactics. I've been implementing this in my game and look forward to breaking into the India side again," Karthi said.
Karthi acknowledges the challenges ahead.
'There is still a lot of hard work to do. There is a fine difference between how the senior team performs and how we have fared as a development team. There are some gaps that we need to work on, and that will be our focus in this camp," he concluded.

Shubman Gill Equals Gary Sobers Test Record, Needs 1 Run To...
Last Updated: Shubman Gill has proven his credentials in Test cricket with a memorable show on India's ongoing tour of England. India captain Shubman Gill is in the midst of a breakthrough series of his Test career that has seen him score truckload of runs. In his debut series as India Test captain, Gill has stepped up his game with four centuries from eight innings including a magnificent double ton against England. With a Test still remaining in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Gill can create several records. The 25-year-old on Sunday, scored a memorable hundred which was pivotal to India securing a hard-fought draw in Manchester after playing catchup for the majority of the match. He scored 103 off 238 and stitched a 188-run partnership with KL Rahul (90) to help the visitors recover from 0/2 after England had taken a huge 311-run lead. Gill thus drew level with the legendary Gary Sobers' 59-year-old record for the most runs scored by a visiting captain during a series in SENA countries. Sobers scored 722 from eight innings of five Tests during West Indies' 1966 tour of England. The legendary allrounder scored three centuries and two fifties on the tour. Gill has so far made 722 runs from eight innings of four Tests and needs 1 run to go past Sobers record. Most runs by a visiting captain in a series in SENA countries Overall, the record for the most runs in a single series by a captain is held by legendary Don Bradman of Australia who racked up 810 runs in 9 innings of a five-Test series against England at home in 1936-37. Gill is joint-third in this list. Gill's Sensational Show Prior to the start of England tour, there questions were raised over Gill's middling record in Test cricket. All five of his Test centuries before leaving for England came at home. The youngster has addressed the criticism with aplomb peeling four centuries with his overall Test average now in the early fourties. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Sourav Ganguly supports India–Pakistan match at Asia Cup 2025: ‘Pahalgam should not happen but…'
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has come out in support of the India-Pakistan clash at the Asia Cup. Ganguly — who has also previously served as BCCI president — stated that while India must take a strong stance against terrorism, sport must continue. Speaking to news agency ANI, Ganguly said, 'I am okay. The sport must go on. At the same time, Pahalgam should not happen, but the sport must go on. Terrorism must not happen; it needs to be stopped. India took a strong stance towards terrorism... Sport needs to be played.' The tournament is all set to begin on 9 September and will end with the final on 28 September. While India are the official hosts of the Asia Cup, the T20 event will be held in the UAE as part of the agreement between India and Pakistan to play their multilateral matches at neutral venues. India and Pakistan are in the same group at the Asia Cup along with UAE and Oman. Meanwhile, Group B consists of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong. The two teams being in the same group means they will clash at least twice in the tournament — once in the group stage and again in the Super 4s. A third face-off is also possible if both teams qualify for the final. Notably, the decision to play between India and Pakistan at the Asia Cup came shortly after a World Championship of Legends match between India Champions and Pakistan Champions was called off after some India players refused to participate in the contest. Former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan had also posted a public statement on why he would not feature in the contest, stating, "Jo kadam 11 May ko liya, uspe aaj bhi waise hi khada hoon. Mera desh mere liye sab kuch hai, aur desh se badhkar kuch nahi hota. (I stand by the decision I took on May 11. My country is everything for me and nothing is bigger than the country)" Meanwhile, ACC Chairman and Pakistan Cricket Board President Mohsin Naqvi announced the dates for the multilateral tournament earlier in the month in a post on X. He wrote, 'This year marks yet another milestone in ACC's journey… This will be Asia Cup at its finest,'
