It added that the family was running a drug racket, and it was one of the major narcotic busts in the city in recent times. The people who were arrested in coordination with Thakurganj police were identified as Shravan Kumar Nishad, 65, his son Ayush Nishad, 20, Neha Nishad, 24, who's the wife of his elder son Shravan, and relative Sulfiyan, 20, from Wazirbagh.
The arrests in the Rautghat locality of the city were made on Sunday morning. 'The entire family was running the business. Materials were brought from Barabanki and sold in their house. One more family member is on the run, and he will be nabbed soon,' said Thukurganj SHO Shrikant Rai.
ANTF said 1.015 kg of morphine, 252 grams of charas, 5.5 kg of ganja, and 6 grams of MDMA (mephedrone) were recovered from the accused. A sum of ₹79,530 in cash, a 100 Euro note, four mobile phones, and a Swift Dzire car were also seized from them.
'The family was operating as a cohesive drug distribution unit, sourcing and selling high-value narcotics across state lines. The involvement of three members from a single household shocked investigators and raised concerns over evolving patterns in the drug trade where trusted family links are being used to reduce risk and avoid detection,' said the SHO.
According to the SHO, an FIR under sections 8, 20, 21 and 29 of the NDPS Act has been filed at Thakurganj police station. Further investigation was underway to identify the source network and possible interstate links, he added.

Odisha Dy Speaker Bhoi moots special Act to curb organised crimes

ROURKELA: Taking a leaf out of the Uttar Pradesh government's law book, deputy speaker and Talsara MLA Bhawani Shankar Bhoi has proposed Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to formulate 'Odisha Gangsters and Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act'. Bhoi met the CM on July 24 and handed over a memorandum insisting on enactment of the new Act on the lines of UP. It would effectively curb organised crimes and anti-social activities in Odisha, he said. The deputy speaker said organised crimes, gang operations and anti-social activities have evolved in complexity and scale across various regions of Odisha. Incidents of land grabbing, extortion, contract killing, illegal mining, narcotics trafficking and coordinated criminal syndicates have steadily increased. These groups often operate beyond reach of the existing legal frameworks exploiting procedural delays and loopholes. To address the growing threat and ensure public safety, there is a strong and urgent need to establish a special legislation tailored to address Odisha's law and order realities and similar to the UP Gangsters & Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, 1986, Bhoi said. The proposed Act should seek to prevent formation and operation of organised criminal groups, ensure effective prosecution and deterrence, safeguard public order, safety and property through a dedicated legal framework and enable swift preventive actions including attachment of property and preventive detention, he said.

ACB probe into construction of Barapullah Phase-3 ordered

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on Monday ordered a vigilance inquiry into alleged 'irregularities' in the construction of the Barapullah phase-3 elevated corridor. 'The irregularities in the project and the payment of `175 crore to the contractor should be investigated by the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB),' a government statement said. CM Rekha Gupta headed an expenditure finance committee meeting along with Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma, where the decision was taken for an Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) probe into the matter. Gupta further alleged 'corruption' by the previous Aam Aadmi Party government in the matter of delayed completion of the flyover. According to the government, the elevated road was scheduled for completion in October 2017 but was repeatedly delayed, and eventually the matter went into arbitration. 'The ruling government favoured the contractor with an award of Rs 120 crore. When the payment was withheld, the company approached the high court, which in May 2023 ordered the PWD to pay Rs 175 crore, including interest and GST. The sum was subsequently paid during the tenure of then-PWD minister Atishi,' the government said.

Gunbattle in Chhattisgarh: Encounter breaks out between Maoists and security forces; STF, DRG, CRPF in joint operation

SUKMA: An encounter broke out between security forces and Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday morning, according to a senior police official. The gunfight began on a forested hill when a joint team of security personnel launched an anti-Maoist operation in the area, he added. Personnel from the Special Task Force (STF), District Reserve Guard (DRG)—both units of the state police—and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were involved in the operation, which was launched on Monday following intelligence inputs about Maoist presence in the area, the official said. The operation was still underway and further details were awaited, he added. So far this year, a total of 225 Maoists have been killed in separate encounters across Chhattisgarh. Of these, 208 were eliminated in the Bastar division, which comprises the districts of Bijapur, Bastar, Kanker, Kondagaon, Narayanpur, Sukma, and Dantewada.
