VAR to be refined for new M-League season after controversial debut, says MFL
Acting MFL chief executive officer Mohd Shazli Shaik Mohd said two special briefings regarding the improvement of the system were conducted by the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) together with representatives of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the International Football Federation (Fifa).
According to him, this is a step to improve the quality of refereeing ahead of the new season.
'The improvements are not yet in place, but we are aware of it (the issue) because last year was the first time VAR was implemented.
'So from the issues we identified last year, we will improve it for the new season,' he said recently.
Last year, FAM Referees Committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram said the performance of the referees and the implementation of VAR were rated as excellent, with an average of 0.57 'On-field Review' (OFR) per match and an average of 2.27 minutes of added time used for VAR reviews.
However, several errors sparked criticism, including after referee Razlan Joffri Ali and a VAR official were suspended for two matches after the Super League match between Perak and Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT).
Razlan, however, came in for high praise for his excellent refereeing in the 2024–2025 Malaysia Cup final between JDT and Sri Pahang, which JDT won 2–1.
Mohd Shazli said the MFL is also now on the right track to ensure that the 2025/2026 M-League season runs smoothly and is free from scheduling delays like those that occurred last season.
Therefore, according to him, the full schedule of the new M-League season will be announced after several important elements, such as the Shopee Cup draw and Asian Champions League (ACL), are finalised. — Bernama

NAIROBI: Co-hosts Uganda fought back from 3-1 down to salvage a 3-3 draw with South Africa on Monday to qualify from Group C for their first ever African Nations Championship quarter-finals. At the Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, the 2023 losing finalists Algeria were held to a goalless draw by a 10-man Niger but the result was enough to take them to the last eight for the second successive tournament. Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo appeared to wrap up the game when he put Bafana Bafana into a 3-1 lead in the 83rd minute but Uganda struck back in dramatic style with two late goals. Skipper Allen Okello fired home from the penalty spot two minutes from time after Ivan Ahimbisibwe had been fouled in the box. Uganda were then awarded another penalty deep in injury time after VAR picked up a handball. Rogers Torach blasted home to level the scores and send Uganda into the quarter-finals with South Africa tumbling out. Uganda topped Group C with seven points while Algeria and South Africa tied on six, the Desert Foxes qualifying with a superior goal difference. Training camp up north ideal, but U-23 team incomplete without three key players
PETALING JAYA: When Malaysia Under-23 football team coach Nafuzi Zain looks at his squad settling into camp in Bangkok, he sees both an opportunity and a challenge. While the training camp in Thailand is the perfect platform to prepare for the upcoming 2026 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers, Nafuzi won't have some of his most important players at his disposal - at least not yet. 'I want to thank FAM (Football Association of Malaysia) for organising this camp in Thailand to prepare us well for the qualifiers,' Nafuzi said. 'We've got players from the A1 League and the Super League, and I appreciate the coaches who released them for us.' However, three key players - Terengganu centreback Ubaidullah Shamsul Fazili, Selangor winger Alif Izwan Yuslan and Sabah striker Fergus Tierney remain with their clubs, who are reluctant to release them outside of the FIFA international window. 'They're key men for their clubs now, so we understand. But we're also hopeful they will be released for national duty. 'We know their quality, and they've played with the boys we've selected before.'' Nafuzi's charges are in Group G, which pits them against Thailand, Lebanon and Mongolia. All the matches will be staged at the BG Stadium in Pathum Thani, with only group winners assured of a ticket to Saudi Arabia. For now, Nafuzi has shifted his focus to two friendlies against Kuwait and Oman in Bangkok. For him, they are more than just warm-up games - they are a rehearsal for the intensity Malaysia will face in their opening qualifier against Lebanon. 'Lebanon are a good side, and all the teams we're up against are tough. These games will test us, and that's what we need. It won't be easy, but we will try our best.' The AFF U-23 Championship in July this year left scars but also provided valuable lessons. Malaysia fell short in the group stages, while Thailand finished third in the competition - despite not fielding several of their main playersr. 'That tournament gave me a view of the game, and it made me learn and plan better for the qualifiers. We still have a lot to improve on,' said Nafuzi.

Leeds beat Everton for perfect start to Premier League return
LEEDS: Lukas Nmecha's controversial late penalty gave Leeds lift-off on their return to the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over Everton at a jubilant Elland Road on Monday. The match appeared to be meandering towards a stalemate until James Tarkowski was harshly adjudged to have handled Anton Stach's driven shot. Nmecha had only been on the field for six minutes of his Leeds debut but confidently fired past Jordan Pickford in the 84th minute. "It's not a penalty," said Tarkowski. "I was pretty convinced it was going to get overturned (by VAR). "A bizarre moment and it cost us the point in the end." Everton handed a debut to Manchester City loanee Jack Grealish in the second half, but the Toffees were left to rue not posing anything of an attacking threat in the opening 45 minutes. Leeds are aiming to avoid the trend of the past two seasons when all three promoted clubs have been relegated.
