Boston Legacy signs California native Annie Karich as first player

BOSTON (AP) — The National Women's Soccer League expansion team Boston Legacy has signed its first player, midfielder Annie Karich.
Karich, who is from Surfside, California, joins Boston from Germany's SC Freiburg, where she's played for the past two seasons. She is signed through 2027.
The Legacy joins the league next season along with an expansion club in Denver, bringing the league to 16 teams.
'I want to grow by developing my overall game as a player and by learning how to adapt again into a new city, new team, and everything, and I'm really excited to do that here in Boston,' Karich said in a statement.
Karich played two years at Santa Clara before turning professional and was the West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2023. She has also represented the U.S. national team at the youth levels.
'Annie is a midfielder that brings a unique blend of technical quality and tactical awareness. In her time at SC Freiburg, she has also proved her competitiveness and maturity on the field,' Boston general manager Domènec Guasch said. 'Annie has the potential to make a real impact in our team.'

Scripps Networks' Margins Improve: Can SSP Stock Sustain the Momentum?

The E.W. Scripps Company SSP has been benefiting from its Scripps Networks division, which has emerged as a key driver of margin improvement, supported by disciplined cost control and targeted sports programming. Partnerships with the NWSL and WNBA are expected to further drive both revenues and margin performance in the second and third quarters of 2025. To sustain growth, Scripps is expanding its women's sports line-up with new distribution agreements, such as the SI Women's Games and the Fort Myers Tip-off, which are scheduled for the fourth quarter. For the second quarter, the division's revenues are expected by the company to remain roughly flat, while expenses are projected to decline in the low double digits. SSP reaffirmed its 2025 target of 400-600 basis points of margin expansion but noted that its first-quarter results have already exceeded that range due to early execution of cost-saving measures. Building on the strength of strong ad sales execution and cost savings announced in the fourth quarter of 2024, the company posted its highest network margins in the first quarter of 2025 since the fourth quarter of 2022. In the first quarter, the Scripps Networks division reported $198 million in revenues, down 5.4% year over year, contributing 37.8% of total revenues. Segment profit rose to $64.1 million from $49.7 million in the year-ago quarter, driven by a 16% reduction in expenses. These efforts lifted segment margin to 32%, the highest since late 2022. The E.W. Scripps Company is competing against major players like Nexstar Media Group NXST and Sinclair SBGI in the national network and CTV space. Nexstar Media Group is expanding its national TV sports lineup through branded content, including the new 'Mobil 1 Victory Lane' segment on The CW's NASCAR Xfinity Series broadcasts, strengthening Nexstar Media Group's advertiser appeal in live sports. Sinclair's multicast networks, CHARGE, COMET, ROAR and The Nest, have posted record growth driven by anchor series acquisitions, rebranding efforts and fan-focused multi-platform events like COMET FEST and CHARGECON. With expanded distribution in top national TV markets and growing availability on CTV platforms, Sinclair now operates the fastest-growing network group in the free TV space. SSP shares have rallied 50.2% in the year-to-date (YTD) period, outperforming the Zacks Broadcast Radio and Television industry's growth of 34.1% and the Zacks Consumer Discretionary sector's return of 12.8%. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research From a valuation standpoint, SSP stock is currently trading at a forward 12-months Price/Sales ratio of 0.13X compared with the industry's 4.12X. SSP has a Value Score of A. Image Source: Zacks Investment Research The Zacks Consensus Estimate for second-quarter 2025 loss is pegged at 4 cents per share, which has remained steady over the past 30 days, indicating 73.33% year-over-year growth. Bayern Club World Cup clash with PSG a 'perfect storm': Kompany

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany said his team's Club World Cup quarter-final clash with Paris Saint-Germain on Saturday will be an enthralling encounter because of their similar "extreme" styles of play. Both Luis Enrique's PSG and Kompany's Bayern, champions of the French and German leagues respectively, like to dominate the ball, press high and play attacking football. Advertisement "You have teams who are able to make a lot of good use of the ball in nearly every game, against deep blocks, high presses, everything," Kompany told a news conference Friday. "That creates a sort of, what we've seen here a lot, thunderstorm, right? It's a perfect storm. These games are always interesting, and... I would pay to watch it." Bayern and PSG can rest easy on Saturday because of the roof at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta which means there will be no storm disruption, and Kompany said the match would be one to savour. "If I was a neutral, I would come to see this game, for sure," he said. "Both teams have quite 'extreme' principles, which is why it's usually an interesting game." Advertisement Despite the obvious strength of the Champions League winners, Kompany said there was no side he would rather face than the Parisians. "There's no reason to think that they're not going to be absolutely at their best tomorrow, but I think it's the type of challenge you like," he explained. "If I could pick one team to face, as a professional athlete, as a competitor, it's always the winners, and they are the winners, so we get a chance to play against them. "It's tough, it's the toughest game, maybe, but that's why we're here, so I wouldn't have it any other way." Advertisement - 'Completely over the top' - The Belgian coach also hailed his PSG counterpart Luis Enrique, who won the treble with the French side. In November PSG lost 1-0 against Bayern but Kompany said criticism of the Spaniard at the time was greatly overblown. "I could follow (his press conference) on one of the big screens and all the questions that were asked to him were completely over the top," said Kompany. "Really tough questions, big statements, everything is over, you failed in your job, you can do nothing -- all these big statements. "But I remember watching his team before we played them, most games they should have won 5-0 but somehow it was 1-1 or they lost, so it wasn't reflective of the spirit of the team... (or) of the dominance they had in every game." Advertisement Kompany said he was happy to see Luis Enrique's determination rewarded. "It's nice to see that in those moments consistency paid off for him, but most importantly that he was strong enough to continue," said the coach. "It's not a compliment I'm giving, it's just a fact... it's just interesting to do this (rematch) six months fast forward, and to see how much things can change." rbs/as
