Sabari rail project: Railway Board holds meet with Chief Secretary
Official sources said the delegation, which included Additional Railway Board Member Rajesh Agarwal, Chief Administrative Officer Om Prakash, and Kerala Rail Development Corporation (KRDC) Managing Director Ajith Kumar, held deliberations on cost-sharing arrangements and land acquisition for the project. Another round of meeting to deliberate in detail on these aspects will be held soon
While the State government has expressed only conditional willingness to share project costs, the Railways continue to insist on a 50:50 cost-sharing model. It has also asked the State to bear a portion of the expenditure already incurred. In addition, the State is expected to complete land acquisition up to Erumely. The Railways have agreed to begin construction once this is achieved.
The 110-km Angamaly–Erumely route was first announced in the Railway Budget for 1997–98. So far, land has been acquired for an 8-km stretch and construction has been completed on a 7-km section between Angamaly and Kalady.

Non-AC Coaches In Indian Railways Increase To 70% With Focus On Poor
New Delhi: The percentage of non-AC coaches in trains run by Indian Railways has significantly increased to about 70 per cent, and a special manufacturing programme is being implemented to produce an additional 17,000 non-AC general and sleeper coaches over the next 5 years, Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw informed Parliament on Wednesday. Indian Railways have significantly increased the facilities for passengers demanding general class travel. During the last financial year 2024-25 alone, 1,250 general coaches have been utilised in various long-distance trains. Indian Railways continues to run a large number of trains with affordable fare structures, including Mail, Express and passenger trains, for the benefit of the general public including the poor and lower middle class. Indian Railways has introduced non-AC Amrit Bharat services and Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services, providing high quality services to a larger section of the population, particularly lower income groups, the minister said. Indian Railways has also provisioned for production of another 100 Amrit Bharat Trains, he added. Vaishnaw highlighted that due to higher availability of general coaches, the number of passengers travelling in general/unreserved coaches has shown an increasing trend, going up from 553 crore in 2022-23 to 609 crore in 2023-24 and 651 crore in 2024-25. The number of seats available for non-AC passengers has now gone up to 54 lakh which constitutes 78 per cent of the total while AC seats comprise the remaining 22 per cent. To provide greater accommodation for the passengers using General and non-AC Sleeper Coaches, the extant policy regarding composition of Mail/Express trains provides for 12 General class & Sleeper class non- AC coaches and 8 AC-Coaches, in a train of 22 coaches, thereby providing greater accommodation for the passengers using General and non-AC Sleeper Coaches, Vaishnaw explained. Further, to cater to the needs of passengers desirous of availing unreserved accommodation, Indian Railways operate unreserved non-AC passenger trains/MEMU/EMU etc. for affordable travel, which are in addition to the unreserved accommodation (coaches) available in Mail/Express services. Development of Amrit Bharat Express trains, manufacturing of MEMU trains, and increasing the share of general coaches clearly shows that Indian Railways is catering effectively to the demand for travel in general class, the minister further stated. Indian Railways has introduced fully non-AC Amrit Bharat trains, presently comprising 11 General Class coaches, 8 Sleeper Class coaches, 1 Pantry car and 2 Second class cum Luggage cum Guard Van & Disabled Friendly Compartment. CM for supply of solar energy to Secretariat
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy instructed the Energy department officials to take steps to meet the power requirements of the State Secretariat, the seat of State administration, through solar energy. He directed the officials concerned to coordinate with the Roads & Buildings department for making arrangements in this direction. The Chief Minister gave the directions during a review meeting on the Energy department on Wednesday. Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka was also present. Mr. Revanth Reddy reminded the difficulties faced by vehicle owners for parking their vehicles in the Secretariat under the hot sun in summer. Steps should be taken to set up solar rooftop sheds which could serve the twin purposes of harnessing energy and providing shade to vehicles. Solar fencing should also be set up around the Secretariat. He wanted the officials to take steps to provide power supply to all tribal habitations under Indira Solar Giri Vikasam scheme on a war footing. Officials should ensure that the scheme covered 2.1 lakh tribal farmers in three years providing solar powered pumpsets required for cultivation in six lakh acres.

Tirunelveli caste killing case probe must be shifted to CBI, demands NGO
As there is a chance of the State police's investigation into the alleged caste killing of Kavin Selvaganesh in Tirunelveli being compromised, the case should be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation, according to A. Kathir, Executive Director of Evidence, a Madurai-based NGO. Stressing that both the parents of the accused, S. Surjith, 23, were Sub-Inspectors, Mr. Kathir, during a press meet here on Wednesday, said it would end up with investigating officers favouring the accused. He questioned the intention of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and his Ministers who had not uttered a single word about the tragic death of the youth. 'When Mr. Stalin could call and express his condolence to the family of custodial death victim B. Ajith Kumar and the Ministers could visit his family, why don't they show the same concern in this case too?,' he asked. Commenting that Mr. Stalin was double-faced in his views about a separate Act for caste killing, he said, 'When the DMK was in opposition, it insisted on an Act for caste killing, but now, the same party leader refuses it, saying that the SC/ST Act was enough.' He questioned the SC/ST Commission's role in condemning the heinous act. 'As a Commission, why can they not be swift to condemn such a horrific crime against an SC youth in broad daylight?. Their laidback approach is not going to achieve anything,' he charged. The parents of the accused, who were also added as accused in the First Information Report, were yet to be arrested, he stated. 'The precedent the State is setting in investigating such sensitive cases is baffling. When the SI couple are learned to be supportive of their son's actions, why cannot the police arrest and remand them?,' he questioned.
