'SpiceJet will resume its Haj 2025 operations from Srinagar, operating two flights to Medina using wide-body Airbus A340 aircraft, each accommodating 324 passengers,' the airline said in a statement as quoted by news agency PTI.
The carrier is set to facilitate the travel of approximately 15,500 Haj pilgrims this year.
Earlier this month, SpiceJet confirmed plans to operate 45 Haj flights in the first phase, connecting Gaya, Srinagar, Guwahati, and Kolkata with destinations in Saudi Arabia, including Medina and Jeddah.
In addition to the special Haj services, SpiceJet will also resume its regular scheduled flights to Srinagar starting Tuesday.
Haj 2025 is scheduled to take place between June 4 and 9. This year, one in every 18 pilgrims globally will be from India.
Saudi Arabia allocates pilgrimage quotas to each country based on the proportion of the Muslim population. The total quota for India in 2025 stands at 1,75,025 pilgrims, making it the third-largest contingent globally, following Indonesia and Pakistan, which have the largest Muslim populations.
Out of India's total quota, 1,22,518 seats were allotted to the Haj Committee of India, while 52,507 were designated for private tour operators. However, private tour operators failed to complete the required formalities, such as accommodation bookings, within the set timeline. As a result, their quota was cancelled due to logistical constraints.

Indian Railways To Make Aadhaar Linking Mandatory For Tatkal Booking To Ensure Fairness

The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will make it mandatory for users to link their Aadhaar numbers and login IDs while booking train tickets under the Tatkal quota in order to make the process fair and glitch-free. The move will bar people from booking multiple Tatkal tickets simultaneously, which affects genuine users. "Indian Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need," Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said on X. Bharatiya Railways will soon start using e-Aadhaar authentication to book Tatkal tickets. This will help genuine users get confirmed tickets during need. — Ashwini Vaishnaw (@AshwiniVaishnaw) June 4, 2025 "The Ministry of Railways, Railway Board, hereby notifies that the Centre for Railway Information System (CRIS) be allowed to perform Aadhaar authentication, on a voluntary basis, to establish the identity of ticket-checking staff, crew members and passengers, using Yes/No or eKYC authentication facility," noted a Gazette notification dated May 27, 2025. An IRCTC official told PTI recently that the Indian Railway has deployed Artificial Intelligence-based advanced technical solutions to curb unauthorised ticketing practices. The system detects and deactivates such user IDs before they can disrupt the booking system. As per the news agency, the move is already making progress as the creation of new user IDs on the IRCTC platform dropped from 60,000 to 65,000 per day to just 10,000 to 12,000. IRCTC has also blocked 35 million fraudulent user IDs, the official said. "Let's presume that a person named A approaches an unauthorised agent to get a ticket booked from Delhi to Agra. The agent will use several disposable email IDs (using domain names available on Google) and mobile numbers to create, let's say, 30 profiles on the IRCTC platform," the officials told PTI while explaining the process. The email ID becomes invalid, the profile, however, remains after authentication, which is used by unauthorised agents to book a ticket for a person. Hence, the agents have 30 attempts to book a ticket for that one person. Public outcry over Tatkal booking issues Several people have raised issues they face while booking the Tatkal tickets from the IRCTC website, with most recently Dr A. Velumani, the founder of Thyrocare, calling it "betrayal". Dr Velumani shared a viral image on his X account, which noted, "Tatkal booking on IRCTC has become a joke. Seats show available, but the moment it turns 10 AM, the site hangs. By 10:03, all seats are gone - even in remote routes. And then at 10:04, the site suddenly becomes smooth again, as if nothing happened."

Sensex jumps nearly 600 points as RBI cuts repo rate by 50 bps; realty, bank, auto stocks surge

Interest-rate-sensitive realty index jumped 2.80 per cent, while auto index surged 1.14 per cent and bankex climbed 0.98 per cent. Recovering all the early lost ground, the 30-share BSE Sensex jumped 591.94 points to 82,033.98 in morning trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 205.2 points to 24,956.10. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) Benchmark equity indices Sensex and Nifty surged on Friday morning trade after the RBI cut repo rate by a higher-than-expected 50 basis points to prop up growth. The RBI on Friday cut repo rate by a higher-than-expected 50 basis points to prop up growth, which has slowed to a four-year low of 6.5 per cent in FY25. Following the rate cut, the key policy rate eased to a three-year low of 5.5 per cent, providing relief to home, auto and corporate loans borrowers. This is the lowest repo rate in three years. After a detailed assessment of the evolving macroeconomic and financial development, as well as the economic outlook, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decided to reduce the repo rate by 50 basis points, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said. Malhotra, however, retained the GDP forecast for the current fiscal at 6.5 per cent. The inflation projection was lowered to 3.7 per cent from the earlier estimate of 4 per cent, supported by expectations of a good monsoon. From the Sensex firms, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, Maruti, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, State Bank of India, Bajaj Finserv and HDFC Bank were among the major gainers. Sun Pharma, Infosys, Nestle and HCL Tech were the laggards. 'A third straight cut in the repo rates this year with 50 bps cut instead of an estimate of 25 bps is a pleasant move. This demonstrates a pro-growth stance and a front-loading of rate cuts given our stable economic growth and declining inflation. A change in policy stance from accommodative to neutral is also justified as it can help to strike a right balance between growth and inflation, especially if geopolitical issues escalate further,' Umeshkumar Mehta, CIO, SAMCO Mutual Fund, said. In Asian markets, South Korea's Kospi and Japan's Nikkei 225 index were trading in the positive territory while Shanghai's SSE Composite index and Hong Kong's Hang Seng quoted marginally lower. US markets ended lower on Thursday. Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 208.47 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data. Global oil benchmark Brent crude dipped 0.28 per cent to USD 65.16 a barrel. On Thursday, the 30-share BSE Sensex climbed 443.79 points or 0.55 per cent to settle at 81,442.04. The Nifty rose 130.70 points or 0.53 per cent to 24,750.90. PTI SUM DR This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. ThePrint holds no responsibility for its content.

RBI cuts CRR by a steep 1 pc, to unlock Rs 2.5 lakh crore to bank funds by Dec

'The Reserve Bank remains committed to provide sufficient liquidity to the banking system. To further provide durable liquidity, it has been decided to reduce the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points (bps) to 3 per cent of net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) in a staggered manner during the course of the year,' RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said, while announcing the bi-monthly MPC outcome. With the reduction in four equal tranches ending November 29, 2025, the CRR would come down to 3 per cent. This means that the commercial banks would have to maintain a lower level of 3 per cent in liquid cash form with the RBI allowing them to have higher funds for lending. Mumbai, Jun 6 (PTI) Reserve Bank on Friday decided to cut Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by a huge 1 per cent, which will unlock Rs 2.5 lakh crore liquidity to the banking system for lending to productive sectors of the economy. This reduction will be carried out in four equal tranches of 25 bps each with effect from the fortnights beginning September 6, October 4, November 1 and November 29, 2025, he said. 'The cut in CRR would release primary liquidity of about Rs 2.5 lakh crore to the banking system by December 2025. Besides providing durable liquidity, it will reduce the cost of funding of the banks, thereby helping in monetary policy transmission to the credit market,' he said. Higher credit flow will help in boosting economic growth which hit a four-year low of 6.5 per cent in FY'25. 'I would like to reiterate that we will continue to monitor the evolving liquidity and financial market conditions and proactively take further measures, as warranted,' he said. RBI had last slashed CRR by 50 basis points to 4 per cent in the December 2024 MPC announcement. It was done in two equal tranches of 25 basis points, each with effect from the fortnight beginning December 14, 2024 and December 28, 2024. The move led to the unlocking of Rs 1.16 lakh crore to the banking system and easing the liquidity situation. The RBI on May 4, 2022 had raised CRR to 4.5 per cent from 4 per cent in an off-cycle Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, with effect from May 21 the same year. RBI, however, did not tinker with Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR) and maintained it at 18 per cent. SLR is a regulatory requirement that requires banks to hold 18 per cent of total deposits or net demand and time liabilities (NDTL) in government securities. This ensures that banks have sufficient liquidity to meet customer withdrawal demands and maintain financial stability. On the liquidity situation, Malhotra said, a total amount of Rs 9.5 lakh crore of durable funds has been injected into the banking system since January. As a result, after remaining in deficit since mid-December, liquidity conditions transitioned to surplus at the end of March. This is also evident from the tepid response to daily Variable Repo Rate (VRR) auctions and high Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) balances – the average daily balance during April-May amounted to Rs 2 lakh crore. Reflecting the improvement in liquidity conditions, the weighted average call rate (WACR) – the operating target of monetary policy – traded at the lower end of the LAF corridor since the last policy, he said. The comfortable liquidity surplus in the banking system has further reinforced transmission of policy repo rate cuts to short term rates, he said. 'However, we are yet to see a perceptible transmission in the credit market segment, though we must keep in mind that it happens with some lag,' he said.
