
A thorny joy: Holding on to the taste of home
There is something unmistakably Malaysian about the sight of a roadside stall glowing under fluorescent light, its tables piled high with thorny green orbs, the air alive with the sound of bargaining, laughter and debate over which variety reigns supreme.
Durian isn't just food; it is nostalgia, identity and the shared joy of prying open a fruit that has been passed down through generations – sticky fingers, creamy flesh and bittersweet perfection.
And yet this season, the joy feels a little different. Not gone but edged with something quieter: hesitation.
Even the humble kampung durian is now pushing RM15/kg. Musang King? That is a conversation for another tax bracket.
Where once we would buy without thinking, maybe even sit down for an impromptu feast by the roadside, now we pause, do the mental math and wonder if the treat is worth the pinch.
For many in the M40, it is a familiar tug-of-war. We earn just enough to miss out on aid but not quite enough to ride above the inflationary tide.
Petrol, tolls, groceries and school expenses – everything feels like it is creeping higher. And in between the big bills and budget spreadsheets, even the small indulgences start to feel like luxuries.
The durian has become a symbol of this quiet squeeze – once an unpretentious, seasonal joy, it now requires planning, compromise and sometimes even sacrifice.
A fruit that once brought spontaneous pleasure now involves group buys, budget discussions and the odd sheepish glance at your bank app.
Still, we gather. Because despite the price tag, the durian's power lies in how it brings us together. The stall is one of the few spaces where all of Malaysia converges – shoulder to shoulder, nose to nose, bargaining over a D24 or defending the supremacy of a Tekka.
A Malay pak cik and a Chinese aunty may argue over which batch smells stronger. An Indian anne may chime in about how the kampung variety beats them all. No one cares who you voted for or what God you pray to, what matters is how bitter you like your flesh and whether you can open the fruit without a knife. That, to me, is Malaysia at its purest.
And as odd as it sounds, my own durian ritual is a solitary one. My 10-year-old son has a gag reflex that activates the moment he catches a whiff. My seven-year-old autistic daughter experiences the smell as an assault on her senses, turning away with quiet resolve. So, I eat it alone, crouched in the kitchen like a criminal hiding my loot.
But in that moment, I feel more grounded than at any Deepavali open house or long table filled with familiar faces and old stories.
Of course, there is a reason the prices have soared. Our beloved Musang King has become an international celebrity, especially in China, where it fetches eye-watering prices. Export demand has turned local farms into global suppliers and we, the fruit's first lovers, are now left to compete for a smaller slice of the pie.
Add to that, the increasingly erratic weather – too much rain, sudden heatwaves – and you get smaller harvests, tougher farming conditions and ultimately, a steeper price per seed.
In response, the government has introduced small but meaningful initiatives like the Rahmah Madani Sales where local fruits, including durian, are sold at subsidised prices through mobile stalls and community markets. I recently stumbled upon one outside a local pasar.
There was nothing polished about it – just a makeshift stall with handwritten prices and crates of fruit – but it felt honest. The durians were good, the prices kind and the people came from every walk of life.
A Malay dad and his son stood next to a Chinese aunty with two durians tucked under her arm. Behind me, a young Indian couple whispered in Tamil, debating if they could afford a second fruit. In that queue, for a few minutes, everything felt right.
The Rahmah sales may not solve the problem entirely but they do send a clear message: this joy should still be within reach. It should not just be an export commodity or a high-end delicacy; it should remain what it has always been – ours.
Because in the end, the durian is not just about taste; it is about memory. It is about belonging. It is about the way we Malaysians, regardless of race, income or postcode, are bound by the same seasonal craving.
So, maybe we buy less, maybe we downgrade from Musang King to D13 or maybe we eat it at home in quiet rebellion, but we still eat it. We still make space for it because some pleasures are worth preserving. Not for extravagance but for identity.
And as long as I can still afford even a single seed, I will eat it with my hands, without guilt and with the quiet conviction that in this creamy, stubborn joy, I am holding on to something much bigger than fruit; I am holding on to who we are.

The Benedictine nuns consider themselves to be a spiritual refuge in a secular environment, welcoming all those who are searching, the weary and those who long to draw near to God. 'We want to bring Jesus into the world like Mary,' according to Sr. Katharina, Abbess of the Benedictine Monastery of Omberg. She sums up what drives her community in a few words: a life lived in the footsteps of Christ, marked by silence, hospitality and a profound spiritual foundation. The Monastery is not centuries old but rather 'young' with a special history. The Monastery's origins date back to the Marientöchter Evangelical Community of Sisters, a Swedish-founded community. In the 1980s, several sisters began to explore monastic tradition more closely. 'The deeper we delved, the more it became clear to us: these are our roots,' says Sr. Katharina. In 1988, the community united with the Catholic Church—a process that took almost 10 years. 'We wanted to live in reconciliation and love. There should be no divisions,' she emphasizes. In 1997, the sisters had outgrown their previous homes and moved into a newly built monastery in Heliga Hjärtas. It was a conscious decision to follow Saint Benedict's rules. 'We visited many monasteries, especially those in Germany, to learn from the people who are already leading this life,' recalls the abbess. The sisters received special support from the monastery near Gütersloh, (Archdiocese of Paderborn), Germany, with which they still share a close relationship. There are currently 14 nuns between the ages of 40 and 85 living at the monastery, most of whom are Swedish, with the exception of a Polish-born sister. Their daily lives follow the Benedictine rhythm of prayer, work and communal life. 'Our goal is to seek God in people, in the world, wherever we go,' says Sr. Katharina. The monastery also welcomes guests. For many years the sisters have been running a 'House of Silence,' in which they welcome individuals and small groups, often people with no religious links, who share a desire for spirituality. 'Many do not know what they are searching for, but they find something here that touches them,' notes Sr. Katharina. 'People often say that come to rest and listen to prayers.' The demand is high, greater than the monastery can accommodate. There are 18 guest rooms, three of which are cloistered and reserved for priests and religious. The monastery is intentionally small, to leave room for personal conversations and spiritual guidance. 'Many of our guests work in healthcare or education. They are exhausted and feel empty,' says Sr. Katharina. 'They say, 'here, we can talk about the important things.' It's a great gift.' The Sacred Heart Convent is well-known to religious communities. Sisters from Denmark, the Netherlands, and other small monastic communities across Scandinavia visit regularly for exchanges. The Benedictine nuns of Omberg also share a connection with the Benedictine monastery of Alexanderdorf, near Berlin, Germany, in a network of spiritual bonds that extend well beyond Sweden. Though there are currently no novices, the hope for new vocations is strong. Sr. Katharina remains hopeful as young women continue to show an interest in monastic life. Recently, a man went viral on the internet for revealing in a video that the durians of the highest quality were in fact exported to foreign countries instead of ending up on our tables. Global Plastics Treaty: Malaysia and Malaysians' roles in plastic pollution
The world is drowning in plastics – it's in the waters, on beaches and in landfills, with microplastics found on Mount Everest, in the Mariana Trench and in human bodies. Plastic pollution has become a serious global challenge, and Malaysia – which has the highest microplastic consumption per person – is among the most heavily affected. With the Global Plastics Treaty (GPT) — an international legally binding agreement to end plastic pollution — nearing its last negotiation stage at INC5.2, urgent action is needed. The INC5.2 is the second part of the fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee – organised by the United Nations Environment Programme – where countries work together to finalise the GPT. It takes place from Aug 5-14 at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland and the decisions made there will have an impact on how plastic is handled for years to come. Malaysia must lead The GPT offers the opportunity to tackle the root causes of plastic pollution through prevention, reduction and sustainable alternatives. Zero Waste Malaysia – a community group and non-profit organisation established in 2016 that supports the zero waste lifestyle – emphasises that Malaysia needs to show strong leadership at the negotiation table. A memorandum has been signed by 127 Malaysian organisations – including Zero Waste Malaysia, Sahabat Alam Malaysia, Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP), Persatuan Perlindungan Alam Sekitar Malaysia and the Environmental Protection Society Malaysia – calling for the leaders to push for key measures to be implemented. These include having significant, systemic changes such as eliminating dangerous plastics and chemicals, reducing plastic production, tightening rules for the design of plastic products, enforcing stricter laws for emissions and leaks, and investing in reuse and refill infrastructure. The memorandum highlights that while many countries support the treaty addressing plastic pollution from manufacturing to disposal, some still oppose it. This situation is the reason why Malaysia must take the lead to bring change. By doing so, Malaysia could secure a key role in the treaty's progress, improve its international standing, and be better positioned to plan for the long-term sustainable development of its industries. A health and environmental problem Plastic waste is not just an environmental issue, it is a public health emergency. Scientific studies discovered that microplastics, formed from the breakdown of food packaging and plastic products, carry toxic chemicals connected to serious illnesses such as cancer, respiratory and hormonal disorders, inflammatory bowel disease and reproductive health problems. These microplastics have been found in the human lung, blood, liver, brain and even breastmilk. The dependence on single-use plastics, from 'ikat tepi' beverage bags to disposable packaging, contributes to this crisis. Since these plastic products are usually made of low-quality or mixed materials that can't be recycled, they get thrown away freely and end up harming Malaysia's ecosystem and environment. It has been shown that zero waste solutions provide more than 200 job opportunities in industries like recycling, reuse and repair. Various individuals and groups have also been making small but significant changes. For example, Zero Waste Malaysia volunteer Oh Sok Peng created the Refiller Mobile, Malaysia's first moveable zero-waste store. The van supplies cleaning agents, personal care products and eco-friendly items to homes, workplaces, universities and private events. Oh has been successfully running the Refiller Mobile for over four years, creating a reuse economy. Similarly, Hara Makers has raised awareness on waste issues by organising river clean-ups, recycling leftover plastics and working with communities. They caution that using plastic waste in remote areas with no disposal systems can cause more harm, so they shifted to refill and reuse projects with residents which demonstrates that reducing waste at its source is a better long-term solution. 'Our own community has grown to over 50,000 members in recent years, showing that there are still many who want to improve our way of living. We recognise that progress may be slow and more needs to be done, but we also have seen great initiatives and work from others through their success stories of reducing waste,' says Zero Waste Malaysia. 'If we don't create waste in the first place, then we don't need to figure out how to deal with it.' Every Malaysian, from children to adults, plays an essential role in solving the plastic crisis, as even the simplest efforts count. "Ultimately, everyone should be informed about the urgency of the problem and the significance of international negotiations like INC5.2 since they can directly influence policies that can help reduce single-use plastic consumption in daily life," says Zero Waste Malaysia. "Start to practise composting organic waste to reduce what ends up in landfills and purchase products without packaging or with minimal, sustainable packaging. "People should also embrace the BYO (bring your own) culture, like using reusable bags, bottles, straws and containers, which can lessen reliance on disposable plastics," it adds. Last but not least, Zero Waste Malaysia hopes to see a quick move towards avoiding unnecessary single-use plastics like straws, UFO saucers, and plastic utensils — items that have reusable options readily available.
