Nurul Izzah tipped as PKR deputy presidency frontrunner, say Shahril and KJ

KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Izzah Anwar is emerging as the leading contender for the PKR deputy presidency, according to two former Umno leaders.
According to FMT, former Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said the party's machinery appears to be aligning behind her despite her recent return to active politics.
He said Nurul Izzah's entry into the race had disrupted expectations that the top two positions in PKR, the presidency and deputy presidency, would go uncontested.
"Within a week of her announcement, it's clear that the party establishment is backing her," said Shahril in the latest episode of the Keluar Sekejap podcast.
He also commented on the unusual nature of Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's campaign, pointing to the latter's recent remark encouraging members to vote for Nurul Izzah – a statement Rafizi later clarified as a sarcastic quip.
Shahril said Rafizi had gone so far as to say he would resign from his ministerial post if he lost the contest, suggesting it was a strategic move to frame the stakes of the race.
"He's being clever. On one hand, he's threatening to quit if he loses, but at the same time, he's implying that others – perhaps Izzah – didn't win in GE15 but still want to contest."
Former Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin also defended Nurul Izzah's decision to run despite her electoral defeat in the 15th General Election.
"People say she lost her seat, so she shouldn't contest. But we must consider the context. There was a strong political wave in the northern states.
"Even someone like Reezal Merican couldn't hold on to Kepala Batas," he said.
Khairy stressed that electoral outcomes do not always reflect a candidate's capabilities.
"Sometimes, voters choose based on parties, not personalities."
Both Shahril and Khairy acknowledged the potential political ramifications of the party election results.
"If Rafizi wins, it could signal a divide between him and Anwar. If Nurul Izzah wins, Perikatan Nasional will likely exploit it as nepotism," Shahril said.
Khairy, however, believes any negative fallout would be short-lived.
"If Rafizi wins, he'll build a narrative of unity with Anwar. If Izzah wins, she can argue that she was elected by party members and that political dynasties are not unique to PKR, they are common across many parties," he said.
He also contrasted the candidates' approaches, describing Rafizi's campaign as data-driven, with emphasis on voter sentiment among Malays, Chinese, and Indians.
In contrast, Nurul Izzah, he noted, has focused on promoting party unity.

Some truth to Malays feeling sidelined, says Umno veteran

Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, a former minister, says the government cannot avoid or ignore the proposed 'Malay unity' movement. PETALING JAYA : An Umno veteran says the unity government must look to regain the confidence of the Malays, following former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's latest effort to unite the Malays and 'restore their political power'. Former minister Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin said the government cannot avoid or ignore this movement as there was truth to the notion that the Malay community feels sidelined under the unity government. He added that Mahathir recognised this and was seeking to exploit it for his own political gain. 'Maybe it's merely a matter of perception or imagination (to some parties), but I think that there's truth to it (at the grassroots level). And something needs to be done to regain the confidence of the Malays. 'Whatever excuses we want to give, when you go to the grassroots, the reality is that many Malays feel sidelined, and Mahathir is exploiting that,' he told FMT. Raja Nong Chik claimed that, based on feedback he received, nine out of 10 of his close Malay peers have expressed concern about the fate of the community under the current administration. 'They worry for the future of the Malays, and these are highly-educated guys. We're not even talking about the grassroots level yet. 'However, this doesn't mean they will vote for the opposition just yet, it's just that they want some assurance (that the special privileges of the Malays would be safeguarded,' said the former Lembah Pantai Umno chief. The new Malay unity alliance was launched by Mahathir on Wednesday, with the backing of Perikatan Nasional's major components, PAS and Bersatu, as well as several Malay-based NGOs and academics. Mahathir, a former Umno president who later led Bersatu, Pejuang and Gerakan Tanah Air before leaving all three, said the alliance would not be a formal political party for now but a loose coalition to gather the Malays under one 'big umbrella'. Raja Nong Chik said the government led by Anwar Ibrahim must handle this new political threat wisely to ensure his administration retains the trust of the Malays.

I paid for haj trip using my own savings, says Nurul Izzah

KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Izzah Anwar has clarified that her pilgrimage to Makkah was self-funded. In a Facebook post, the PKR deputy president and former Permatang Pauh member of parliament, who is currently performing the haj, said all travel arrangements, including accommodation and transportation, were organised by licensed travel agency Mimm Travel. She said that she and her husband, Yin Shao Loong, flew on a commercial flight and paid for the trip using their personal savings. "Praise be to Allah, my husband and I were granted the opportunity to perform the haj as guests of Allah SWT through a mujamalah (courtesy) visa. "There was no private jet, as falsely alleged. "Our journey was like that of millions of other pilgrims." Nurul Izzah also expressed concern over the slanderous content. She said if something untrue is spread, it must be corrected. "In our differing views and political struggles, let us not turn acts of worship into material for slander or accusation. "Let us all focus on goodwill and prayers for one another and hope that Muslims will be granted the opportunity to perform the haj with ease and sincerity." Nurul Izzah also shared that while in Madinah, she and her husband attended a religious session with prominent Islamic scholars including Sheikh Dr Omar Suleiman, Dr Tahir Wyatt, and Ustaz Dr Mohd Amirul Hassan Ahmaf Tajuddin – an experience she described as deeply moving.

China committed to building South China Sea into sea of peace, friendship and cooperation, says report

BEIJING (Bernama-Xinhua): Xinhua Institute, a think tank affiliated with Xinhua News Agency, on Sunday released a report highlighting China's commitment to building the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation. The report, titled "Making the South China Sea a Sea of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation: China's Actions" and published in both Chinese and English, noted that China has always been a steadfast advocate, promoter, and guardian of peace and stability in the South China Sea, reported Xinhua. According to the report, China has long maintained that peace and stability in these waters depend on collaborative efforts between China and member states of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean). Through deepened trust and cooperation across political, economic, and cultural spheres, this partnership has created lasting mutual benefits. Consequently, China has emerged as a reliable force for maintaining regional peace and stability while promoting cooperation and development in the South China Sea. The report stated that China has always adhered to the principles of building the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation: equal-footed consultation, rule-based co-management, mutually beneficial cooperation, and a constructive role. The report called on China and AseaN countries to ensure that the solutions of the South China Sea issues remain in their own hands, to adhere to sound principles and direction in addressing the issues, and to continue upholding the notion of a maritime community with a shared future. The report also called for joint efforts by China and Asean countries to build the South China Sea into a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation that benefits the people of all regional countries. The think tank report has received positive evaluations from experts. They believe the report comprehensively explained China's practical achievements, insights, and pathways in advocating for the South China Sea to become a sea of peace, friendship, and cooperation, marking a significant academic contribution to the study of South China Sea issues. Zhang Jie, a research fellow at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, noted that the report not only offered historical depth but also summarised the latest developments in the South China Sea situation. It further clarified China's principled stance and comprehensively demonstrated China's positive contributions to the peace and stability of the South China Sea based on facts. Yang Xiao, a research fellow at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, stated that the report, with a vision for a better future in the South China Sea, creatively explained and summarised China's consistent adherence to the principles on South China Sea issues. Those principles serve as the foundation for China-ASEAN dialogue, cooperation, and constructive development, carrying significant theoretical and practical importance for the future, consensus-building, and bridging differences. Ma Chao, associate research fellow at the Maritime Silk Road Research Institute of Hainan Normal University, believed that China, upholding the concept of a maritime community with a shared future, has deepened cooperation with parties in the South China Sea. The report once again demonstrated China's sincere commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, helping the international community better understand, appreciate, and respect China's stance on the South China Sea. - Bernama-Xinhua
