South Africa glamping boom opens new frontier for sustainable tourism

Zawya05-08-2025
South Africa's glamping sector is gaining momentum as travellers increasingly seek immersive, eco-friendly experiences that blend luxury with the outdoors. This growing trend is not just about upscale camping — it represents a vibrant way to connect with the country's diverse landscapes and communities, from the Karoo's wide-open skies to the lush vineyards of the Winelands.
The recent inaugural Glamping Expo in Johannesburg highlighted how this style of tourism supports rural development and small business growth, aligning with broader goals for sustainable and inclusive travel promoted by the G20.
Thembisile Sehloho, chief marketing officer of South African Tourism, spoke at the event, describing glamping as "where the untamed spirit of Africa meets curated comfort."
"As we welcome the world for the G20, we are proud to showcase how tourism can be a force for good, directly contributing to the resilience and hope symbolised by our national flower, the King Protea – the emblem of our G20 Presidency. We invite the world to look beyond the ordinary and discover an experience deeply rooted in our land, one that promises adventure and a profound sense of peace," Sehloho said.
What sets South African glamping apart?
Beyond the comforts of a king-sized bed or a private hot tub under the stars, South Africa's glamping experiences carry a unique character shaped by the country's extraordinary biomes.
"South Africa's glamping destinations reflect the country's extraordinary diversity. Local and international visitors aren't just camping in a nice tent; they're waking up to the magic of a unique biome," said Sehloho.
The offerings span multiple regions and styles, including luxury tented suites like Sindile at Shamwari Game Reserve in the Bushveld, riverside tents such as Camp Canoe at Boschendal in the Winelands, and the vast silence and starry skies of the Karoo at AfriCamps.
Sleeping under a blanket of stars
The Northern Cape and Karoo's vast unpolluted skies offer exceptional stargazing. At !Xaus Lodge in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park — a community-owned site — visitors enjoy raw and uninterrupted nature. Meanwhile, Kagga Kamma Nature Reserve features 'Star Suites,' open-air beds that offer direct views of the Milky Way.
Glamping styles for all adventurers
South Africa caters to a broad range of travellers:
• Safari purists: Classic tented camps in private reserves across KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Eastern Cape offer intimate Big Five experiences.
• Off-grid innovators: Futuristic geodesic domes and glass-roofed cottages, such as the Nightjar Dome near Machadodorp, combine technology with off-grid serenity.
• Coastal souls: Clifftop tents along the Whale Coast or serene riverside stays like Wolfkop Camping Villages in the Cederberg provide opportunities for swimming, canoeing, and disconnection.
"Glamping is tourism that uplifts communities and protects our natural heritage. We cannot wait to welcome the G20 nations and travellers from around the globe. We invite them to discover our little-known dorpies, go off the beaten track to see something special, and support small towns in new ways. South Africa truly awaits. Come find your joy through glamping," Sehloho concluded.

South Africa: $39.8mln sky-train proposal for Cape Town Waterfront faces public scrutiny

The City of Cape Town's plan to repurpose a prime 4.5ha site in Three Anchor Bay—originally earmarked for affordable housing—is now subject to a public-participation process, allowing residents to provide input on the proposal. Valued at R700m, Erf 2187 in Green Point could become the headquarters and terminus of a proposed sky-train, forming part of an ambitious expansion of the V&A Waterfront at Granger Bay. If given the green light, the elevated rail line will run along the unfinished Foreshore freeway to Woodstock, and will include links to Cape Town Stadium, Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the Cape Town Cruise Terminal. Forecasts indicate that the rail network — led by South African development engineer Gareth Ramsay — will have the capacity to carry 30,000 passengers per hour in each direction, meeting the transport needs of the city's growing number of visitors. Last year alone, the V&A Waterfront attracted 24 million visitors, Cape Town Stadium over 1 million, and the CTICC 700,000. It has been put forward that the Sky Train be integrated with Cape Town's existing Metrorail network. The public comment period will end on Monday, 25 August 2025. Feedback can be submitted online.

South Africa: Home Affairs expands Trusted Tour Operator Scheme to boost tourism jobs

The Department of Home Affairs has expanded its Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) by adding 45 new vetted operators, increasing the total number participating to 110. Launched six months ago, the programme aims to simplify visa applications and boost tourism from key source markets like India and China. Since the launch of TTOS in February 2025, the scheme has attracted over 25,000 tourists who might otherwise have been deterred by long visa processing times and cumbersome paper-based systems. Research from Operation Vulindlela estimates that one new formal sector job is created for every 13 tourists visiting South Africa, suggesting that the scheme has already contributed to approximately 1,924 new jobs during its first phase. Digital-first approach replaces old system TTOS replaces manual, inefficient visa processes requiring applicants to travel long distances for in-person applications and returns. Instead, vetted tour operators upload visa applications online and receive digital decisions within an average of 24 hours. Participating tour operators enter agreements with the Department of Home Affairs to take responsibility for the tourists they bring to the country. Minister highlights digital transformation agenda Minister of Home Affairs Dr Leon Schreiber said the scheme reflects the department's digital transformation agenda aimed at economic growth and job creation. 'The fact that we have attracted over 25,000 tourists in just six months working with a small handful of tour operators confirms the enormous potential of growing this digital-first approach," he said. Broader reforms to support tourism growth Dr Schreiber added that the expansion of TTOS is part of broader reforms, including the introduction of Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and dedicated visa schemes for events and creative industries. "All of our work is guided by our vision to deliver Home Affairs @ home, by building digital channels that enable both South Africans and legitimate travellers to obtain services online, from the comfort of their own homes,' he said. The Department said that it sees TTOS as a crucial step towards boosting tourism's contribution to South Africa's economy amid ongoing economic challenges. All rights reserved. © 2022.
