Cruise Scotland warns government against ‘damaging' levy proposal

The Scottish cruise industry has lashed out at the government's proposals to introduce a cruise ship levy over fears it would deter cruises from visiting its ports. The Scottish Government announced earlier this year that it is considering a proposal to allow local authorities to create a visitor levy on cruise ships docking at its ports. During the consultation, Cruise Scotland, a membership-based marketing organisation that represents key cruise industry players, issued a warning to the Scottish Government that the levy could damage the sector. The organisation expressed its concern in its formal submission to the government consultation on implementing a cruise ship levy, saying that cruises will become discouraged from visiting Scottish ports. 'Scotland must decide whether it wants to attract or deter a sector that delivers over £130m annually to the national economy and sustains jobs in some of the most remote and economically vulnerable communities,' Rob Mason, chair of Cruise Scotland, said. Mr Mason also claimed that if the levy was mishandled, it could result in job losses, cause a slump in local business growth and disrupt a tourism model that benefits communities. Cruise Scotland said that the government's plans are so far too ambiguous, stating that prolonged uncertainty regarding the levy is 'damaging' as cruise operators cannot plan accordingly. The group also warned against creating devolved powers for individual councils to implement the levy, as it claimed this would create competition between areas and would require port authorities to function as tax collectors. 'We must remember that this is a movable market that does not need to come to Scotland, despite all we have to offer, and neighbouring regions in the North Atlantic and Northern Europe are strongly positioned to benefit from any displacement,' Mr Mason added. While the chair said Cruise Scotland 'fully acknowledges' the need for targeted investment, he called upon the government to be more transparent in its decisions around the levy and asked for 'close collaboration' with the industry. The organisation said it remains engaged in discussions with policymakers. Cruise Scotland says that 1.1 million passengers visited Scottish ports in 2024, contributing over £130 million to local businesses and communities. Kirsty Hutchison, Cruise Scotland's market development manager, said that this number could see a drop if a levy were implemented. 'Introducing a levy could send the wrong signal to cruise operators at a time when Scotland is successfully growing its reputation as a responsible and attractive destination,' Ms Hutchinson said. 'The evidence from other markets suggests that a levy risks reducing visitor numbers, along with the significant revenue and opportunity they bring.' The levy has received support in other areas. The Scottish Greens are in favour of the potential to cut climate emissions, while the Orkney Islands Council said it would welcome the revenue it would generate for the communities. The consultation on the levy has now closed, and responses will be analysed over the summer to inform ministers the next steps they can take.

ECU Hosts 6th annual Pharma Conference

GREENVILLE, N.C (WNCT) — The pharmaceutical industry is rapidly growing right here in the east, and events like today's Spring Pharma Conference at ECU emphasize that. A two-day conference at ECU shared info on topical discussions and networking among fellow pharma professionals. Jack Pender, the event organizer, says an event like this helps create unity in the industry. 'We host this event annually to get the pharma community together, but also, first and foremost, it's an educational event for people to learn about some technical aspects, medical regulatory aspects of the pharmaceutical industry,' he said. 'It's also an opportunity for them to meet their counterparts at other companies to do the same job so they can compare notes and decide what's common practice.' Pender added an event like this also helps young professionals with workforce development. Vendors, sponsors and special guests shared their target approach and manufacturing tracks within the industry. More than 250 professionals representing 99 companies were able to unite. Why Redwire Stock Is Rocketing Higher Today

Redwire's suite of tools designed for construction on the moon and Mars were cleared by NASA. The company appears likely to play a key role in NASA's planned exploration of outer space, but the timeline for that exploration remains very much in doubt. 10 stocks we like better than Redwire › Space technology company Redwire (NYSE: RDW) said its lunar and Martian manufacturing technology has passed a key review, meaning it can be involved in future NASA projects. Investors are reaching for the stars, sending Redwire shares up as much as 21% at the open Wednesday and up 16% as of 11 a.m. Eastern. If the future does involve humanity setting up shop on the moon and exploring Mars, Redwire hopes to make the infrastructure that makes those endeavors possible. On Wednesday, the company said its Mason tool suite had passed NASA's Critical Design Review test and can now be used in future missions. Mason tools, designed to operate on the moon and Mars, can be used to build berms, landing pads, and roads. The approval is part of a $12.9 million NASA award to prototype Mason for moon activities. "We are proud to have successfully completed this exciting milestone and bring Mason one step closer to launch," Tom Campbell, Redwire's president of space missions, said in a statement. "Leveraging Redwire's unmatched in-space manufacturing experience, Mason technology is critical to enabling sustainable operations on the Moon and Mars surface." The announcement comes one day after Redwire announced a separate contract to conduct space-based research on a new cancer treatment using the company's in-space laboratory tech. There's every reason to be excited about Redwire. We appear headed toward a new golden age of space exploration, and unlike in the 1960s, private companies, including space stocks like Redwire, are likely to play a leading role. But there is also ample reason for caution. Redwire reported just $61.4 million in revenue in its most recent quarter, but it's valued by the market at more than $1.3 billion. Much of that valuation is based on potential, but Redwire is going to need a lot to go right, not all of which it can control. Among the potential questions: Will SpaceX and other contractors meet deadlines to build the rockets needed to make repeated visits to the moon possible? For those excited by the opportunity, it would be wise to make Redwire a small part of a well-diversified portfolio.
