In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Rozy Badyal, consultant dermatologist, Kaya Limited said, 'If you are noticing dullness, tanning, uneven tone, or early signs of ageing, your skin may be under stress. Daily exposure to sunlight, pollution, dust, heat from cooking, irregular sleep, and emotional stress can damage skin at a deeper level. 'Antioxidants are natural or synthetic substances that neutralize free radicals—unstable molecules generated by UV rays, pollution, and stress. These molecules damage skin cells, speeding up signs of ageing like wrinkles, dullness, and pigmentation. Antioxidants are your skin's natural defense system, protecting it from daily environmental damage,' the dermatologist explained.
'Our melanin-rich skin offers some natural protection, but it also comes with concerns like hyperpigmentation, tanning, and uneven tone, especially in high heat and humidity. Indian skin is also more reactive to UV and pollution, making antioxidants a daily necessity, not just an optional extra,' the dermat highlighted.
Turmeric, amla, tulsi, neem, and green tea are rich in antioxidants and have long been used in home remedies for glowing skin. Today, dermatology combines these age-old ingredients with scientifically tested formulations like Vitamin C serums, glutathione supplements, antioxidant-rich gels, and IV drips designed specifically for Indian skin. Hyderabad cardiologist gets US patent for multi-functional cardiac occluder
File photo: Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti HYDERABAD: An innovative device that can fix various types of cardiac defects, designed by Hyderabad-based Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti, who heads the Cardiology Division at Rainbow Children's Heart Institute, has been granted a US patent. Called KONAR-MF Occluder, the multi-functional device can close septal defects in children and adults. It is a double umbrella disc device made of nitinol, a biocompatible nickel and titanium alloy, and is stretchable up to 15 mm. It can treat various conditions, including ventricular septal defects, coronary arteriovenous fistulas, and paravalvular leaks. The device has already been patented in India, Europe (European Commission), Euro-African countries, and South Korea. The multifunctional device not only fixes multiple types of cardiac lesions but also makes advanced cardiac care more affordable for patients in India, as it costs just Rs 50,000 in India compared to Rs 1.2 lakh in Pakistan and Rs 2.5–6 lakhs in other parts of Asia and Europe, said Dr Koneti. Terming this as a proud moment for Indian science, Dr Koneti said: "This US patent validates that innovations from India can meet global standards. It took us over six years to develop the device, and we applied for CE approval in 2018.' He said the US patent now paves the way for a US FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval for the device, which has already been implanted in about 10-15 patients in the US on compassionate grounds. "But we can also do clinical trials in the US if required," said Dr Koneti, who is a paediatric interventional cardiologist. He pointed out that the device has already demonstrated its safety and efficacy through over 20 peer-reviewed studies, and over 10,000 of these devices have already been implanted in patients in over 90 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa since the device got CE approval in 2018. Indian-origin pharma tycoon arrested in US for healthcare fraud
A US-based, Indian-origin pharma tycoon was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport over his involvement in a $149-million healthcare fraud. Tonmoy Sharma, 61, is the founder and former CEO of Sovereign Health Group — an addiction treatment provider — and is originally from Guwahati, who studied medicine at Dibrugarh Medical College and interned at the Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi, was arrested on May 29 on an eight-count federal grand jury indictment alleging he submitted more than $149 million in fraudulent claims to health insurers. As per US Attorney's Office, Central District of California, Sovereign Health Group fraudulently enrolled patients into insurance plans without their knowledge, using deceptive company billed insurers for unauthorised urinalysis tests, generating over $29 million in fraudulent claims.
