Simon Parker to make test debut as All Blacks make 5 changes for 2nd Argentina test

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — All Blacks coach Scott Robertson has made five changes to his squad for the second Rugby Championship test against Argentina on Saturday, handing backrower Simon Parker his test debut.
Parker's selection is the only change to the New Zealand starting XV. He comes in at No. 8 while Ardie Savea returns to his usual position on the openside flank.
There weree four changes on the bench, where prop Tamaiti Williams and backrower Wallace Sititi will make their returns from injury.
Lock Josh Lord and center Quinn Tupaea have been added to the reserves after injuries in the first test to Patrick Tuipulotu and Anton Lienert-Brown.
Parker's immediate promotion to the starting lineup is a minor surprise. Robertson was expected to select the more experienced Sititi to start and to introduce Parker from the bench. Williams also was expected to start but Robertson has decided to allow both Sititi and Williams to make more cautious returns from injury.
Robertson also will have been reasonably satisfied with the scrum performance of his starting pack in last weekend's 41-24 first test win at Cordoba.
While Parker will be playing his first test, hooker Codie Taylor will make his 100th test appearance, becoming the 14th All Blacks player to reach triple figures.
'Codie is a great All Black. He carries a huge amount of mana (status) in our group and it's important we put out a performance that makes him and his whānau (family) proud in his 100th test,' Robertson said.
'The way he carries himself and the example he sets are testament to him as a person and he will front this week in the same way he has for the past 99 tests.'
Parker has made an impression in Super Rugby this season as a big man who still possesses pace and skill.
He is 1.97 meters (6'4″) tall, weighs 119 kilograms (262 pounds) and the All Blacks selectors see him as a possible answer to the size of the World Cup champion Springboks, their opponents in the next stage of the Rugby Championship.
The Pumas made two starting changes for Saturday's match — Juan Martin Gonzalez is in for Marcos Kremer on the flank and Mateo Carreras replaced Rodrigo Isgro on the left wing, with Bautista Delguy swapping to the right wing.
Teams:
Argentina: Juan Cruz Mallia, Bautista Delguy, Lucio Cinti, Santiago Chocobares, Mateo Carreras, Tomás Albornoz, Gonzalo Garcia; Joaquin Oviedo, Juan Martin Gonzalez, Pablo Matera, Pedro Rubiolo, Franco Molina, Pedro Delgado, Julian Montoya (captain), Mayco Vivas. Annika Sorenstam shoots 70 to take 1st-round lead in the US Senior Women's Open

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (AP) — Annika Sorenstam shot a 3-under 70 on Thursday to take the first-round lead in the U.S. Senior Women's Open at San Diego Country Club. Sorenstam won the tournament in 2021 after winning U.S. Women's Open titles in 1995, '96 and 2006. The 54-year-old Swede won 72 times on the LPGA Tour. 'I'm very pleased with the first round,' Sorenstam said. 'I felt pretty solid from tee to green. I think I ended up in some good approach shots on the right side of the flag, which is very helpful on this course.' Moira Dunn-Bohls was a stroke back with amateur Lara Tennant and 72-year-old Barb Moxness, who bettered her age. Trish Johnson, the 2023 champion, was another stroke back at 72 with Corina Kelepouris. Karrie Webb had a 73 in her first career round in the event. 'All the nerves and anxiousness were definitely there, and it's sort of a course where I don't know if you ever really feel comfortable,' the 50-year-old Webb said. Juli Inkster had a 75. She made a 50-foot eagle putt on her first hole, the par-5 10th. ___ AP golf:

Walker and Diaz hit HRs, Sánchez goes 5 for 5 as Astros beat Orioles 7-2 to end 4-game skid

BALTIMORE (AP) — Christian Walker and Yainer Diaz homered, Jesús Sánchez ended a lengthy slump with five hits and the Houston Astros beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-2 Thursday night to snap a four-game losing streak. The Astros scored early and often against Baltimore rookie Brandon Young, who six days earlier in Houston had a perfect game ruined with two outs in the eighth inning. In the rematch, the AL West leaders built a 7-1 lead in the third and coasted. Walker hit a two-run homer in the first, Carlos Correa singled in two runs in the second and Diaz connected in the third with a runner on after Sánchez delivered an RBI single. Sánchez broke an 0-for-29 skid with a first-inning single and finished 5 for 5, his most productive day with Houston since being acquired from Miami in a July 31 trade. The five hits tied a career high. Young (1-7) gave up seven runs and nine hits before leaving with one out in the sixth after hurting his left hamstring while covering first base on a grounder. Jason Alexander (4-1) allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings for Houston. Since being claimed off waivers from the Athletics on May 18, the right-hander is 4-1 with a save in eight appearances. Dylan Beavers hit his first major league homer for Baltimore in the second inning and added a run-scoring groundout in the sixth. The Orioles had won three straight and six of seven. Key moment Walker's 17th home run with two outs in the first got the Astros rolling against Young, who yielded only one hit in Houston on Aug. 15. Akie Iwai leads CPKC Women's Open, days after first LPGA Tour victory

MISSISSAUGA, Ontario (AP) — Akie Iwai was right back on top of the leaderboard in the CPKC Women's Open on Thursday, four days after her breakthrough victory in the Portland Classic. Iwai closed her afternoon round at Mississaugua Golf and Country Club with birdies on the par-4 eighth and ninth holes for a 7-under 64 and a two-stroke lead. 'Last week I won, but already it's in the past, already past,' Iwai said. Fifteen-year-old Canadian amateur Aphrodite Deng was tied for second with top-ranked Jeeno Thitikul, Leona Maguire, Gaby Lopez and 2023 winner Megan Khang. On Sunday in Oregon, Iwai joined twin sister Chisato as a rookie LPGA Tour winner. The 23-year-old Japanese player had second-place finishes in Thailand in February and Los Angeles in April, then watched her sister win at Mayakoba in May in Mexico. She's playing in Canada for first time. 'Really beautiful course,' said Akie Iwai, a six-time winner on the JLPGA Tour. 'Looks like something similar in Japan course.' Chisato Iwai bogeyed Nos. 8 and 9 to shoot 75. Deng was born in Calgary, Alberta, and her family lived in Montreal before moving to New Jersey for her father's work. She mostly lives now in Orlando, Florida, but remains a Canadian citizen and plays for Golf Canada's junior program. 'Just trying to hit each shot and play in the fairway,' Deng said. Thitikul played her first round since taking the top spot in the world from Nelly Korda. 'I think just like another day at work for me,' Thitikul said. Korda opened with a 69. Slumping Canadian star Brooke Henderson had four birdies and four bogeys in a 71. The 2018 champion won the last of her 13 LPGA Tour titles in January 2023. 'Just grateful we were able to get it back to even,' Henderson said. She played alongside Thitikul and Women's Scottish Open winner Lottie Woad, who shot 75. Defending champion Lauren Coughlin had a 74. She won last year in Calgary. ___ AP golf:
