India-US trade pact likely to miss 'Fall' deadline, New Delhi seeks clarity on Trump's policy
As Indian and the US trade representatives negotiate the initial trenches of a bilateral trade agreement. Here's the reason why both nations might miss the fall deadline in finalising a deal read more
While India and the United States work towards finalising the initial aspects of a bilateral trade deal , reports are emerging that both nations will likely miss the fall deadline in finalising an agreement. Sources close to the matter told The Times of India that New Delhi is seeking clarity from the US President Donald Trump's administration on its trade policy.
While the two nations are finalising an 'initial tranche' of the proposed trade deal before July 9, Washington, DC, is yet to give clarity on its trade policy beyond the Trump tariffs. 'A long-lasting agreement will require the US to move beyond a case-by-case approach, which can form the basis for a durable agreement,' the source told The Times of India.
STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD
The source stated that New Delhi is seeking clarity on how the tariff cuts committed by the US Trade Representative will be implemented, since there is no clarity on whether the move would require approval from the US Congress. India is also monitoring the legal challenges to Trump's reciprocal tariffs, which have created 'uncertainties on how the duty cuts will be negotiated.'
Three factors India will be looking at
The two nations started discussing a bilateral trade agreement following the meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February. Following the talks, it was announced that the two nations had agreed to negotiate a bilateral trade deal by the Fall before the US President decided to roll out reciprocal tariffs on April 2, which was suspended later.
Meanwhile, it is pertinent to note that the American trade deals with the United Kingdom and China are also interim and are not final agreements . The source told TOI that New Delhi will be looking at the following three key factors while negotiating a deal with the Trump administration:
New Delhi 'wants to secure the best possible deal for its businesses so that they can get market access in return for lower duties in India,' a source told TOI. The source argued that an agreement would give American companies access to a market of close to 1.5 billion people.
The Indian government will also be looking at how tariffs are being reset for other countries to determine its next move forward.
The government would seek protection in several segments, such as agriculture and segments like staples are fully on board.
The source concluded that while the current negotiation is focusing on goods trade, India's interests in the service sector are not getting addressed at the moment.

'Explosions across Tehran': Visuals capture Israel's preemptive strike on Iran; watch video
Visuals from Iran showed smoke billowing from multiple areas in Iran early on Friday as Israel launched an attack, with explosions resonating throughout Tehran. The strikes targeted nuclear and military installations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tehran residents woke to explosions. State television acknowledged the incident. Smoke was visible near Chitgar, western Tehran. No known nuclear facilities exist there, with situation unclear elsewhere. While there is still uncertainty surrounding the extent of damage, Iran's primary nuclear enrichment facility was reportedly targetted at Natanz. The Natanz facility consists of both above-ground and underground sections, housing numerous centrifuge halls for uranium gas enrichment in its nuclear programme. Israeli Prime Minister confirmed Israel's responsibility for Friday's attack on the site. Natanz has previously experienced the Stuxnet cyberattack and several suspected Israeli sabotage operations. Iranian state television reports suggest the leader of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Gen. Hossein Salami may have perished in the Israeli strike. The broadcast indicated that another senior Guard official and two nuclear scientists were also possibly deceased. State television reported the attack ignited the Revolutionary Guard headquarters. Netanyahu confirmed multiple targets in the capital, including nuclear and military installations, along with officials overseeing Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. This escalation follows mounting tensions regarding Iran's nuclear programme advancement. The International Atomic Energy Agency's Board of Governors censured Iran on Thursday, their first such action in 20 years, regarding cooperation with inspectors. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Iran responded by announcing plans for a third enrichment facility and upgrading centrifuges. Israel has consistently opposed Iran developing nuclear weapons, which Tehran maintains it does not intend to do, despite officials suggesting capability. The US has taken precautionary measures, withdrawing some diplomats from Iraq and offering evacuation options to US military families in the region. Netanyahu stated via YouTube that operations would continue "for as many days at it takes to remove this threat." US secretary of state Marco Rubio confirmed Israel's independent action, noting they deemed it necessary for self-defence. "We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region," Rubio's White House statement declared. Rubio cautioned Iran against targeting US interests or personnel. Brent crude prices increased nearly 5% following the attack. Israel's Defence Minister Israel Katz acknowledged the operation without specifying targets. "In the wake of the state of Israel's preventive attack against Iran, missile and drone attacks against Israel and its civilian population are expected immediately," his statement read. Katz "signed a special order declaring an emergency situation in the home front." "It is essential to listen to instructions from the home front command and authorities to stay in protected areas," it continued. Both nations closed their airspace. During the Tehran explosions, President Donald Trump socialised with Congress members at the White House. His awareness remained unclear as he continued greeting guests. Trump had previously urged Netanyahu to delay action while diplomatic negotiations continued. "As long as I think there is a (chance for an) agreement, I don't want them going in because I think it would blow it," Trump told reporters.

PM Modi Visits Air India Plane Crash Site, Meets Injured At Ahmedabad Hospital
Last Updated: PM Modi visited the crash site in the Meghaninagar area and Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to take stock of situation. Ahmedabad Flight Crash: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday reached Ahmedabad to take stock of situation after London-bound Air India flight, AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (registration VT-ANB), crashed minutes after taking off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, killing at least 265 individuals. After reaching the airport, the Prime Minister, accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, visited the crash site in the Meghaninagar area and Ahmedabad Civil Hospital to take stock of situation. PM Modi earlier said he was 'stunned" by the tragedy. 'It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected," he said on X on Thursday. On Thursday Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu had visited the site to take stock of the situation. The Centre has formed a high-level committee to probe the crash, Kinjarapu said. Ahmedabad Plane Crash India witnessed one of its worst aviation tragedies on Thursday after a London-bound Air India plane, carrying 242 passengers and crew, including former Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani, crashed into a medical college complex shortly after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport. In an early morning post on X at 12.41am on Friday, Air India confirmed that 241 people had perished in the crash. A police official told news agency PTI that 265 bodies had been brought to the hospital. The plane had crashed into the mess area of a medical college hostel, causing what appears to be at lease two dozen fatalities on the ground. At around 1:38 pm, videos of the aircraft showed it flying low over a residential area and struggling to gain altitude. Within minutes, it hits the ground and explodes in a massive ball of fire. What seems to have compounded the impact was the fact that the airliner was loaded with aviation fuel since it was set to fly all the way to London. Officials said the flight lost altitude soon after taking off at around 1.30pm, before crashing into the residential quarters of BJ Medical College doctors in Meghaninagar area and going up in flames, sending plumes of thick black smoke spiralling up in the air. One person survived the tragedy. The lone survivor was identified as Indian-origin British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh who was returning to the UK with his brother Ajay Kumar Rakesh, 45, who was in a different row inside the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The aircraft had 232 passengers and 10 crew members, including 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese and a Canadian, on board. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) in a statement said the aircraft piloted by captain Sumeet Sabharwal with 8,200 hours of experience and first officer Clive Kundar with 1,100 hours of experience made a mayday call just before the crash.
