Mumbai at 6th place among 97 cities globally in under-construction data centre capacity: report
Virginia is in first position with 1,834 MW data centre capacity under construction, followed by Atlanta (1,078 MW), Columbus (546 MW), Dallas (500 MW) and Phoenix (478 MW).
Mumbai ranks 6th globally in under-construction data centre capacity.
"At the end of 2024, the city had 335 MW of data centre capacity under construction, which, once completed, will expand its operational capacity by 62 per cent," real estate consultant Cushman & Wakefield (C&W) said.
Austin/San Antonio ranks 7th (325MW), Reno 8th (305MW), London 9th (265MW) and Dublin (249 MW), according to C&W's latest 'Global Data Center Market Comparison' report 2025.
The report, covering 97 global markets, attributes this growth to surging demand fuelled by the expansion of cloud computing and AI workloads.
Key factors shaping data centre development include power availability, land access, and supporting infrastructure.
"Mumbai leads the APAC region with 335 MW of data centre capacity under construction and ranks among the top 10 global markets by this metric. Once completed, this will expand the city's operational market size by 62 per cent," Gautam Saraf, Executive Managing Director - Mumbai & New Business, India at Cushman & Wakefield, said.
He noted that several factors are driving this momentum - a strong digital backbone, a reliable power supply, and sustained demand from hyperscalers.
"As India's financial capital and economic hub, Mumbai already accounts for over half of the country's data centre capacity and continues to attract major global operators," Saraf said.
Key enablers include 12 cable landing stations, the recent MIST cable landing, and a robust pipeline of upcoming infrastructure, he said.
"While challenges around land availability and power persist in certain locations, the city's long-term fundamentals remain highly compelling for sustained growth," Saraf said.

Mercedes-Benz sees its ultra-luxury cars driving growth amid market volatility
The luxury car market in India has been growing at a gradual pace. At a time when the mass-market segment of the Indian passenger vehicle market has been witnessing sluggish growth owing to various factors such as increased pricing, higher cost of maintenance, rising inflation, economic uncertainty due to geopolitical tensions, tariff blow, etc., the luxury car market has been witnessing continuous growth. What Mercedes-Benz India has revealed is even more interesting. The German luxury car marque has claimed that the company is recording its top-end ultra-luxury car portfolio, continuing to drive growth for the brand in a volatile market condition. The automaker has revealed this while launching its latest product, Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Coupe in India at ₹1.35 crore (ex-showroom). In an interaction with PTI, Mercedes-Benz India MD and CEO Santosh Iyer said that with this growth momentum for the luxury cars in India, the segment is pegged to grow at around four to five per cent on a year-on-year basis. However, he also revealed that despite this growth projection, the demand is flattish as compared to last year for the industry. "Considering all the geopolitical developments happening around us, the growth may not be there as much as what we have seen in the previous years, but it is still there," Iyer stated. Top-end models driving growth for Mercedes-Benz For Mercedes-Benz, the top-end cars and core segments continue to grow while the entry-level vertical has de-grown, Iyer noted. He said that with eight launches in 2025, the OEM's top-end luxury vehicle strategy has been very successful, garnering immense customer response and elevating the desirability of Mercedes-Benz in the market. "So yes, we are not seeing that double-digit kind of growth momentum that we saw in the previous year, but still, flattish to single-digit growth is there," he added. The Mercedes-Benz India official also noted that while there are some headwinds, the industry is also witnessing some tailwinds, which augur well for the growth in the coming quarters. Iyer cited GDP growth projections and record GST collections this year as some of the positive factors. "Obviously, macros are strong, and they should not affect the fundamental position. But yeah, it's a volatile market, for sure," he added. Mercedes-Benz eyes festive season to boost sales The festive season is considered one of the most prosperous times of the year when the auto industry in India across all segments witnesses significant growth. This year, after recording muted sales in the first half of the year, the auto industry is expecting to see a turnaround in the sales performance during the upcoming festive season, which is about to start in a few weeks. Mercedes-Benz is no different. The luxury car company is expecting a better sales momentum with the onset of the festive season. Check out Upcoming Cars in India 2025, Best SUVs in India. India bit recalcitrant on trade negotiations: US Treasury Secy Bessent
Last Updated: New York, Aug 13 (PTI) India has been a 'bit recalcitrant" on trade negotiations with the US, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said. 'That's aspirational," Bessent said on Fox Business on Tuesday, responding to a question on wrapping up all the tariffs and trade deals by the end of October. 'But I think we are in a good position. The big trade deals that aren't done or aren't agreed – Switzerland is still around, India has been a bit recalcitrant," he said, adding that US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and teams of lawyers 'are busy papering all this over". 'So I think we will have agreed on substantial terms with all the substantial countries. And as I've been saying for a long time, the President's (Donald Trump) doing peace deals, trade deals, tax deals," he added. Even as trade negotiations between India and the US were ongoing, Trump imposed tariffs totalling 50 per cent on India, including 25 per cent for Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, which will come into effect from August 27. Responding to the tariffs, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has said that the targeting of India is 'unjustified and unreasonable". 'Like any major economy, India will take all necessary measures to safeguard its national interests and economic security," it said. Last week's announcement of Trump's executive order imposing the additional 25 per cent tariffs on India came at a time when a team from the US is scheduled to visit India from August 25 for the sixth round of negotiations for the proposed bilateral trade agreement. The two countries are aiming to conclude the first phase of the pact by fall (October-November) this year.
