Kerala Nuns Get Bail In Chhattisgarh 'Conversion, Trafficking' Case

Last Updated: After reviewing the evidence and arguments, the NIA court found grounds to grant conditional bail A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, has granted conditional bail to Sister Sujata and Sister Anisha, two Catholic nuns from Kerala, along with Santosh Baghel, a tribal youth from Chhattisgarh. Their arrest had previously sparked controversy and allegations of political grandstanding, particularly surrounding issues of religious conversions and communal tensions in the region. The trio was apprehended in mid-July following complaints of forced religious conversions among tribal communities in Chhattisgarh's Bastar region. The case, filed under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), prompted outrage from Christian organisations and human rights activists, who argued that the arrests were baseless and politically motivated. Critics claimed that certain factions were exploiting controversial anti-conversion laws to target missionaries and tribal individuals. After reviewing the evidence and arguments, the NIA court found grounds to grant conditional bail. Although the specific conditions were not immediately disclosed, they typically include restrictions such as not leaving the district without court permission, cooperating with the investigation, and avoiding tampering with evidence or influencing witnesses. The granting of bail indicates that the court did not find sufficient prima facie evidence to justify their continued incarceration for terror-related offences or recognised the potential for undue hardship due to the nature of the accusations. Conditional bail was granted to three people in the case, defence lawyer Amrito Das confirmed, according to a report by PTI. Speaking with the news agency, petitioner's advocate B Gopakumar said some bail conditions were also put up, including that, 'they will not be able to go abroad, they will have to surrender the passport, they should not influence the witness." view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Allahabad HC directs GDA to maintain status quo on demolition notice

Prayagraj(UP), Aug 2 (PTI) The Allahabad High Court has directed that status quo be maintained with regards to the demolition notices issued by Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) over alleged illegal properties built on public land. Hearing a writ petition, a division bench comprising Justice Mahesh Chandra Tripathi and Justice Prashant Kumar granted time to the district administration and GDA to place on record how they intend to rehabilitate the old inhabitants of the properties. The court also restrained the petitioners from creating any third-party interests or undertaking any development on the disputed property. The court also observed, 'In the facts and circumstances of the case, we also find that it is not in dispute that the petitioners have been occupying the place for the last 40-50 years." 'At this stage, we find that some indulgence and reprieve is to be accorded to the inhabitants who belong to the weaker sections of society and we further direct the authorities to ensure the formulation and implementation of a rehabilitation scheme for such persons," it said. The bench said the rehabilitation scheme shall be provided by the district administration and the GDA in the next hearing. The next hearing is listed for August 22. The petitioners filed the present writ petition for quashing the demolition notice dated June 16, 2025, issued by the GDA under section 26-A of the UP Urban Planning and Development Act, 1973. The GDA initially issued notice to 172 illegal occupants of public land on September 6, 2024, which is earmarked in the master plan. Consequently, 89 persons filed their objections which were considered and the impugned order (order under challenge) was passed. During the course of hearing, the counsel for the petitioner submitted that the petitioners are old inhabitants and in absence of any rehabilitation scheme as per the law, the old inhabitants, who are occupying small pieces of land for their shelter and admittedly belong to the lower sections of society, will suffer irreparable loss, if uprooted. After hearing both sides, the court in its order dated July 31 passed the above directives and observed, 'It is informed that in response to the earlier court's order, till date the GDA has not taken any remedial measures to rehabilitate the persons who were in illegal occupation for the last 40 years." Shop owner shot at by former tenant in southeast Delhi

Agency: New Delhi, Aug 2 (PTI) A shop owner was shot at by a group of men in southeast Delhi's Nizamuddin area, police said on Saturday, adding that they have made two arrests in the case. After being hit with bullets on Friday, he was immediately rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre, where he is undergoing treatment, an officer said. A former tenant allegedly opened fire outside Qibla Perfumes, which is run by Furkan (32), and his two brothers, Waseem (33) and Abdul Khalid (30), police said. According to officials, the victim and his brothers had recently asked Ehsaan to vacate a shop he had rented. He complied about 15 days ago, and the firing is suspected to be related to that dispute. A PCR call regarding the firing was received at the Nizamuddin police station at 10.08 pm on Friday. Preliminary inquiry revealed that around 10 pm, their former tenant, Ehsaan, arrived at the shop along with a few associates and began a quarrel with Waseem, police said. During the altercation, one of the accused pulled out a firearm and fired three rounds. Furkan suffered an injury to his leg during the incident. 'A case was registered under sections 109(1) (attempt to murder) and 3(5) (joint liability) of the BNS and relevant sections of the Arms Act on August 2 has been registered and investigation has been taken up," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari said. He added that two accused have been apprehended and one of these two has fired upon the victim as confirmed by the CCTV footage. 'None of these two have any previous involvement. Few other accused are still at large. Efforts are underway to apprehend them," the officer said. An inspection of the crime scene led to the recovery of three empty cartridges and two live rounds, police said.
