McCabe and Arsenal crowned continental queens after dethroning Barca

Irish Examiner24-05-2025

UEFA Women's Champions League Final: Arsenal 1 Barcelona 0
Katie McCabe and Arsenal bridged 18 years of history to seal a sensational Champions League triumph as the Ireland captain and her side dethroned Barcelona in a nail-biting final in Lisbon.
Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius climbed off the bench to strike the only game in a tense, tight affair at Estadio Jose Alvalade as the Gunners became the continent's queens for the first time since 2007.
"I'm over the...over the...I can't even speak!" said McCabe, the Tricolour draped across her shoulders, after 90-plus energy-sapping minutes on the left side of a resilient defence."It's an unbelievable feeling. We suffered today. Barcelona are an unbelievable team but we stuck together and ground it out. Stina got that moment and put it away. I dunno when it will sink in but there's gonna be a party tonight. I'll tell ya that!"

‘This must be a first?' – Ireland fans puzzled by RTE's scaled back coverage for Luxembourg friendly

LUXEMBOURG vs Ireland was an instantly forgettable match with about the only standout aspect to it being RTE's scaled back coverage. There was no studio coverage before, during or after 2 In the second half Troy Parrott scored with a delicate chip but it was ruled out for offside 2 Some viewers also reported the sound was out of sync with the picture on their TVs Curran and Whelan were on commentary and also filled the half-time break by narrating 'highlights' of what chances were created by both sides. O'Donoghue was at least present in the stadium as he conducted interviews with Heimir Hallgrimsson, Player of the Match But the main talking point generated throughout the entire evening was that there were no pundits in studio talking things over. Among the tweets posted on X about the significant break from the norm, Indo Sport podcast host Joe Molloy posted: "No RTE studio panel for the match?" Niall Bergin posited: "Surely cost-cutting from RTE but Most read in Football Finally, someone else pondered: "This must be a first?" However, others didn't think it was that egregious of a decision given last night was about as close to a meaningless international game as you're ever going to see. Inside Arsenal's Ibiza holiday as Katie McCabe and teammates pop champagne to celebrate Champions League win Mick Finn argued: "A meaningless, nothing game…lucky to have it shown." Lastly, one fan used what a dreadfully poor spectacle it was to crack an amusing gag. He quipped: "Is it possible they had one and they just all fell asleep? Understandable enough." HEIMIR HUFF Head coach Hallgrimsson The birthday boy admitted: 'Let's be honest, we're not happy with this performance. 'It's good to keep a clean sheet but we all felt that in the first half we were sloppy, the game was boring in the first half. "All the good things we did against Senegal were missing, all the quick movement, the press, the ball speed - so sloppy. 'We were so different from all the things we want to represent. We lost duels, we lost ball, our rotations were slow, our pressing was more individual than collective. 'It was not tactical, I think it was just focus. We were not doing the things we did four days ago. 'We changed in the second half, we had more tempo, and won more duels. 'But it was not good enough. We always like answers to questions and this one is a negative one, so we at least know that. Copy link Copied By Newcastle move for Trafford Newcastle hope to finalise a £30million deal to sign James Trafford after re-opening talks with Burnley. The 22-year-old goalkeeper saw a £16m switch to St James' Park collapse last summer but has remained Eddie Howe's top target. Ex-Manchester City stopper Trafford stayed at Turf Moor and enjoyed an incredible campaign as his 29 clean sheets helped the Clarets seal an instant return to the Premier League. Despite that promotion, the England international still wants the move as much as the Magpies. SunSport understands that representatives from both clubs are now in discussions and Howe is hopeful he can finally land his man. Trafford told Ben Foster's Fozcast podcast last week how he missed out on a 'brilliant' move 12 months ago but had no problem staying with Scott Parker's team once it failed to happen. Copy link Copied By Maignan talks halt Chelsea have halted talks over a deal to sign Mike Maignan but will continue pursuing Jamie Gittens. The Blues had hoped to land both in time for the Club World Cup, which starts next week, but deals will not be agreed in time. Chelsea are not willing to meet AC Milan's asking price of more than £20million for Maignan given he has just a year left on his deal. Their latest proposal was for a fee of around £12m. Maignan has made his desire to move to Stamford Bridge clear, telling Milan he will not renew his deal. Chelsea opened talks after being alerted to Maignan's desire to move, but refuse to budge on their valuation. There remains the chance that negotiations could pick up again later in the window if Milan's asking price comes down. Failing that, from January Chelsea could hold pre-contract talks over a free transfer next summer. The possibility of Djordje Petrovic going the other way as part of a deal has been discussed. Copy link Copied By Spurs close to Frank Tottenham are close to sealing a deal with Brentford for manager Thomas Frank. That is according to Sky Sports, who claim Spurs are getting nearer to agreeing compensation with the Bees. There is still the future of several of Frank's backroom staff members to be finalised. But further progress is expected on Wednesday and the hope is a move can be concluded before the end of the week. Copy link Copied By First transfer window explained This unusual two-part summer transfer window has seen its first half come to an end. The reason this year's summer market is different is the revamped Club World Cup, which will begin this coming Sunday. To accommodate clubs wanting to sign players ahead of the controversial tournament, the transfer window opened early on June 1. But due to FIFA's rules stipulating the transfer windows in a calendar year when combined cannot be greater than 16 weeks, a break had to be inserted - therefore the first window closed tonight at 7pm BST. The initial 10-day period applied only to the 20 national associations with teams playing in the Club World Cup to allow them to register players for the group stages of the competition. That includes England, with Manchester City and Chelsea set to compete in the tournament. The summer transfer window reopens on June 16 and will remain open until September 1. Teams participating in the Club World Cup who sign players from this date can register them for the knockout stages of the competition. Copy link Copied By Cherki deal sealed Manchester City announced the signing of Rayan Cherki from Lyon in a £34m deal. Cherki put pen to paper on a five-year contract and will play for City in the Club World Cup. This is a dream for me. Honestly, to be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special. I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff. Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace. I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future. I can't wait to show City fans what I can do. Rayan Cherki Copy link Copied By Summer transfer window shut The first period of the summer transfer window has officially closed! Meanwhile Tijjani Reijnders' £46m switch from Milan kicked off the Citizens' summer spree and will be announced on Wednesday. The deal was all agreed ahead of transfer deadline but he was on international duty with the Netherlands. That will take manager Pep Guardiola's spending to around £107m so far this summer.
