De Bruyne signs with Serie A champion Napoli after 10 seasons at Man City
NAPLES, Italy (AP) — Two-time Premier League player of the season Kevin De Bruyne signed as a free agent with Serie A champion Napoli on Thursday.
'KING KEV IS HERE,' Napoli declared in a series of posts on X.
The 33-year-old De Bruyne's contract at Manchester City expired. Napoli did not announce the length of his new contract.
Around 150 fans welcomed De Bruyne on his arrival at a clinic in Rome for his medical. They chanted his name before also singing about Napoli being champion after the player had gone into the facility.
At Napoli, De Bruyne will reunite with Belgium teammate Romelu Lukaku. And follow in the footsteps of former Napoli great Dries Mertens, an ex-Belgium international.
In Napoli's midfield, De Bruyne can team with Serie A player of the year Scott McTominay, who made a highly successful move from Manchester United.

Known as one of soccer's most complete midfielders, De Bruyne was named the best player in the Premier League for the 2019-2020 and 2021-22 seasons.
In 10 seasons at City, he helped the English club to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and a Champions League trophy.
The addition of De Bruyne may have been one of the reasons that convinced Napoli coach Antonio Conte to stay on for another season after considering rejoining Juventus.

Mexican FA accused of silencing clubs seeking promotion reinstatement
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Two Mexican clubs seeking to reinstate promotion and relegation say the Mexican Football Association is trying to silence and punish them after they appealed to sport's highest court. Last month, 10 of the 15 clubs in Mexico's second division filed the appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Since then, four of them have opted out leaving six in it: Leones Negros, Venados FC, Atlético Morelia, Cancún FC, Club Atlético La Paz and Mineros. The FMF halted promotion in 2019 and agreed with the second division teams to reinstate it in 2026, but there are no current plans to do it and that is why the clubs went to CAS. 'We can't ascend to the first division because the league is kidnapped,' Giovanni Solazzi, the Cancún FC vice president said this week. 'If there is sporting justice, promotion must return.' Alberto Castellanos, the Leones Negros president, also criticized the federation for what he called 'monopolistic practices.' On Wednesday, the federation wrote to Solazzi and Castellanos informing them they were being investigated because their statements may have breached the code of ethics. The clubs could be fined up to 450,000 pesos (about $23,000), stated the letter, seen by the Associated Press. 'The FMF is clearly pursuing an intimidatory process intended to silence and punish the clubs for appealing to CAS,' said Eduardo Carlezzo, the owner of the legal firm representing the clubs in the appeal. The owners of the 18 top flight teams voted to halt promotion and relegation for six seasons, arguing it would help to consolidate the second-division clubs. As a payoff, the second tier clubs share an $8 million pot. Since the CAS appeal, the second division teams claim they have not received any payments. 'The federation suspended the financial compensation the day after the appeal was launched and is now threatening disciplinary sanction over comment,' Carlezzo said. 'These actions constitute a serious and blatant infringement of the freedom of expression and the access to justice guaranteed by the Mexican constitution.' ___ AP soccer:

Belmont Stakes to be run at Saratoga Race Course again in 2026, a third time in a row
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) — The Belmont Stakes is set to be run at Saratoga Race Course in upstate New York for a third consecutive year in 2026. Gov. Kathy Hochul and the New York Racing Association announced Friday that it will be the third and last time the Triple Crown finale is held there before returning to Belmont Park on Long Island in 2027. 'Saratoga has served our fans and stakeholders extremely well as the temporary home of the Belmont Stakes during the construction of a new Belmont Park on Long Island,' NYRA president and CEO David O'Rourke said. 'Belmont Park will always be the home of the Belmont Stakes and we look forward to its return to the newly reimagined Belmont in 2027.' It was confirmation of an expected extension of the race's stay at Saratoga while Belmont Park undergoes nearly a half-billion dollar renovation project. It is on track to reopen in September 2026, with the Breeders' Cup returning to New York at Belmont Park in the fall of 2027. The Belmont will again be run at 1 1/4 miles instead of its traditional 1-1/2 mile distance that has been known as the 'test of the champion.' That has been the case the past two years, as well, because of the configuration of the main dirt track. ___ AP horse racing:

Surge in viewers leads ION TV to extend current 3-year broadcasting deal with WNBA
NEW YORK (AP) — Caitlin Clark's arrival and a major surge in viewers over the past year led to ION Television reaching a multiyear agreement on Friday to extend its broadcasting partnership with the WNBA. ION, which is owned by the Cincinnati, Ohio-based, E.W. Scripps Company, did not reveal the length or value of the contract, which extends the network's original deal reached in 2023 to broadcast regular-season games and host a weekly studio show. The existing three-year deal is worth $13 million per season. In a release, ION said the average viewership for its WNBA Friday Night Spotlight show increased by 133% from 2023 to '24, and attracted more than 23 million unique viewers, including game coverage. The jump coincides with Clark's celebrated rookie season in Indiana last year. The network reaches more than 128 million homes though its various platforms. Last year, the WNBA struck an 11-year media rights deal with Disney, Amazon Prime and NBC that begins in 2026 and is worth about $200 million a year. ___ AP WNBA:
