On this day: York-born pool player Donna Smith wins national contest
On this day in 2024, the York Press reported that a York-born pool player had made it back-to-back victories on the national stage.
Donna Smith, representing Scotland internationally through her mother's nationality, defended her Scottish Open title with a 6-5 win over Karen Mowat, following 2023's final victory over Jacqueline Louth.
Ms Smith said: "I'm super happy to defend the open title - I've got a spot next year to go play in the women's tournament at a Scottish event.
"It's my second major title.
"It's taken hours and hours of practice whilst playing in local leagues; spare time on the weekends too going and practicing."
"I wasn't expecting it at all, but it just goes to show all of the hard work that I have put in and that everything I've done over the last 18 months has been worth it.
"To win the title and secure that spot, at the Scotland National Ladies for next year - it's everything and more really."

"I would love to do it, hopefully I can play my game tomorrow and I can do it. I'll just try to play one shot at a time and get that mindset from the start, and what will be will be." The 1% Club returned tonight (June 7) with a special episode for Soccer Aid. Comedian Lee Mack returned to present the show but this time he was joined by 100 celebrities and sports stars as opposed to the general public. They were put to the test in the quiz where 'the questions have nothing to do with remembering facts, but are all about logic and common sense', explains the Radio Times. The aim of the game was to make it to the end, answering the 1% question correctly to take home up to £100,000 for charity and they were successful. It's the 1% question... Three Lions, two words. Carlisle has also previously been named Britain's Brainiest Footballer. The prize fund included £1,000 from celebrities who were out of the show, having answered a question incorrectly. Each player gets one pass which they can use to help them skip a question but once they have used it, an incorrect answer takes them out of the game. If they make it to the 1% question, they are asked to go down to the stage for the final question where they see if they are winners. Pro Football Focus ranks Texas A&M's 2025 linebacker unit in the Top 10 nationally One of the strengths of Texas A&M's 2025 roster is finally being recognized this offseason, and credit to Pro Football Focus for being one of the first outlets to rank the entire Aggie linebacker corps as one of the top ten units nationally. Coming in at No. 6 in PFF's Top 10 college linebacker units, Texas A&M came in at No. 6 as Notre Dame (No. 5), Georgia (No. 4), Notre Dame (No. 3), LSU (No. 2) and Texas at No. 1 are the only teams considered "better" overall. After previewing the unit last month, I have been very high on the group since the start of the offseason, knowing that junior Taurean York and senior Scooby Williams will be leading the way. Still, the depth is even intriguing with junior Daymon Sanford, Tristan Jernigan, and Jordan Lockhart all bringing their strengths to the middle of the defense. According to the author, PFF analyst Max Chadwick has Taurean York as his second-ranked linebacker in all of college football, noting that his nation-leading 59 run-defense stops, combined with his improvement in coverage, make him a top 2026 NFL Draft prospect with enormous potential. While Chadwick did not mention Jernigan or Lockhart, who will likely receive the least snaps between York, Williams, and Sanford, he did point out freshman LB Noah Mickhail, whose role in 2025 is unknown, but his skill is undeniable. "Scooby Williams is back for his redshirt senior campaign after starting next to York last season. His 82.0 run-defense grade was 11th among SEC linebackers. Daymion Sanford also returns and was fourth among SEC linebackers with a 64.1 passer rating allowed in coverage. Noah Mickhail also enters College Station as the No. 9 linebacker recruit from the 2025 cycle." Having two elite run-stoppers with York and Williams, combined with Sanford's elevated pass coverage, provides coach Mike Elko and his defensive staff plenty of leeway to get Mickhail on the field early in the season to test his readiness. Texas A&M's defense, outside of some depth issues at defensive tackle, is on track to be one of the top defenses in the SEC.
