Pakistan: Asim Munir to visit US a second time in 2 months

Time of India2 days ago
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, is set to visit the United States for the second time in two months, a move that underscores the growing military alignment between Islamabad and Washington yet also highlights the intensifying political divisions Munir faces at home and abroad.
He is expected to attend the farewell ceremony of US Central Command (Centcom) commander General Michael E Kurilla in Tampa, Florida this week. The visit follows Kurilla's own trip to Pakistan in July during which he was awarded the Nishan-e-Imtiaz (Military), one of the country's top honours, for strengthening defence ties.
This renewed military engagement reflects a strategic recalibration after years of tension.
In June, Munir made headlines for being hosted at a private White House lunch by US President Donald Trump, an unprecedented gesture for a Pakistani military chief, notably unaccompanied by any civilian leaders. Trump publicly credited Munir with defusing a crisis with India following the Pahalgam terror attack, and even claimed the general helped 'avert a nuclear war'.
New Delhi maintains that the cessation of hostilities was on account of an understanding between India and Pakistan to stop military action.

However, Munir's engagements in the US have not gone unchallenged. On Aug 5, coordinated protests erupted in multiple US and European cities on the call of imprisoned former PM Imran Khan, demanding his release and condemning the military's role in the post-May 9, 2023 crackdown. The demonstrations – organized largely by the Pakistani diaspora and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chapters – signaled Khan's continued influence despite being behind bars.
These protests followed similar scenes in June during Munir's previous US visit. Outside Washington's Four Seasons Hotel, demonstrators shouted slogans such as 'mass murderer' and 'dictator', while a digital billboard in New York's Times Square branded Munir a 'fraud' and 'liar'. PTI supporters accuse the military of orchestrating a 'civilian façade' to mask what they call outright military rule.
Despite mounting protests and international scrutiny, Washington appears eager to re-engage with Pakistan's military.
At a congressional hearing in June, Gen Kurilla praised Pakistan as a 'phenomenal partner' in counterterrorism, citing cooperation in capturing five ISIS-Khorasan operatives using US intelligence. The Trump administration sees Pakistan's military as a critical player amid regional instability, especially as tensions flare in the Middle East and China expands its footprint across South and Central Asia.
Pakistan is also offering a broader strategic package.
Proposals reportedly include duty-free access for rare earth minerals, cooperation in emerging tech and cryptocurrency regulation, and expanded trade ties — all of which enhance the military's leverage in shaping foreign policy and economic outreach.
But Munir's growing international profile has reignited debate over Pakistan's internal power structure. Critics say his high-level US engagements, while excluding civilian representatives, reinforce the military's dominance over national decision-making.
With Khan silenced and democratic space shrinking, many fear a deepening authoritarian trajectory.
Online opinion remains sharply polarised. Some hail Munir's diplomatic overtures as pragmatic and strategic, while others decry the US for legitimising what they see as military overreach. 'A slap in the face to democracy,' one PTI supporter posted.
As Munir heads to Tampa, he faces a dual test: to solidify Pakistan's global standing while fending off mounting domestic and diaspora opposition. For now, the military's control remains unshaken — but so does the resistance.

Cut import, increase exports to become ‘vishwaguru': Gadkari

1 2 3 Nagpur: Without directly referring to the ongoing US tariff imposition, Union minister Nitin Gadkari on Saturday said that reducing imports and boosting exports is the biggest patriotism today if India wants to become a 'vishwaguru'. Speaking during the Prof VG Bhide memorial lecture at VNIT, Gadkari stressed that science and technology hold solutions to the country's major problems under the present circumstances. "Knowledge is power. Duniya jhukti hai, jhukane wala chahiye (The world bows, you need someone to make it bow)," he said. "If our scientists and institutions work as per the needs of the country, then the rate of our growth and development will increase thrice. When our economic growth rate and export increases, I don't think we will need anyone's support. Today, those who are bullying others can do so because they are economically self-reliant, and technologically sound. But when we have better technology and resources, we wouldn't indulge in bullying others. Our tradition teaches welfare of the world 'vishwa kalyan'," he said. Paying tribute to Prof Bhide as a good teacher and researcher, Gadkari urged IITs and NITs to focus research on the needs of the nation and find solutions tailored for each state, district, and city. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These Are The Most Beautiful Women In The World Undo He cited how in Delhi, 80 lakh tonnes of garbage from four dumps was used to make roads. He emphasised the importance of ethics, economy, and ecology, adding that technology should be used in Swachh Bharat to create value from waste. Recalling a remark by former RSS chief late KS Sudarshan, Gadkari said the import of fossil fuels must end to curb global terrorism. India spends Rs 21 lakh crore annually on importing fossil fuels, but farmers can help reduce this dependency. He pointed to the rise in corn prices after ethanol production began — from Rs 1,800 per quintal (MSP) to Rs 2,800 — and said corn plantation has tripled. He also cited progress in bio-ethanol, isobutanol (as an alternative to diesel), and bio-aviation fuel from rice straw, with the govt financing marine engine production by Kirloskar. Calling for indigenous technology, Gadkari said Bhide's research remains a guiding light. He lamented that research centres have not worked enough on hyperlocal problems but praised VNIT's ongoing work. Sharing an example from Covid times, he said a unit to treat black fungus-related blindness was set up in Wardha after he intervened for licensing. Gadkari added that the New Education Policy has incorporated science with values and culture, and called for a futuristic vision, futuristic implementation, and a self-reliant society in the coming years. Dalit women survivors seek separate law for caste crimes

1 2 Madurai: Dalit women survivors of caste violence, especially murder of spouses, have emphasised their demand for a separate law to deal with crimes involving inter-caste love marriages or relationships. In several such cases, the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act may not be applicable, they said. At a programme organised by the dalit rights NGO, Evidence, in Madurai on Saturday, activist and survivor Kausalya said that even now, the state and central govts do not have any data on caste ('honour') killings. Her husband Shankar was murdered in a gruesome instance of caste violence in 2016. "When there is no separate law to deal with these cases, some of the accused named remain free. Every time a caste killing happens, I feel depressed and saddened. Recently, I reached out to the girl who was Kavin's lover as I knew the pain she must have been feeling," she added. When a woman is subjected to caste crimes directly or indirectly by physical or verbal means by her own family, she is often forced to toe their line due to fear. "Only when the perpetrator is from another caste and the victim is SC, can the SC/ST Act be invoked. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Write Better, Work Smarter With This Desktop App Grammarly Install Now Undo Convictions are also difficult to get. A separate law is the need of the hour," said A Kathir, executive director, Evidence. Two other survivors, Arulmozhi and Rekha, also shared their experiences of facing caste violence, and stressed how important it was for dalit women to stand together. Rekha said she is working hard and studying to complete engineering. They said mustering the courage to speak out against the violence is more important than worrying about what society thinks. A S Kumari, chairperson, state commission for women, stressed the need for women from marginalised backgrounds to speak out about crimes and issues they face or witness regularly. "In cases of domestic violence as well, we see many women coming forward to complain at police stations. But the husband comes out of jail in a while and his wife is subjected to abuse again, and stripped of freedom. We need stricter laws. Only when women come together, society can change," she said. Siddaramaiah lays foundation for new Congress office in Mysuru

Mysuru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a new Congress office in Mysuru. The CM laid the foundation stone for the new Congress office, officially named Indira Congress Bhavana, at the site of the party's existing office premises. He appealed to party workers to contribute towards the construction of the new office. "Even a contribution of Rs 500 can make a difference," he said, urging everyone to donate according to their capacity. He also asked them to ensure the construction of the building is completed within a year. During the event, party workers attempted to celebrate the CM's birthday by organising a cake-cutting, but he declined, stating, " I have never cut a cake and I won't do it now." He did, however, accept a felicitation from the workers at their request. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar later joined in the felicitation. Shortly after the foundation stone was laid, the CM left for Varuna. Shivakumar, in his address, described the upcoming building as "a temple for Congress workers and a guardian of democracy." He encouraged every party worker to contribute — even if it was just Rs 100 — towards the project. He also urged all Congress MLAs from Mysuru district to donate funds for the initiative. The DCM stressed the importance of establishing dedicated Congress offices in every taluk and said he had urged the CM and district minister HC Mahadevappa to prioritise this. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They Are Unstoppable: The Most Beautiful and Talented Female Athletes Undo Speaking at the function, Narasimharaja MLA Tanveer Sait referred to Shivakumar as his political guru. Congressman Nagabhushan Tiwari, who has safeguarded the property ever since, was felicitated on the occasion. The party could have earned revenue by leasing the land to the railways for a parking project, but it didn't, they noted.
