Melaka RTD Vows Stern Action Against Illegal Micromobility Vehicles On Public Roads
MELAKA, May 4 (Bernama) – The Melaka Road Transport Department (RTD) will not hesitate to take stern action against individuals caught operating micromobility vehicles on public roads.
Deputy Director Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim said the department is aware of a viral 18-second video showing three individuals riding electric scooters on a public road.
'We would like to stress that this behaviour is illegal and poses a danger not only to those involved but also to other road users,' he said in a statement today.
He added that under Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 [Act 333], any individual operating an unauthorised vehicle on a public road may be prosecuted.
'If convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM1,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both,' he said.
He said the use of micromobility vehicles such as e-scooters, hoverboards, monowheels, Segways, and unapproved electric bicycles on public roads is strictly prohibited under the Road Vehicle (Prohibition of Use) (Amendment) Order 2021, which came into effect on Dec 17, 2021.
'Micromobility vehicles are only permitted in designated areas such as recreational parks, dedicated lanes, or private premises, not on public roads,' he said.
He also urged parents to closely monitor their children's movements, particularly concerning the growing use of micromobility vehicles.
'Any violations of this regulation can be reported to the RTD or nearest authorities for further action,' he added.

The crash, which is believed to have occurred between 12.30 am and 1 am, killed 15 students and left 27 other students, the bus driver and his assistant, as well as three passengers of the MPV, injured. Advertisement Preliminary investigations revealed that the bus, driven by a substitute driver from another bus company, collided with the MPV before overturning. The bus is also believed to have been travelling at an excessive speed, based on the victims' accounts. The crash marks the worst in over a decade after the express bus incident in Genting Highlands on Aug 21, 2013, when the bus, carrying 53 passengers, veered off the road and plunged into a 60-metre ravine at Kilometre 3.5 of Jalan Genting. Thirty-seven lives were lost, and 16 others were injured in the crash, deemed the most devastating bus tragedy in the nation's history. Today's accident reopens the wounds of past tragedies that claimed numerous lives. Advertisement On Dec 20, 2010, another tragic incident occurred at Kilometre 15 on the Cameron Highlands-Simpang Pulai Road, involving a tour bus carrying Thai tourists. The bus allegedly lost control, collided with the road divider, then veered into the opposite lane and overturned into a ditch. Twenty-seven people perished, the majority of whom were foreign tourists, while several others sustained serious injuries. Three years prior, on Aug 13, 2007, a total of 20 passengers were killed and nine others critically injured after the express bus they were travelling in lost control and overturned at Kilometre 229 on the North-South Expressway (Plus) near Bukit Gantang, Perak. Here is a chronology of some of the deadliest bus crashes in Malaysia since 2003. Traffic jam saves UPSI student from boarding ill-fated bus
Her daughter tried calling her friends who were on the bus around 1 am but received no response, before one friend contacted her around 2am to inform her that the bus had been involved in an accident. 09 Jun 2025 04:16pm The tragic accident near Tasik Banding, Gerik involving the bus and a Perodua Alza MPV claimed 15 lives and left 33 injured, 27 of them in serious condition. Photo by Bernama KOTA BHARU - A traffic jam caused a Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) student to miss boarding the bus that was involved in a fatal accident on the Jeli-Gerik East West Highway early this morning. Rosyidah Husien, 50, said her daughter Nur Adilah Mohd Rusdi, 20, the fifth of seven siblings, was supposed to board the chartered bus transporting UPSI students from Masjid Hadhari, Jerteh at 9 pm yesterday. She told Bernama that the car driven by her husband, Mohd Rusdi Ramli, 55, to send their daughter to the pick-up point arrived after the bus had already departed. "When contacted, the driver said the bus would stop in Machang, but my husband refused to send her there as it was quite far. In the end, my daughter hitched a ride with her uncle, Mohd Nizam Husien, who coincidentally was also travelling to Kuala Lumpur last night,' she said. Rosyidah said her daughter left their home in Kampung Gong Bayor, Besut around midnight with her uncle. She said her daughter tried calling her friends who were on the bus around 1 am but received no response, before one friend contacted her around 2am to inform her that the bus had been involved in an accident. "What shocked us even more was when the police contacted my daughter and informed her that her name was listed as one of the bus passengers. "In fact, the seat that my daughter was supposed to occupy was seat number nine, but last night it was taken by her friend,' she said. Rosyidah is grateful her daughter is now safe in Temerloh, although still traumatised and unwilling to be interviewed. Before departing last night, Rosyidah said Nur Adilah managed to chat with her grandmother and bid her farewell, expressing worry that an accident might happen. "I did scold her for saying such a thing, but she only smiled. Who would have thought her words would come true? I am so thankful that fate spared her last night,' she said choked with emotion. Rosyidah added that apart from Nur Adilah, another of her daughter's friends was also spared after not boarding the bus, having been admitted to Besut Hospital due to fever.
