Melaka RTD Vows Stern Action Against Illegal Micromobility Vehicles On Public Roads
MELAKA, May 4 (Bernama) – The Melaka Road Transport Department (RTD) will not hesitate to take stern action against individuals caught operating micromobility vehicles on public roads.
Deputy Director Khairul Aswad Abdul Halim said the department is aware of a viral 18-second video showing three individuals riding electric scooters on a public road.
'We would like to stress that this behaviour is illegal and poses a danger not only to those involved but also to other road users,' he said in a statement today.
He added that under Section 54(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 [Act 333], any individual operating an unauthorised vehicle on a public road may be prosecuted.
'If convicted, offenders may face a fine of up to RM1,000, imprisonment for up to three months, or both,' he said.
He said the use of micromobility vehicles such as e-scooters, hoverboards, monowheels, Segways, and unapproved electric bicycles on public roads is strictly prohibited under the Road Vehicle (Prohibition of Use) (Amendment) Order 2021, which came into effect on Dec 17, 2021.
'Micromobility vehicles are only permitted in designated areas such as recreational parks, dedicated lanes, or private premises, not on public roads,' he said.
He also urged parents to closely monitor their children's movements, particularly concerning the growing use of micromobility vehicles.
'Any violations of this regulation can be reported to the RTD or nearest authorities for further action,' he added.

JERTIH: The Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIDAM) has channelled RM49,500 in aid to the families and students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) who were affected by the tragic road accident on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, on Monday. MAIDAM chief executive officer Assoc Prof Datuk Dr Ahmad Azrin Adnan said the families of the 15 students who perished will each receive RM1,500, while the 27 injured students will each receive RM1,000. 'This assistance is hoped to ease their burden, as the majority of the students involved come from families who are recipients of MAIDAM's aid for the poor and needy. 'In addition, our visit today is also to gather information on any further assistance the families may require,' he told reporters after presenting the contribution to Maslan Abdul Rahman, 58, the father of Nor Ayuni, 21, who died in the accident, at their home in Felda Tenang, here. Ahmad Azrin said 13 of the students who perished were from families receiving aid under MAIDAM's hardcore poor and poor (asnaf fakir and miskin) categories. 'Of the 27 injured students, 13 are also from zakat-recipient families under the same categories. Meanwhile, 16 of the students involved in the crash were recipients of MAIDAM's Higher Education Early Assistance,' he said. On Monday, 15 UPSI students were killed when a chartered bus carrying them from Jertih to the main UPSI campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned in an accident involving a Perodua Alza on the JRTB. Town planning officer pleads not guilty to false claim charge
Nazri KOTA KINABALU (June 11): A town planning officer pleaded not guilty at the Special Corruption Court on Wednesday to submitting a false claim amounting to RM19,100. Nazri Hamburg, 45, from the Sabah Town and Country Planning Department, was charged under Section 18 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, punishable under Section 24(2) of the same act. If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of at least five times the fraudulent amount or RM10,000, whichever is higher. The charge alleges that Nazri submitted a false claim form dated June 12, 2017, to a finance administrative assistant in his department. The document included Bill No. 171021 for the delivery of a car and a pick-up truck, along with labour charges for moving goods — totalling RM19,100. Investigators found that no such services were rendered. Judge Jason Juga set July 10 for pre-trial case management and granted Nazri RM10,000 bail with a RM5,000 deposit under one local surety. The court also ordered him to report monthly to the MACC office and surrender his passport, if any. Counsel Hannan Razaini represented the accused.

Gerik bus crash: Nor Ayuni's family forgive bus driver
JERTIH: The family of Nor Ayuni Maslan, one of the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who lost her life in the road crash on the East-West Highway (JRTB) near Tasik Banding in Gerik, Perak, last Monday, has expressed their willingness to forgive the bus driver involved in the tragedy. Her brother, Ahmad Azizul Maslan, 26, said that although the incident deeply affected their family, they bear no resentment towards the driver. "This forgiveness is for the peace of my youngest sister, the youngest of eight siblings. As a family, we have decided not to prolong this matter and are open to accepting the bus driver's apology. "We will leave the rest to the authorities for further investigation and abide by the legal process. As far as our family is concerned, it ends here," he said when met by reporters at their home in Felda Tenang on Wednesday (June 11). The family received a visit from the Terengganu Islamic Religious and Malay Custom Council (Maidam), led by its Chief Executive Officer, Assoc. Prof. Datuk Dr Ahmad Azrin Adnan, who also presented RM1,500 in assistance to each of the next of kin of the deceased at their respective homes. The bus driver involved in the tragic accident has issued an apology to the victims' families, claiming that a sudden brake failure caused the incident. However, Perak Police Chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin has since advised the 39-year-old driver against making any public statements to any party, as it could interfere with the ongoing police investigation. The fatal crash occurred in the early hours on Monday (June 9) when a chartered bus carrying UPSI students from Jertih to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after crashing into a car. The accident resulted in the deaths of 15 students and left 33 others injured, including the bus driver, the bus attendant, and the driver and three passengers of the car. – Bernama
