GCC teams gear up for Asian Le Mans at Dubai Autodrome

UAE-based team Dragon Racing, along with Herberth Motorsport's 911 team, featuring an all-Qatari crew of Ibrahim Al-Abdulghani, Abdulla Al-Khelaifi and Ghanim Al-Ali, will be among the 47 cars on the grid for the two four-hour races on Feb. 8-9.
Dragon Racing will enter a pair of Ferrari 296 GT3s for those races, with Todd Coleman, Benjamin Pedersen and Aaron Tellitz behind the wheel. Team-mates Marco Pulcini, Nicola Marinangeli and Giacomo Altoe will be in the other car.
Besides the GT category, which includes championship leaders Winward Racing, the event also features LMP2 and LMP3 categories with 10 and seven cars, respectively, set to compete on both days.
Entry to the event is free. Away from the track there will be entertainment and food and beverage options for fans to enjoy.
Faisal Al Sahlawi, general manager of Dubai Autodrome, said: 'The Dubai Autodrome had its first taste of the Asian Le Mans Series in 2021 and since then, the event has grown rapidly to be one of our major racing championships. The fact there are 47 teams participating this weekend signifies how highly regarded the event is.
'The races will also see the Gulf region being represented through UAE and Qatar — which showcases the popularity of the sport in the region again and giving them a platform to test themselves against international teams.
'Previous editions proved to be a big success and this weekend's races will be no different as some of the world's best GT drivers test themselves on a challenging 5.39km circuit that not only sees them take on the high-speed straights but also the corners — all of which paves the way to a great weekend of elite motorsport racing action.'

One of the most difficult aspects is starting the preseason without eight players who are currently away competing with their national teams for EuroBasket or the AmeriCup. Golemac acknowledged the challenge but also pointed to the quality it reflects. 'As staff, of course we'd prefer to have the full group from day one. But having so many internationals shows the level of our roster. We'll welcome the first arrivals, make them feel at home, and integrate each national team player as soon as they return.' The coach also addressed the demanding schedule ahead — from 40 games last season to potentially 80 this year if Dubai reaches the playoffs and finals. 'The biggest challenge is how to manage traveling, practices, and recoveries. With 20 EuroLeague teams, finding time to practice and analyze will be key.' Finally, Golemac turned to the supporters: 'Our mission is to fight like there's no tomorrow. Fans can expect us to be physical, to compete for the city, the club, and for them. Like last year, we want them to be our sixth player. With their energy, I know it will be even tougher for any team to beat us at home.'

Gill and Bumrah in India's Asia Cup squad, Jaiswal ignored
NEW DELHI: Defending champions India named top order batter Shubman Gill and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah in their Twenty20 squad on Tuesday for next month's Asia Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and middle order batter Shreyas Iyer, however, could not make the cut in the 15-member squad led by Suryakumar Yadav. India's test captain Gill has not played a T20 International since July last year when he was Suryakumar's deputy on the tour of Sri Lanka. 'That's where we started a new cycle,' Suryakumar, who took over T20 captaincy from Rohit Sharma after India won the 20-overs World Cup title last year, told reporters. 'After that he got busy with all the test series and he didn't get an opportunity to play T20s because he was busy playing test cricket and Champions Trophy. 'So he's there in the squad and we're happy to have him.' India also included Bumrah, whose workload has been a major concern for the team think-tank, which played him in three of the five tests in England earlier this year. With three opening options in Gill, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson — India could not accommodate Jaiswal. 'With regard to Yashasvi, it's just unfortunate again,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar said. 'There's Abhishek Sharma, what he's done over the last year or so, plus he can bowl a little bit, he gives us that option if required. 'One of these guys was going to miss out, Yashasvi just has to wait for his chance.' Samson and Jitesh Sharma are the two wicketkeepers in the side, which also includes left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.
