Kylian Mbappe returns to Real Madrid training but ruled out of RB Salzburg clash
Real Madrid superstar Kylian Mbappe will have to wait for his Club World Cup debut, which provided Los Blancos get through, will come in the knockout stages. The Frenchman's condition has improved in recent days, but he has not been deemed fit enough to return to action.
The 26-year-old was taken ill last week with a virus, which hospitalised him briefly. Ruling him out of their games against Pachuca and Al-Hilal, this week Mbappe did return to exercising. However their final group game has come too soon for him, in the early hours of Friday morning.
Mbappe left out of Real Madrid squad
Mbappe was back working with the rest of the team on Wednesday, but as reported by Cadena SER, has been left out of their matchday squad to face the Austrian side. He posted on social media saying 'finally back' with an image of himself training, but after losing significant weight to the virus, Real Madrid will not risk him. He has now been laid low for the past 10 days.

Real Madrid look to top group against RB Salzburg
Los Blancos head into their final group game knowing that a victory over Salzburg or a score draw will be enough for them to top their group. All the same, their opponents in the Round of 16 will not be easy, with Los Blancos likely to face one of Juventus or Manchester City.
Raul Asencio absent
After picking up a red card against Pachuca, defender Raul Asencio will also be missing. Antonio Rudiger is primed to take his place alongside Dean Huijsen after returning from injury against the Mexican side, while Gonzalo Garcia Torres has done plenty to earn the nod in Mbappe's absence for a third time. Eder Militao, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy, Dani Carvajal, Endrick Felipe and Eduardo Camavinga are all out with injuries still too.

According to a report from La Provence, Olympique de Marseille are interested in PSV winger Johan Bakayoko (22), who remains a target for clubs in the Premier League and the Bundesliga. Borussia Dortmund set to reward head coach Niko Kovac with contract extension
Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac is set to be handed a new contract after the Club World Cup. Kovac signed a short-term deal which runs until the end of next season when he succeeded Nuri Sahin in February, but the 53-year-old is set to be rewarded with an extension following a strong finish to the campaign. Advertisement Formal negotiations over the Croatian's new deal are set to begin after Dortmund's Club World Cup campaign. They will face Mexican side Monterrey in the round of 16 on Tuesday after topping Group F with wins over South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns and South Korean club Ulsan HD and a goalless draw with Brazilian side Fluminense. Kovac led Dortmund from mid-table to a fourth-placed league finish and a return to the Champions League for the coming season after winning seven of their final eight matches of the campaign. He previously coached fellow Bundesliga clubs Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, as well as Monaco in Ligue 1 and the Croatia national team. Well deserved. When Kovac arrived in February, Borussia Dortmund were in 11th place in the Bundesliga and drifting towards a dismal season. Four months later, having inspired a run of form that saw Dortmund win seven of their last 8 games and remain undefeated from the middle of March, Kovac has the club back in the Champions League and heading in the right direction. Stylistically, Dortmund are a simpler, but tougher side than they were under Nuri Sahin. Kovac has implemented a 3-4-2-1 that seems to offer more stability and suit the players at his disposal, but the performance indicators — most noticeably the team's running and sprinting data — have also greatly improved, seemingly in response to a tougher form of coaching and more uncompromising type of man management. This is an important step. Kovac's original contract ran until 2026, meaning that his position would have been subject to speculation had he entered next season without an extension. With it, however, comes a proper endorsement and a sense of permanence that he and they will benefit from.
