Andrew Kittredge throws Cubs' sixth immaculate inning, 1 day after getting booed off the mound

Andrew Kittredge's first two appearances with the Chicago Cubs were perfect. His third appearance was a disaster. His fourth appearance? The sixth immaculate inning in franchise history. The veteran reliever accomplished the feat of three strikeouts on nine pitches on Wednesday in the seventh inning of a game against the Cincinnati Reds. His victims: Austin Hays, Gavin Lux and Tyler Stephenson, all of whom went down swinging. Immaculate innings are one of the less-known single-game accomplishments in baseball, but the fact that there have only been 120 in MLB history puts them closer to perfect games (24) than no-hitters (326) on the rarity scale. They are becoming more frequent, though, with 13 in the past four seasons. Cal Quantrill of the Miami Marlins and Brandon Young of the Baltimore Orioles are responsible for the other two immaculate innings this season. Kittredge, whom the Cubs acquired at the trade deadline for infield prospect Wilfri De La Cruz, entered the history books just one day after getting booed off the field at Wrigley Field. He allowed four earned runs in an inning of work, taking the loss in a 5-1 Reds victory. Immaculate innings have a tendency to sneak up on people who are watching the game, or even the ones playing in it. The Cubs booth praised Kittredge for bouncing back by striking out the side, until a graphic showed the words "immaculate inning" and Cubs catcher Carson Kelly admitted he didn't realize what was happening until pitch No. 9: 'The last pitch [is when I realized]. I was like, 'Wow. We went sinker, sinker, slider; sinker, sinker, slider; sinker, sinker... slider?' It was pretty cool to be a part of that.' Kittredge is a nine-year MLB veteran and was solid in his half-season with Orioles — solid enough in fact to get traded as the team decided to punt on a lost 2025 season. He was one of four players acquired by the Cubs at the deadline, alongside fellow reliever Taylor Rogers, utility man Willi Castro and starting pitcher Michael Soroka, whose status is very up in the air right now.

Luis Suárez leads Inter Miami to 3-1 win over Pumas in Leagues Cup

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Luis Suárez scored and had two assists, and Inter Miami beat Pumas 3-1 on Wednesday night to advance in the Leagues Cup. Miami played the match without Lionel Messi, who is sidelined indefinitely with what the team described as a minor muscle injury in his right leg. Messi was hurt in the opening minutes of Inter Miami's win over Necaxa on Saturday. He was in attendance for Wednesday's match and watched from a suite at Chase Stadium. Miami, which has eight points in the Major League Soccer Leagues Cup standings, is the first MLS club through to the tournament's knockout stages. Rodrigo De Paul scored his first Inter Miami goal on an assist from Suárez in the 45th, tying the match after Pumas' Jorge Ruvalcaba opened scoring in the 34th. De Paul, the star Argentine midfielder who came to MLS to play with his national team friend Messi, made his club debut in Inter Miami's League's Cup opener against Atlas last Wednesday and had two assists against Necaxa. Suárez put Inter Miami ahead 2-1 when he converted a penalty kick in the 59th after a handball was called on Pumas defender José Caicedo in the penalty area. It was Suárez first goal since he scored in Inter Miami's Club World Cup match against Palmeiras on June 23. Tadeo Allende finished Suárez's second assist of the night in the 69th. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

Suarez steps up in Messi's absence to send Inter Miami to Leagues Cup quarters

Inter Miami needed someone to step up in Lionel Messi's absence in order to avoid an early elimination from the Leagues Cup. Fellow superstar attacker Luis Suarez answered the call. Suarez scored a penalty kick and delivered two delightful assists to send Inter Miami through to the quarterfinals via a 3-1 home win over Mexican club Pumas UNAM on Wednesday night. The South Florida side came from behind to grab the group stage victory, as Suarez dished out helpers to Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende that were sandwiched around a goal of his own. Javier Mascherano's men finished 2-1-0 with eight points in the group stage of the Leagues Cup, and as a result will open the knockout phase by hosting a yet-to-be-determined Mexican opponent on either Aug. 19 or 20. Missing Messi due to the muscle injury sustained in last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Necaxa, Mascherano trotted his team out in a 4-3-3 formation that saw De Paul playing closer to Suarez. Pumas was the better team from the run of play in the first half, and took a lead in the 34th minute when U.S.-born attacker Jorge Ruvalcaba made a fantastic run in behind the defense to tuck away a lobbed pass from Pedro Vite. Inter Miami struggled to generate clear-cut chances in the first half, but found life as Suarez sparked the comeback in the 45th minute with an assist on Rodrigo De Paul's first goal for the Herons. Suarez got on the end of a precise long ball from Yannick Bright before curling a gorgeous cross from the left to De Paul, who tucked away a low effort to the right. Inter Miami thought it had claimed the lead two minutes after halftime when a quick free kick was played past a napping Pumas back line, but Suarez's cross-body sizzler was eventually whistled back for offside. No one would deny the Uruguayan striker on this day, though. After a handball was whistled against Pumas midfielder Jose Caicedo, Suarez stepped up to the spot and gave Inter Miami a 59th-minute lead via a gutsy and classy panenka down the middle. He celebrated his 10th tally of the year across all competitions in the same manner that he had on the negated finish from earlier. Suarez raced over to the sideline to put on a cowboy hat that read 'Delfi' — an apparent nod to his daughter Delfina, whose birthday was earlier this week — before blowing a kiss. Allende wasted a glorious chance to make it a two-goal advantage for Inter Miami in the 67th minute, attempting to chip a shot over that was saved well by goalkeeper Miguel Angel Paul Hernandez. Pumas starting netminder Keylor Navas was suspended for the game due the red card he received late in the last match vs. Atlanta United. Allende atoned for his miss two minutes later by racing onto an exquisite through ball from Suarez before rolling his open look into the back of the net. Inter Miami missed two other glorious chances to find the back of the net, with Allende and substitute Benjamin Cremaschi failing to capitalize on quality looks from in close. It hardly mattered, as the South Florida side prevailed four days before returning to regular-season action. Inter Miami will next return to MLS play and travel to face arch-rivals Orlando City on Sunday night at 8.
