Texas A&M surprises Lions head coach Dan Campbell with Lifetime Achievement Award
Texas A&M and the Detroit Lions teamed up to surprise beloved Lions head coach Dan Campbell with an award to recognize his career achievements.
The Texas A&M Football account shared a video Wednesday afternoon of the "interview" setup with Campbell's old strength coach Mike Clark. Campbell was told that he was just there to talk about his time playing for the Aggies.
As Campbell sat down across from Clark, a video appeared on the TV screen between them with a message from former Aggies head coach R.C. Slocum.
"I know this comes as a surprise -- this is not an interview," Slocum said.
"From everybody here in Aggieland, I wanted to congratulate you on what an awesome career that you have had and continue to have."
The video continued to play messages from Campbell's former A&M teammates congratulating him for earning the Lettermen's Association 2025 Lifetime Achievement Award. Campbell watched on with emotion as the video wrapped up and his family walked out to embrace him.
"Are you kidding me? You guys knew?" Campbell said to his family as they walked out.
"I'm honored... I love my Aggies man... thank you to all my teammates, R.C., love you to death."
Campbell played tight end for four seasons at Texas A&M from 1995-1998. The New York Giants selected Campbell in the 3rd round of the 1999 NFL Draft.

3 overreactions from Dolphins' preseason win vs. Lions

The Miami Dolphins completed their second 2025 preseason contest, topping the Detroit Lions, 24-17, at Ford Field. With it being a preseason contest, the Dolphins rested a number of key starters. That group included quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, all four of the Dolphins' top receivers, left tackle Patrick Paul, and center Aaron Brewer. But, that opened the door for Dolphins fans to get a longer look at some different faces. Coming out of Miami's second preseason contest, here are three rapid overreactions: Willie Gay Jr. is going to be a difference-maker for the Dolphins The Dolphins signed Willie Gay Jr. to a one-year, $1.33 million contract this past March. That's looking like more and more of a bargain signing for Miami. For the second preseason game in a row, Gay was running around making plays early and often. On the game's first possession, the 27-year-old diagnosed a 3rd-and-15 screen pass and quickly dumped Lions running back Sione Vaki for a six-yard loss. Gay finished his day with three tackles and a tackle for loss. The 6'1, 246-pound linebacker brings 55 career starts to Miami and he is absolutely going to help the Dolphins at linebacker. Dee Eskridge is making the 53-man roster Dee Eskridge will be on the 53-man roster with the Dolphins in 2025. A practice squad player in 2024, Eskridge was signed to Miami's active roster in October of last year where he played in six games. The 5'9, 190-pound receiver returned five kicks for 146 yards and caught three passes for 44 yards in 2024. Eskridge is among the group at wide receiver jockeying to make the Dolphins' 53-man roster. Though it got off to a rocky start on Saturday with Eskridge fumbling on his opening punt return, his next punt return went for 28 yards before a penalty wiped a lot of that yardage out. But, it was what Eskridge did in the receiving game that helped make his case on Saturday. Eskridge caught three passes for 53 yards, including his 11-yard touchdown grab where he danced his way into the end zone down the sideline. Theo Wease will stick around as one of the Dolphins' practice squad members The Dolphins' top four receivers are established with Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, Malik Washington and Nick Westbrook-Ikhine. Dolphins Wire's most recent projection also included Tahj Washington and Dee Eskridge making Miami's 53-man roster coming out of the preseason contest against the Bears. Theo Wease Jr., an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, is among the group battling to make the Dolphins' 53-man roster. On Saturday, Miami fans got a nice glimpse of what Wease can do. The 6'2, 210-pound receiver reeled in six catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns. Wease misses out on the 53-man roster, but he sticks around as one of Miami's practice squad players. Kyle Allen stands out, earns big praise from Dan Campbell after preseason loss to Dolphins

After another very strong performance in the Detroit Lions' preseason loss to the visiting Miami Dolphins, Kyle Allen has all but wrapped up the No. 2 quarterback gig behind Pro Bowl starter Jared Goff. Anyone who watched the game or was fortunate enough to be in Ford Field for Saturday afternoon's exhibition matchup could see how much better Allen controls the game and moves the ball than Hendon Hooker. That includes Lions head coach Dan Campbell. In his postgame remarks to reporters, Campbell acknowledged that Allen is winning the battle over Hooker. 'Yeah, I mean, he's playing better, he's playing better,' Campbell said.' So I would say that right now, if you're saying—if you had to go in with the (backup QB) two right now, 'Who would you trust more?' Yeah, I would trust Kyle more because he's proven more after these two games." Allen's accuracy, decision-making and composure behind an offensive line comprised of depth players that aren't reliable in pass protection stand out to Campbell. "This is his second week in a row you, you know, in a competitive setting here that he's moved the football for us and made critical throws at critical times," Campbell continued. "I thought the two-minute drill at the end was awesome, right before half. I mean, that was -- he's got really good command of the offense, he communicates very clearly, he doesn't get frazzled, he doesn't worry about anything. If he does something that didn't (go) quite right or he makes a mistake, like, he doesn't get frazzled. He's onto the next play, which all of us appreciate that. So, he's done a good job, I do have faith in him." Allen finished the game against the Dolphins by completing 14-of-17 for 124 yards and two touchdowns, shaking off some early Lions penalty issues that dogged the start. Hooker, by comparison, went 6-for-13 for 61 yards and threw a game-ending interception in the Miami red zone. It was the second week in a row Allen was the more effective, more efficient signal caller.

'He's so fast': Texas A&M sophomore WR could be headed towards breakout season

In less than two weeks, Texas A&M will open the 2025 college football season against UTSA on Saturday, August 30, and based on what we've witnessed, sophomore wide receiver Ashton Bethel-Roman has continued to stand out this month, as he is contending for a starting spot heading into the final week of preseason practice before the Aggies decend on the first game-week of the year. For those who need added context, Roman was one of the program's late additions in the 2024 recruiting class after flipping his commitment from Arkansas, which he described during Friday's post-practice press conference. However, what we did not know about his background was his father, Mark Roman, who starred at safety for the LSU Tigers before spending nearly ten seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers, and San Francisco 49ers. Surprisingly, Roman did not receive an offer from LSU, which he vocally expressed on Friday. 'I'm talking mess about LSU (to my parents) every day. I'm throwing the L down in every picture me and my momma take.' This is both humorous and reality-based because it is the usual path players take when their team, the one they grew up rooting for, ignores them during the recruiting process. Roman could have the last laugh, as the Aggies face LSU in Baton Rouge this season, where they have not won in Death Valley since 1994. Again, this isn't media "hype" on our end. While it's in your right to say it is, safety Bryce Anderson spoke for the entire defense that has covered Roman in practice, praising his elite speed and fluid route running that has given starting quarterback Marcel Reed another deep threat in the passing game. 'His tempo at which he runs his routes. He runs his routes at the same tempo. He's so fast. He's explosive. He can accelerate off the line. He gets from 0 to 100 real quick.' Joining KC Concepcion (NC State) and Mario Craver (Mississippi State) from the transfer portal, Texas A&M's revamped wide receiver room is built on speed, quickness, and separation, which, as Anderson stated, Roman perfectly fits the mold. Lastly, as Carter Karels points out, Roman has already shown off these desired traits during the 2025 Maroon & White Spring Game, so the next step is producing during the games that matter.
