CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WNCT) — On Wednesday, Apr. 23, 2025, two men were charged for the overdose death of an individual in Newport.
Francis Edward Vandevord, 51, and Jamie Allan Rumsey, 50, both of Newport, were charged for the overdose death of Benny Ray Weeks, 62, of Newport. This death investigation started on November 7, 2024, when detectives were called to the home of Weeks after he was found deceased.
Investigation revealed that Vandevoord and Rumsey had acted together to sell Fentanyl to Weeks prior to his death. This led to Vadevoord and Rumsey being charged with the sale and delivery of Fentanyl in December of 2024.
On Tuesday, Apr. 22, 2025, the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner released Weeks' official cause of death as Fentanyl and Methamphetamine Toxicity. This led to Rumsey and Vandevoord also being charged with Death by Distribution-Sale on Apr. 23, 2025.
Rumsey is being held in the Onslow County Jail on unrelated charges and will be transferred to Carteret County for a first appearance. Vandevoord had a first appearance in Carteret County's District Court on the morning of Friday, Apr. 25, 2025, for the Death of Distribution charge and is being held at the Carteret County Detention Center under a $250,000 secured bond.

According to Jennings Police, Tristan Trumaine West, 44, encountered the victim near the 1700 block of North Cary Street on Thursday. After befriending her, West asked to use the restroom at her residence as she and other occupants were returning inside. Once inside, West allegedly confronted the victim in the living room and admitted to officers that he sexually assaulted her. The victim told police that she had pleaded with West to stop, but the attack continued until other occupants in the home intervened. During the investigation, it was learned West is a local transient with a violent criminal history. He was recently released from parole for resisting an officer and possession of Fentanyl. The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police Chief Danny Semmes commended the victim for her bravery for speaking with police about the assault and the other occupants for intervening until police arrived. West remains in the Jeff Davis Parish Jail on a $75,000 bond.

Charlotte City Councilwoman says she's running for reelection after mistakenly sent email claimed she wouldn't

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Despite an email sent to supporters claiming she isn't running for re-election, Charlotte City Councilwoman Tiawana Brown says that email was sent by accident. The email sent Tuesday afternoon said Brown would not run again, but Brown confirmed with Queen City News's Chief Political Correspondent Andy Weber that the email was sent out by mistake and she is planning to seek another term. This fall, Brown will have a challenger for her council seat. Democrat Montravias King told Queen City News he will attempt to unseat Brown in the primary set for Sept. 9. The incumbent, who was elected in 2023, is facing federal fraud charges, and says she will not resign from her post. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Police: Man left paralyzed after being shot in Harrisburg over power washer

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A shooting in Harrisburg over the sale of a power washer left a man paralyzed from the neck down, and another man faces charges, according to police. Jerry Tasker Jr., 34, of Harrisburg, is accused of firing shots after the sale went awry, injuring the 19-year-old man who was sitting inside a vehicle along Honey Alley on May 25, Harrisburg Police said in charging documents. The victim was shot in the upper left back and the bullet was lodged in his neck, police said. Due to his injuries, he had to be transported to another hospital for treatment. But instead of cash, Tasker wanted to swap two grams of crack for it. An argument between the seller and Tasker broke out, and Tasker tried to take the power washer out of the seller's vehicle, a Toyota 4Runner, police said in the charges. Tasker then walked back towards a home after he couldn't get it. Police said Tasker returned to the vehicle and pointed a black gun that had an extended magazine. The driver then took off, but Tasker fired shots that caused the rear driver's side window to 'explode.' Buffalo Wild Wings to open in Dauphin County The complaint states that the driver saw the victim slumped over next to him, so he took him to the hospital. Police said they saw the 4Runner on the hospital's surveillance video and were able to find the driver and speak with him. Tasker was also identified as the shooter when police showed a picture of him to the victim and the driver, the charges show. Tasker faces charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm prohibited and recklessly endangering another person. He is in Dauphin County Prison with his bail denied by Magisterial District Judge Mikaela Sloan. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for June 23. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
