Skipper Guthrie extends stay at Northampton
Northampton Town captain Jon Guthrie has signed a new deal keeping him at the League One club until at least the end of the 2025-26 season.Guthrie, 32, has put pen to paper on a one-year deal with the option of a further year.The central defender joined the Cobblers in 2021 from Scottish club Livingstone and was given the captain's armband the following year by then manager Jon Brady.Guthrie is currently recovering from anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during Northampton's 0-0 draw against Stevenage on New Year's Day."We wouldn't have awarded the contract if we didn't feel he could come back and have an impact next season and we are all working very hard to get Jon back, fit and ready to go as soon as possible," Cobblers boss Kevin Nolan said."Jon is a leader in the group, he helps to set the tone and drives the standards you need."He is an excellent professional, a top character and you can't have too many of those in your dressing room."Guthrie has made 156 appearances in all competitions for Northampton, scoring 15 goals.

And Azim was hoping to use the bout to show off his credentials in the division. The 22-year-old declared he would fight anyone on a week's notice - even two-weight world champ Devin Haney. "Haney, I think he's got enough power just to keep someone off, but I don't think he has that one-punch power. "But I think if I was going to fight him I think I'd beat him with speed." England resume their World Cup qualification campaign on Saturday with a trip to Andorra, but players are fighting for a diminishing number of places in Thomas Tuchel's squad England boss Thomas Tuchel has admitted there are just 10 spots remaining in his squad for next summer's World Cup. The Three Lions still have six games to play in their qualification group. Their next match comes on Saturday evening when they travel to face minnows Andorra in Barcelona. But having won their opening two qualifiers, England appear almost certain to book their place in next summer's tournament. That will be held across the United States of America, Canada and Mexico. The revamped competition will see more games than ever before, though only 16 countries will be dumped out at the group stage. England are likely to be one of the favourites to win the World Cup, having finished as runners-up in each of the last two European Championships. Tuchel has been brought in to lead them to glory in next summer's tournament. The German has sprung a few surprises in his first few squads, bringing the likes of Jordan Henderson and Ivan Toney in from the cold. He only has a handful more camps in which to test out players in his team. And a year out from the World Cup, the England boss has now confirmed that there are only 10 spots remaining in his squad. Each country will be allowed to name 26 players for the tournament. But Tuchel has already settled on 16 names. He told ITV Sport: "I have to take a guess, I would say 16, maybe. But it's just a guess, maybe it's less, maybe it's more. We need a bit of time. We still have time." The Three Lions are heavy favourites to smash Andorra, before hosting Senegal in a friendly at Nottingham Forest's City Ground on Tuesday. Speaking after naming his squad for these games, Tuchel admitted he is relishing the chance to work with his players again. 'We can't wait,' Tuchel said. 'It's been a while. We had a good first camp and we are eager to do the next step and have a good camp again in Spain and back at St. George's Park with two matches. 'We want to win both matches. It's super important. We are the heavy favourites [against Andorra] and we expect from ourselves a win. We will prepare for this game with all the respect and of course, very seriously. 'We love Wembley and Wembley is our home but it's a nice change of routine [to play at the City Ground]. It will be a nice occasion because Senegal are a strong team, high up in the international ranking, so it will be a good test and a necessary test.' Sophie Ecclestone takes break from cricket to prioritise ‘well-being'
Sophie Ecclestone has decided to take a break from all cricket to prioritise her 'well-being' ahead of England's white-ball series against India. The England and Wales Cricket Board has said she remains available for selection for the five T20s and three ODIs against India in June and July, but she has not played for the national side since the 16-0 whitewash Ashes defeat at the start of the year. Ecclestone was left out of Charlotte Edwards' first England squad against the West Indies with a knee injury sustained over the winter, although she returned to domestic cricket the same day as the squad announcement. Ecclestone, who tops the ICC's T20I and 50-over bowling rankings, has been playing in the domestic white-ball competitions until as recently as June 1, and was part of the Lancashire side that won the T20 County Cup in May. In her eight domestic games this season, she has taken 14 wickets across the two formats at an average of 11. England Women's head coach Charlotte Edwards said: 'Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but more importantly she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself. 'We're totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. 'We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that.' Ecclestone made headlines during England's chastening Ashes defeat in Australia when she refused to do an interview with pundit Alex Hartley, a former team-mate. The public spat was over comments made by Hartley during the T20 World Cup in the autumn, questioning the players' fitness levels, although she did not name any individuals specifically.
