Empty shops in County Durham prompt 'ghost town' fears
The number of empty shops in County Durham is at its highest rate ever, a report has found.Peterlee, Bishop Auckland, and Newton Aycliffe are the worst hit, while Ferryhill, Shildon, Consett, and Barnard Castle have also suffered heavily in the past year.Overall, vacancy rates recently increased to 18.3%, compared with the national average of 14.4%.However, one local retail consultant said work was being done to tackle the issue, adding "despite all the challenges, we continue to see good-quality independent and national businesses opening and seeking space in the region's town and city centres".
High streets across County Durham have continued to suffer when high-profile retailers leave prominent sites, with closures fuelled by changing shopping habits and rising rent. The number of pharmacies, banks, and supermarkets have also decreased, but there were about 33% more takeaway outlets in 2024 compared with 2014.
'Work together'
The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the report, Ghost Towns: The Decline of the High Street and Health Inequalities, argued for more "people-friendly" spaces, with seating, public toilets and pedestrianised areas to increase footfall.Graham Soult, a North East-based retail consultant, warned that the declining state of local high streets should not be sensationalised."Local place leaders on the ground, in this region and beyond, are already working hard to tackle those issues and help facilitate the very change that the report's authors advocate", he said.Residents in Bishop Auckland and Spennymoor have been invited to take part in decision-making and new powers such as High Street Rental Auctions, to help redevelop derelict properties, are set to be introduced in Darlington.
Mr Soult, who previously worked on the government's High Streets Task Force, said: "It is particularly disappointing that the report does not provide a platform to celebrate case studies of the good practice it is pushing for."The question we need to be asking is how we can all work together to make even more of that good stuff happen."

The three games included in the bet are England vs Portugal, Germany vs Netherlands, and Belgium vs Spain. Valued at 1/1 - the accumulator requires England, Germany and Spain all to win in 90 minutes. Regarding the above bet - all three teams enter their respective fixtures as huge odds-on favourites according to Sky Bet. Toyota will build GR Corollas in the UK because of its ‘deep motorsport culture'
Toyota will build GR Corollas in the UK because of its 'deep motorsport culture' No confirmation if we'll be getting any GR Corollas ourselves, mind Skip 6 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. 1 / 6 Toyota will build the GR Corolla in the UK from 2026 partly to cope with demand, and partly because of our excellent motorsport culture and expertise as the primary reasons. Basically, Toyota reckons we're pretty good at building fast things. The GR Corolla will be manufactured at Toyota's Burnaston plant, near Derby, where the standard Corolla and Corolla Touring Sports models are currently being produced. Makes sense, considering the two cars share a few exterior panels and interior trim. Advertisement - Page continues below Something that certainly isn't shared is the engine: a punchy little 1.6-litre three-pot that also features in the equally punchy (and brilliant) GR Yaris. Which means 300bhp and 295lb ft, enough to chalk off 0-62mph in five seconds. (These GR engines are built in Toyota's Motomachi plant in Japan.) OK, we know what you're thinking: the GR Corolla's being built here, but we can't buy one. Well, Toyota has confirmed future markets and production volume strategy will be clarified over the coming months. And having acknowledged the UK's love for racy things, there's reason enough for us to be optimistic. Optimism that runs to the even racier GR Corollas Toyota's been working on... Aidan O'Brien's massive Derby favourite a huge drifter in the market as stablemate is smashed in
WINTER'S OVER Punters are siding with only one of the runners Sam Morgan Published: 14:18, Updated: 14:19, AIDAN O'BRIEN'S massive Derby favourite The Lion In Winter is a huge drifter in the market. And stablemate Delacroix has been smashed into favourite. 1 Acomb Stakes winner The Lion In Winter - who flopped in the Dante at York - is out to a huge 11 (10-1) on the Betfair Exchange. While Coral reported a surge of bets for Coolmore-owned Delacroix, who looks like being the mount of Ryan Moore. Coral's David Stevens said: "Since Aidan O'Brien's comments earlier this week that Ryan Moore would find it difficult not to ride Delacroix at Epsom, the Leopardstown Trial winner has been the best-backed Derby contender by far. "He has regained outright favouritism for the Classic, in contrast to The Lion In Winter, who has now been eased to 6-1 for next Saturday's race." More to follow. . Remember to gamble responsibly
